This Midtown has a really cool spot in the Gibson lineup because it does not feel like a straight ES-335 copy, and it does not feel like a Les Paul either. It kind of lives in that middle lane: semi-hollow resonance, P-90 bite, and a more compact, solid-feeling body that still has some air around the notes.
The Wine Red finish is the first thing that grabs you. It has that deep, rich red Gibson look, but the wood grain underneath gives it a lot more character than a flat solid color would. In person, it has a classy vintage feel without looking overly delicate or museum-like. The cream binding, cream P-90 covers, gold knobs, and chrome hardware all work really well together, and the whole guitar has a clean, upscale look without being flashy in the wrong way.
This one is in excellent, near-new condition. The body and neck are both excellent, the frets are excellent, and the guitar has been checked over fully. Electronics passed, intonation is spot on, and there is no buzzing. The setup feels more factory than super-low shred setup, but it plays comfortably, rings out nicely, and has a lot of natural resonance. It weighs 7.72 pounds on my scale, which is right where I like to see a semi-hollow Gibson like this — light enough to be comfortable, but still with enough body behind the notes.
The Midtown Standard P-90 uses a chambered mahogany body with a maple top, so it has some of that semi-hollow openness without feeling overly large or fragile. The mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard keep it familiar in the hands, while the dual P-90s give it a different personality than the humbucker versions. These pickups have that raw, vocal midrange thing P-90s are known for — clear and open when clean, but with enough grit and attitude when pushed. It is a great setup if you want something that can cover blues, roots rock, indie, classic rock, and anything where you want more bite than a humbucker but more muscle than a typical single coil.
What stood out to me:
- The Wine Red finish looks killer in person, especially with the visible grain underneath
- Excellent near-new condition with a very clean body, neck, and fretwork
- Factory-feeling setup with no buzzing and strong resonance
- Original P-90 pickups have that clear, punchy, slightly gritty Gibson single-coil character
- More comfortable and manageable than a full-size ES-style guitar
- 7.72 pounds on my scale
- Comes with the original Gibson hardshell case and case candy
This is one of those Gibsons that makes a lot of sense once you actually sit with it. It has more character than a basic solidbody, but it is still practical, comfortable, and easy to play. The P-90s give it a really usable voice, the semi-hollow construction adds some life to the notes, and the condition on this one makes it feel like it was bought, cared for, and barely touched.
