PRS Swamp Ash Special with Maple Fretboard 1996 - 2009 - Tri-Color Sunburst

I’ve handled a lot of PRS guitars, and this particular Swamp Ash Special has that old-school PRS thing that feels harder and harder to find now. It’s not a case queen, and honestly, that’s part of what makes it cool. This one feels like a real-deal player — the kind of guitar that has been around long enough to earn some marks, but still has the feel, sound, and personality that make you understand why these early Swamp Ash Specials have such a following.

The Tri-Color Sunburst over the ash body has a killer look to it. You get that golden center, dark red outer edge, visible ash grain, and a glossy black wrap around the sides and back that gives it a slightly meaner, more stage-worn presence than a clean modern PRS. The maple fretboard is a huge part of the vibe too. It gives the guitar a snappier, more immediate feel under the fingers, and visually it just works beautifully with the burst.

The Swamp Ash Special was one of PRS’s more versatile bolt-on models, built around a swamp ash body, maple neck, 25” scale length, 22 frets, PRS tremolo, and an H-S-H style pickup layout. Early examples like this are known for the McCarty-style humbuckers with a Seymour Duncan Vintage Rail-style middle pickup setup, though I’m listing the pickups as “unsure” since I haven’t personally verified them as original. The important thing is how this one sounds — and this thing absolutely rips. The pickups are extremely high output, punchy, and aggressive in the best way, but the middle pickup and switching still give it more range than a straight dual-humbucker guitar. It has that PRS precision, but with more bite and attitude than you might expect.

Playability is the biggest reason I like this one so much. The action is low and comfortable, the intonation is spot on, and there’s no buzz. The frets are in very good shape and feel round, smooth, and buttery. The neck has a great shape to it — nice and rounded, but not overly thick or clunky. It has just enough meat to feel substantial without slowing you down. Out of the batch, this is honestly one of my current favorite guitars to pick up and play.

Condition-wise, this is an older player and it looks the part. The body and neck show light chips, scratches, and general wear throughout, along with buckle rash on the back. Nothing about the wear affects how it plays, and to me, it fits the guitar’s personality. It has the kind of honest cosmetic aging that makes sense on a nearly 30-year-old PRS that’s clearly been enjoyed. The neck also has some light flame that catches nicely in person. It weighs 8.07 pounds on my scale and comes with the original hardshell case.
