There’s a reason the Les Paul Standard ’50s sits right in the middle of what so many players picture when they think “real Les Paul.” Big feel, simple controls, a solid mahogany/maple build, and that familiar Heritage Cherry Sunburst look that just works. This 2019 has that classic Standard thing going on, but with enough flame and color movement in the top to make it feel a little more special than a plain, ordinary example.

The top is really the first thing that caught my eye. It has a nice wide flame pattern through the center and lower bout, with that red edge fading into a warm amber/orange center. It’s not overly perfect or sterile looking, which I actually like on a Les Paul. It still has that old-school Gibson character, especially paired with the cream plastics, nickel hardware, trapezoid inlays, and gloss nitro finish.

Spec-wise, this is the good, traditional Les Paul recipe: non-weight-relieved mahogany body, carved maple top, mahogany neck, rosewood fretboard, 24.75” scale length, 12” radius, 22 medium jumbo frets, ABR-1 Tune-o-matic bridge, stopbar tailpiece, and the original Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups. The ’50s neck is the bigger part of the story here. It has that fuller, rounded feel in the hand — not some skinny modern neck — and it gives the guitar a more substantial, planted feel when you’re digging into chords or bending higher up the neck.

The pickups are punchy and very much in the lane you’d want from this model. The Burstbucker 1 in the neck gives you that warm, vocal Les Paul thing without getting muddy, and the Burstbucker 2 in the bridge has the extra bite and push you want for rock leads and heavier rhythm work. The handwired controls with Orange Drop caps are part of the appeal too — not because it needs a spec-sheet flex, but because the volume and tone controls actually feel useful instead of just being “all on or all off.”

This one plays really well. The neck is straight, the intonation is spot on, the frets are excellent, and the setup is strong right where I like to see it. It has that solid Les Paul feel without fighting you. Weight is 9.1 lbs on my scale, which puts it in that substantial but still very normal Les Paul range.

Condition is excellent overall. There are some light marks here and there, along with a few scuffs on the side, but nothing that takes away from the guitar or points to abuse. It presents very clean, the neck is excellent, the electronics tested properly, and it comes with the original Gibson hardshell case.

What stood out to me:

  • Great-looking Heritage Cherry Sunburst top with real flame and color movement
  • Original Burstbucker 1 and Burstbucker 2 pickups
  • Fuller ’50s neck feel without being awkward or clunky
  • Non-weight-relieved mahogany body with carved maple top
  • Handwired controls with Orange Drop capacitors
  • Straight neck, excellent frets, and strong recent setup
  • 9.1 lbs on my scale
  • Clean overall condition with only light scuffs/marks from normal handling
  • Original Gibson hardshell case included

This is just a strong, honest Les Paul Standard ’50s. No weird mods, no major issues, no guesswork — just the classic Gibson formula in a good finish, with a nice top, original electronics, and the kind of feel that makes these guitars so easy to understand once they’re in your hands.
