This is one of the cooler Goldtop variations Gibson has done, and the Joe Bonamassa treatment gives it a completely different personality from a traditional Les Paul. The metallic Goldtop against the black pickup rings, black pickguard and black back looks fantastic, and the mismatched amber/gold control knobs are one of those small details that makes the whole guitar immediately recognizable.

For a 2011, this one has survived exceptionally well. The Goldtop itself is very clean, the neck is in excellent shape, and the guitar presents beautifully overall. There are some light surface scratches on the black back that become visible under direct lighting, along with a small ding on the bottom side, but nothing I would consider out of line for a guitar approaching 15 years old. I tried to photograph the wear under harsher light so there are no surprises.

The neck has a substantial, comfortable feel that suits this guitar really well. The current setup passed my inspection exactly as it sits, with comfortable medium action and spot-on intonation. The fretboard is clean, the frets are in excellent condition, and there is nothing about the setup that needs attention before it is ready to play.

Plugged in, this is exactly the kind of Les Paul that likes to be leaned into. There is plenty of punch and definition, with the thicker midrange character you want from a good Goldtop-style Les Paul. The neck position stays full without turning muddy, while the bridge has enough bite to cut through once you start adding gain. All of the electronics tested perfectly.

What I especially like about this model is that it does not just feel like a regular Studio with somebody's name attached to it. The Goldtop/black-back combination, black plastics and intentionally mismatched controls give it its own identity, while underneath it is still a straightforward, great-playing Gibson Les Paul.

The biggest thing with this one is just how well it has held up. Black finishes show absolutely everything, so the fact that the wear is still limited to some light scratches and a small bottom-side ding says a lot about how it was treated. From the front it is especially sharp, and the Goldtop still has that rich metallic look that makes these so recognizable.

It is also one of those signature guitars that I think works even if you have zero attachment to the artist. Strip away the Bonamassa name and you are still left with a distinctive Goldtop Les Paul, a comfortable setup, excellent frets and a look Gibson does not use on the everyday Studio.
