I’ve handled quite a few PRS Customs over the years—including some really great ones—but every once in a while you come across one that just feels a little more alive than the rest… this is one of those.

This is a 1991 PRS Custom 24 10-Top—but what makes it interesting is that it’s from that transitional early era where it’s essentially built like a 1990, coming out of the original Annapolis shop before PRS scaled into their larger operation. That alone puts it in a different category—these early builds have a feel and character that later production guitars just don’t quite replicate.

Right away, the top pulls you in. It’s officially a Grey Black finish, but in the light there’s this subtle blue tint that shifts depending on the angle—gives it a ton of depth and personality without being over-the-top. The 10-top figuring is strong and consistent, with that classic PRS ripple that almost looks like it’s moving when you tilt it.

Condition-wise, it’s exactly what you’d hope for from a well-kept early ‘90s piece. It’s not a case queen—and honestly, that’s part of what makes it great. There are some bumps, chips, and light buckle rash here and there, but nothing that takes away from the overall presence. It still presents extremely well, and more importantly, it feels like a guitar that’s been played and loved, not just stored.

The details on this one are where it really separates itself. You’ve got the smaller PRS headstock logo from that era, the Brazilian board (confirmed), and those original winged tuners. The neck carve leans closer to a DGT-style feel than a typical Custom 24—just a bit more substance in hand without ever feeling bulky. It’s incredibly comfortable and makes you want to keep playing.

And then there’s the tone… this is easily one of the best sounding PRS guitars I’ve had my hands on in a while. The early HFS pickups in this thing just hit differently—clear, punchy, and articulate, but with a rawness that newer PRS pickups sometimes smooth out. It has that perfect balance of precision and attitude. Whether you’re running clean or pushing it, it responds in a really musical, expressive way.

This is one of those guitars that reminds you why PRS built the reputation they did in the first place.

What stood out to me

  • Early Annapolis-era build—feels closer to a ‘90 than a typical ‘91
  • Killer Grey Black finish with a subtle blue shift that adds depth
  • Strong 10-top figuring with that classic PRS movement
  • Neck carve feels slightly fuller—very comfortable and addictive to play
  • Original early HFS pickups sound incredible—clear but with real character
  • Honest wear throughout, but presents great for its age
