This Washburn HJ40SCE Heritage Jumbo is one of those acoustics where the back almost steals the show from the front. The natural spruce top has a clean, understated look, but flip it over and the flame maple is absolutely wild. The figuring runs across the entire back and continues around the sides, and this particular one is unusually clean overall.

It’s a full-size jumbo with a solid Sitka spruce top and flame maple back and sides, so it has that big, open acoustic sound you’d expect without feeling muddy or overly boomy. There’s plenty of volume when you dig into it, but individual notes still come through clearly. It’s a really satisfying guitar to just sit down with and play unplugged.

The neck was probably what surprised me most. It has a satin mahogany neck that feels noticeably quicker than the glossy necks you find on a lot of acoustics. It’s comfortable in the hand, the neck is straight, and the current medium-action setup feels solid without fighting you. The frets are in excellent shape and intonation is spot on.

It also has the factory Fishman Presys+ electronics built into the side, and everything tested exactly as it should. I’m not going to pretend electronics are the exciting part of a guitar that looks like this, but it’s nice having a proper onboard preamp and tuner already there if you plan on actually gigging with it.

Condition-wise, this one is about as nice as I could hope to find. The body, neck, back, fretboard, and frets all inspected excellent, and there really isn’t much visible play wear to speak of. The natural finish still presents beautifully, and the flame maple back in particular looks almost untouched.

What stood out to me

  • Seriously impressive flame maple across the entire back and sides
  • Solid Sitka spruce top with a big, clear jumbo sound
  • Satin neck feels noticeably faster and more comfortable than a typical gloss acoustic neck
  • Excellent overall condition with very little evidence of play
  • Fishman Presys+ electronics work perfectly
  • Comfortable medium action with a straight neck and excellent frets
  • One of those guitars that looks pretty traditional from the front and completely different once you turn it around

Like all my guitars, this one’s been cared for and dialed in—no guesswork, no surprises, just a great instrument that’s ready to play. I personally inspect and test every guitar before it ships, making sure it’s in the exact condition I’d want to receive myself. These guitars come from me, not a shop—each one gets the kind of attention and care only a real guitar lover gives. Ships fast and insured.

Quick note: These guitars don’t usually sit. Most are purchased within 3–7 days, and I regularly hear from watchers after the listing has already sold. If this one’s on your radar, now’s the window!
