Here's the short version, because it's the single most overlooked thing I see on the bench: if your guitar feels stiff down at the first few frets, or your open chords sound faintly out of tune no matter how carefully you set the intonation, the nut is the first place I'd look — not the tuners, not the bridge, and usually not your fingers. A nut cut a hair too high quietly makes a guitar harder to play and slightly sharp in first position, and most players spend months blaming everything else before they check it.

The good news is you can check it yourself in about thirty seconds with no tools. I'll also be honest about what fixing it involves, because this is one of those jobs that's easy to start and easy to ruin.

The symptoms that point straight at the nut

A nut that sits too tall gives you a very specific set of complaints, and once you know the pattern it's hard to un-see:

Open chords — your G, your C, your open E — sound slightly sharp, even though the guitar tunes up perfectly to an open string and the 12th-fret intonation is dead on. Barre chords up the neck are fine. It's only down low that things feel off. On top of that, fretting notes in the first three frets takes more finger pressure than it should, which shows up as hand fatigue on long open-chord songs and, for a lot of players, tuning that "won't settle" on the first few frets.

That combination — in tune open, sharp when fretted low, stiff in first position — is the fingerprint of a high nut. It is not something you can dial out at the bridge. Bridge intonation sets string length for the fretted notes up the neck; it does nothing about how far you have to shove a string down to reach the first fret. That's a nut problem, and it needs a nut fix.

The third-fret test: how to check it in 30 seconds

This is the field test every tech uses, and you don't need anything but your fingers and your eyes. Take one string and press it down at the third fret. While you're holding it there, look closely at the gap between the bottom of that string and the top of the first fret.

Here's how to read what you see. If there's clear daylight over the first fret — a gap you could obviously slide something into — the slot is cut too high. If you see a tiny hairline gap, or the string just barely kisses the fret with a faint tap when you push on it, the nut is right about where it should be. And if the string is already resting flat on the first fret with no gap at all, the slot has been cut too low, which brings its own problem (more on that below).

Do this on all six strings. It's normal for one or two slots to be off while the rest are fine — they're cut individually, and plain and wound strings settle at different rates. Check the low E and high E especially; those are the two I find out of spec most often.

Why a high nut literally makes you play sharp

When a string sits high off the first fret, you have to push it down a long way to make contact — and pushing a string down stretches it, which raises its pitch. The taller the nut, the more you stretch, and the sharper the fretted note goes. It's most obvious in first position because that's where the string has the farthest to travel before it touches a fret.

That's why a high nut can make an otherwise well-set-up guitar sound subtly wrong on open chords while everything above the fifth fret rings true. And it's why chasing the problem at the bridge saddles is a dead end — you'll just end up making the rest of the neck play flat to compensate for a section of neck that isn't actually broken.

How high is "right"? The shop version

The third-fret test tells you if something's clearly wrong, and for most players that's all you need. If you want numbers, the bench way is with feeler gauges: slide a blade between the string and the top of the first fret with the guitar tuned to pitch and the action already set. In my experience a good target lands around .018" to .020" on the wound strings and a touch lower, roughly .016" to .018", on the plain strings — slinky-feel players go lower still. Fair warning: exact specs are a mild point of debate among techs and vary with fret height and playing style, so treat those as a starting range, not gospel. What matters is whether the guitar plays cleanly and in tune.

What if the slot is cut too low?

The opposite problem is just as common, usually because someone (a previous owner, a rushed setup) filed a little too far. A slot cut too low lets the open string rattle against the first fret — that classic open-string buzz that magically disappears the moment you fret anywhere. You can't file your way out of that one; you have to add material back.

The trick most techs reach for is a pinch of baking soda packed into the slot followed by a drop of thin superglue, which sets into a hard filler you can then re-cut to the right depth. It works, and it can save an original nut, but I treat it as a get-out-of-jail fix — it'll get you through a gig, and then the right move is a proper recut or a new nut. If a used guitar you're eyeing has obvious superglue repairs at the nut, it's not a dealbreaker, but it tells you someone's already been in there.

Should you file it yourself?

You can, and plenty of players do. But the honest tradeoff is that taking material off is a one-way trip. Slots need the right gauge files, the correct back-angle toward the headstock, and tiny increments — a couple of thousandths at a time, re-checking after every pass. Go two strokes too far and you've turned a "too high" problem into a "buzzing, needs a new nut" problem. A cut nut is cheap; a botched one plus a replacement is not. If the guitar is valuable, or the nut is bone or a factory piece you'd rather not gamble on, this is worth handing to someone who does it every week. A nut job is one of the cheapest, most transformative things you can pay for.

Check the nut before you buy a used guitar

This is my favorite reason to know the third-fret test: it's a fast tell when you're inspecting a used instrument. A guitar that plays stiff and sharp in first position isn't necessarily bad — it might just need a cheap nut adjustment — but it's a great negotiating point, and it tells you whether the previous owner maintained the thing. FAQ

Can a high nut really make my guitar sound out of tune?

Yes — specifically on open and first-position chords. The extra stretch needed to fret a string over a tall nut pulls those low notes sharp. Notes higher up the neck are much less affected, which is why the guitar can seem in tune when you solo but "off" when you strum cowboy chords.

Will a bridge or intonation adjustment fix a high nut?

No. Bridge intonation corrects string length for fretted notes across the whole neck; it can't undo the sharpening caused by a tall nut in first position. Trying to compensate there just throws the rest of the guitar out. The nut itself has to be lowered.

How much does a nut adjustment cost?

Simply lowering existing slots is one of the cheapest jobs a tech does — often bundled into a full setup. Cutting a brand-new nut costs more because of the material and the time to fit and slot it. Either way it's minor money for how much it changes the way a guitar plays.

Is a hair-thin gap over the first fret normal?

Yes. You don't want the string touching the first fret when you press at the third — that causes open-string buzz. A tiny, barely-visible gap is exactly what you're after.
