Gibson Les Paul Standard 2018 - Mojave Burst

The Mojave Burst is the first thing that gets me on this one. It is one of the less common finishes from Gibson’s 2018 Standard lineup, and this particular top is ridiculous. There is flame almost everywhere you look, but it is not perfectly uniform or sterile—the figuring shifts from tighter lines around the upper bout into broader, more dramatic movement across the center and lower half. The warm amber/brown coloring fits it perfectly and gives the whole guitar a much more natural look than a brighter traditional burst.

At 8.45 pounds on my scale, it is also a really comfortable Les Paul. The 2018 Standard uses Gibson’s slimmer asymmetrical neck shape, and this one feels quick and easy in the hand. The current setup is exactly where I like it, with low action, spot-on intonation and excellent frets. It is one of those Les Pauls that immediately feels easy rather than something you have to fight.

The electronics are where this particular guitar gets especially interesting. The original BurstBucker Pro Rhythm and Lead pickups are still installed, but the factory PCB has been replaced with a traditional hand-wired setup using 500k pots and Bumblebee-style capacitors. The control cavity has also been copper shielded. To my ear, the difference is immediately noticeable—the pickups feel more open and alive, the controls have a much more natural taper as you roll the volume and tone back, and the guitar is exceptionally quiet.

I spent some time specifically testing the volume and tone roll-off because that is where this setup really shines. Instead of the sound collapsing as you back the controls down, there is a much more gradual and usable change. You can actually work the guitar from the controls rather than leaving everything pinned at 10. The shielding also does a surprisingly good job of keeping unwanted noise down.

It has also been upgraded with Grover locking tuners, which fit the guitar well and make string changes straightforward. Between those, the rewired electronics and the shielding, the modifications all feel practical rather than like someone was trying to turn the guitar into something it is not.

Condition is excellent. There are a handful of light finish scratches here and there if you go looking for them under direct light, but I am not seeing any major dings, chips or blemishes worth calling out. The body, neck and fretboard are all extremely clean, and overall it presents very close to new.

What I like most about this one is that the upgrades improve the parts of a modern Les Paul that I would actually want improved without changing what the guitar fundamentally is. It still has the original Gibson pickups and the character of a 2018 Standard, but the traditional wiring, 500k pots and shielding make the electronics feel much more alive and responsive.

Then there is the top. I see plenty of figured Les Pauls, but the combination of this much flame and the Mojave Burst finish is not something that turns up very often. Add the lighter weight and how well it currently plays, and this is a particularly good example of the 2018 Standard.
