This is a 2025 Gibson Les Paul Studio Session in Cobalt Burst, one of the more feature-packed takes Gibson has done on the Studio platform. The Session takes the stripped-down Les Paul concept and adds a surprisingly premium set of player-focused upgrades: an Ultra Modern weight-relieved mahogany body, carved AA figured maple cap, SlimTaper mahogany neck with Gibson’s Modern Contoured Heel, bound ebony fingerboard, and a full set of push/pull electronics built around ’57 Classic humbuckers.
The Cobalt Burst finish looks fantastic on this particular guitar. There is a lot more figuring in the maple than you might expect from something carrying the Studio name, with broad flame running across both halves of the top and plenty of movement as the angle changes. The blue transitions from bright turquoise through deeper cobalt around the edges, while the natural mahogany sides provide a really nice contrast. Black plastics and uncovered black-ringed pickups keep the whole thing looking modern without taking away from the figured top.
Electronics are one of the biggest reasons the Studio Session stands apart. It uses a Gibson ’57 Classic in the neck and hotter ’57 Classic Plus in the bridge, giving it the warm, articulate PAF-style character those pickups are known for while still having enough output and bite from the bridge position when you push it. Both volume controls are push/pull for coil tapping, while the tone controls add phase switching and Pure Bypass. That gives you a much wider palette than the standard two-humbucker Les Paul layout—full humbuckers, tapped sounds, out-of-phase combinations and a direct-output option are all available without adding switches all over the guitar.
The neck is another major upgrade. Gibson pairs the fast SlimTaper profile with a bound ebony fingerboard and Modern Contoured Heel, which removes a lot of the bulky transition you normally feel when reaching the upper frets on a traditional Les Paul. It still feels unmistakably like a Gibson, but access higher on the neck is noticeably easier. The frets on this one are excellent, the current setup feels great, action sits comfortably in the medium-to-low range, and intonation is spot on.
It is also exceptionally light for a full-size Les Paul at 7.36 lbs on my scale. The Ultra Modern weight relief is doing some real work here, and the result is a guitar that is considerably easier to wear for a long set than the typical nine-plus-pound Les Paul. Balance is good, the neck feels comfortable, and it has none of the cumbersome feeling that heavier examples can develop after an hour or two.
Condition is excellent overall. The body, neck and backside all inspected extremely well, with only a handful of very minor surface scratches and small signs of handling keeping me from calling it flawless. There is nothing significant that takes away from how the guitar presents. The ebony board is excellent, frets are excellent, electronics have been fully tested, and it has a fresh set of strings.
It includes the original Gibson factory gig bag along with the complete original case candy.
