Short answer: yes, you can hear it — but it is smaller than people selling magnets want you to believe, and bigger than the folks who say “it's all in your fingers” will admit. Swapping the magnet in a humbucker is real, and it's one of the cheapest tone tweaks on the bench. It just isn't the night-and-day rebuild a lot of forum threads promise. What you're buying is an EQ shift and a change in feel, not a whole new pickup.
I've had this argument at the bench more times than I can count, usually with a customer holding a set of pickups and a little bag of magnets, asking which one will “fix” their guitar. So let me walk through what actually changes when you go from Alnico 2 to Alnico 5, what doesn't, and whether it's worth the twenty minutes of soldering.
First, what the magnet actually is
People picture the magnet as the pole pieces — the six screws and six slugs you see poking through the top of a humbucker. It isn't. In a standard humbucker, there is one flat bar magnet lying on its side underneath both coils, resting on the baseplate. The pole pieces are just steel; the bar magnet magnetizes them. When you “swap the magnet,” that single bar is the part you're pulling out and replacing.
That detail matters, because it explains why the magnet changes tone without changing how “hot” the pickup reads on paper. The coil — the thousands of turns of fine wire — is what it is. The magnet just sets the strength and shape of the field those coils are listening to.
Alnico 2 vs Alnico 5: the honest tonal difference
The number after “Alnico” refers to a different alloy blend of aluminum, nickel and cobalt — not a straight strength ranking, which trips people up. Alnico 3 is actually the weakest of the common grades. Roughly, the strength order runs A3 < A2 < A4 < A5 < A8. A traditional Alnico 2 pickup bar sits around 530–590 gauss; an Alnico 5 bar is meaningfully stronger, closer to 710–770.
Here's what that stronger, tighter field does to the sound, in plain terms:
Alnico 2 tends to sound warmer and softer on top. The highs are rounded off, the low end blooms a little looser, and the midrange gets that vocal, slightly spongy push people love in a bridge pickup for blues and classic rock. It's the “lower and slower” feeling magnet.
Alnico 5 is tighter and brighter. The treble has more edge and clarity, the low end firms up, and the mids scoop a touch, which is why A5 sets tend to cut through a loud band better. If your guitar already sounds dark or woolly, A5 usually wakes it up. If it's already bright and spiky, A5 can make it harsh.
Neither is “better.” I've dropped an A2 into a too-bright bridge humbucker and had the customer grinning because it finally sat right. I've done the reverse on a muddy neck pickup and gotten the same reaction. It's a voicing tool.
The output myth (and why DC resistance won't tell you anything)
This is where the internet fights hardest. A stronger magnet does contribute a little more output — it's a stronger field, so the coil sees more change. But it's a small bump, not a jump from vintage to high-gain. Most of what people describe as “more output” after an A5 swap is really the brighter, tighter EQ making the pickup feel more aggressive.
Worth knowing if you're shopping used pickups: the magnet does not change the DC resistance reading. That number comes entirely from the coil. A pickup with no magnet at all still reads the same ohms. So don't try to guess the magnet from a resistance spec — they're unrelated.
Where the debate actually lives
Two honest caveats, because I'd rather you know them than catch me glossing over them.
First, the difference is context-dependent. A recurring theme I trust from other players: sitting at home doing before-and-after clips, A2 versus A5 can seem like splitting hairs. Put the same guitar in a loud band and the difference in how it cuts becomes much more obvious. If you A/B in your bedroom and shrug, that doesn't mean it's placebo — it means you're testing in the wrong room.
Second, magnets age. Alnico slowly loses a bit of strength over decades, and a “partially degaussed” A5 is a big part of why some old PAF-era pickups sound softer and sweeter than a modern reissue. That's real physics, not just vintage romance. It's also why some builders deliberately use aged or “calibrated” magnets to chase that voice.
So should you swap yours?
Here's my bench-level advice. If a pickup is almost right — a great humbucker that's just a little too bright, or a little too dark — a magnet swap is one of the best-value fixes you can do. Real magnets cost a few dollars, the pickup doesn't have to come apart much, and you keep the coil you already like. Going A5 to A2 to tame brightness, or A2 to A5 to add cut and clarity, is a proven move.
But if you fundamentally don't like the pickup — wrong output level, wrong overall character — no magnet is going to rescue it. That's a pickup change, not a magnet change. Don't spend three swaps chasing a voice the coil can't get to.
And before you touch a soldering iron: set your pickup height first. Raising or lowering a humbucker a couple of turns changes brightness, output and string balance more than a lot of people expect, and it costs nothing. Plenty of “I need a different magnet” problems are really just a pickup sitting too low or too high.
