There’s something about a proper SG that just feels dangerous in the best possible way—and this 2021 Gibson SG Standard ’61 absolutely nails that vibe. Lightweight, fast, aggressive, and unapologetically rock and roll. This particular one is a killer example in Ebony, and the finish looks exactly how you want it to: deep, glossy, and mean. Under the light, that black nitro has that liquid mirror look that makes the chrome hardware pop hard against the body. It’s the kind of guitar that looks fast before you even touch it.
This is Gibson’s modern take on the legendary early-’60s SG formula, complete with the sought-after ’61 styling cues: slim, sculpted mahogany body, small pickguard, vintage-style aesthetics, and the stoptail configuration that a lot of players prefer for simplicity, tuning stability, and direct resonance. At just 6.61 pounds on my scale, it has exactly the kind of featherweight feel SG lovers chase—effortless on a strap and ridiculously comfortable for long sessions.
Playability is where this one really shines. It came from a collector-owned environment, and it shows. The setup is strong, intonation is spot on, electronics passed perfectly, and it genuinely plays amazing. The neck has that fast, inviting SG feel that makes riffs and upper fret access feel effortless. Gibson’s Burstbucker pickups in these are a huge part of the appeal—clear, articulate, punchy, and capable of everything from vintage bite to thick modern crunch.
Condition is excellent overall. The body presents beautifully, frets are in fantastic shape, and overall it’s clearly been well cared for. The only notable mention is a small ding on the side of the neck near the headstock, but otherwise this one is exceptionally clean.
