This one has a really cool thing going on because it still feels like a proper Les Paul Standard ’60s, but the upgrades give it a little more attitude than the stock setup. The Bourbon Burst top has a darker, moodier look than some of the brighter bursts, with that deep red outer edge fading into a warm amber center. The flame isn’t over-the-top in a fake-looking way either — it has a nice, natural movement to it, especially around the lower bout and under the pickups.

This is a 2019 Gibson Les Paul Standard ’60s, so at its core you’re getting the modern Gibson USA take on the late-’60s style Les Paul: non-weight-relieved mahogany body, carved maple top, mahogany neck, bound rosewood fretboard, trapezoid inlays, 24.75” scale, ABR-1 bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and the slimmer ’60s-style neck profile. Where this one separates itself is the pickup and tuner setup. Instead of the stock Gibson Burstbuckers, it has a DiMarzio Super 2 in the neck and a matching DiMarzio Super Distortion in the bridge, along with upgraded Grover locking tuners.

That combination gives this guitar a more aggressive, Double Trouble-inspired vibe without turning it into something tacky or overdone. The cream pickup rings, double-cream pickups, reflector knobs, and Bourbon Burst top all work together really well visually. It still looks classy, but it has a little more bite to it.

Playability is right where I like to see it. It has a recent setup, the intonation is spot on, the frets are in excellent shape, and it plays cleanly up and down the neck. The ’60s neck is comfortable and familiar if you like a Les Paul that doesn’t feel overly huge in the hand. Tonally, this is not the sleepy vintage-output version of a Les Paul. The Super Distortion bridge has the punch and push people buy those pickups for, while the Super 2 neck keeps things clear and articulate instead of getting muddy. It’s a very usable setup if you want a Les Paul that can cover classic rock, hard rock, heavier lead work, and still clean up when needed.

Condition is excellent overall. The body and neck both inspected excellent, the electronics tested properly, the fretboard is clean, and there are no major issues to note. It has been kept in great shape and presents really well. Weight is 9.1 lbs on my scale, which feels very normal for a full-bodied, non-weight-relieved Les Paul Standard.

What stood out to me:

  • Bourbon Burst finish has a darker, more serious look with nice movement in the flame
  • Tasteful Double Trouble-inspired look without feeling like a parts guitar
  • DiMarzio Super 2 neck and Super Distortion bridge give it way more punch than a stock setup
  • Grover locking tuners are a practical upgrade and make string changes easier
  • Slimmer ’60s-style neck feels comfortable and fast without losing the Les Paul feel
  • Excellent fret condition with spot-on intonation
  • Plays cleanly and feels dialed in
  • 9.1 lbs on my scale
  • Original hardshell case and complete case candy included

This is a great one for somebody who wants the feel and build of a real Gibson Les Paul Standard, but doesn’t necessarily want the same stock pickup formula everyone else has. It still has the classy Bourbon Burst look, but the pickup setup gives it a much more alive, aggressive personality.
