I’ve had a steady rotation of Les Paul Studios come through lately, and most of them hit that solid, reliable Gibson tone—but every now and then one shows up that’s just clearly on another level. This particular one is that guitar.
There’s something about a blacked-out Les Paul that just feels right. This Ebony finish has that deep, mirror-like look that only black guitars pull off, and while it does show the typical light swirls and fine finish marks you’d expect, it’s been really well cared for overall. Nothing distracting—just honest, surface-level signs that it’s been played and enjoyed.
But the real story here isn’t just the look—it’s what’s under the hood.
This one has been seriously upgraded in all the right ways. The Seymour Duncan Slash APH-2 set brings a completely different character compared to stock Studio pickups—warmer, more vocal mids, tighter low end, and a sweetness on the top that really comes alive when you dig in. It’s got that classic Les Paul growl, but with more articulation and punch. You can feel the difference immediately.
Pair that with the Gunstreet 50’s-style wiring harness, and now your volume and tone controls actually work with you instead of against you. Roll things back and it stays clear and usable—no mud, no dulling out. The foil-lined cavities are a nice touch too, keeping things quiet and clean even under gain.
And then there’s the Plek job from Sweetwater—which, honestly, just takes everything to another level. The neck on this one feels incredibly consistent all the way up, with low, smooth action and zero dead spots. It plays effortlessly. This is one of those guitars you pick up and immediately notice how “dialed” it feels.
Structurally, it’s everything you want out of a modern Studio—solid mahogany body, maple top, comfortable neck profile, and that stripped-back aesthetic without the fretboard binding. Some people actually prefer this feel, and on this one it just works.
What stood out to me:
- Slash APH-2 pickups completely elevate the tone—warm, punchy, and articulate
- Gunstreet 50’s wiring makes the controls incredibly usable and responsive
- Plek’d setup gives it a smooth, low-action feel across the entire neck
- Clean Ebony finish with only light, typical surface swirls
- Overall feel and tone easily outperform most stock Studios
It comes with the original Gibson padded leather gig bag, which is a great match for it.
