Gibson Les Paul Classic Plus 2001 - Translucent Amber

This is exactly the kind of older Les Paul that makes me stop and look twice. The Translucent Amber finish has aged into this really rich golden color, and the flame pattern is outstanding. It is not one of those perfectly straight, overly uniform tops—the figuring has a lot of movement and changes dramatically depending on the angle. This is also another one where my lighting does not fully do the top justice. In person, the flame is even more pronounced.

For a 2001 guitar, the condition is remarkable. The top is about as clean as I could reasonably hope to find on one of these, and the neck is equally nice. There are a few light bumps and scratches around the back and sides, including some marks around the rear cavity cover, but nothing that takes away from the guitar overall. It has clearly been played and cared for rather than abused.

The neck is one of my favorite parts of these older Classics. It has that quicker, slimmer feel that immediately separates it from a big '50s Les Paul neck, and this one is currently set up really well. The action is comfortable, intonation is spot on, and the fretboard feels great. The original frets are still in fantastic shape for the age, with the original fret-end binding intact. That is something I always like seeing on an older Gibson because it tells you quite a bit about how much actual wear the guitar has seen.

The Lollar pickups currently installed are probably my favorite upgrade on the whole guitar. They keep the uncovered black look that belongs on this model, but to my ear they are noticeably punchier and more alive than the originals. There is more immediacy when you dig into the strings, better clarity between notes, and the guitar just feels more responsive through an amp. The original Gibson pickups are included as well, so nothing is being lost by the upgrade and it can always be returned to its factory configuration.

Another really cool piece that stayed with this guitar is the original "1960" pickguard. It has never been installed and still has the original sticker on the back. These old guards have become collectible pieces on their own, and I would personally leave the guitar exactly as it sits rather than cover up this top.

There is just something about these older Les Paul Classics that feels different from a brand-new guitar, and this one has survived exceptionally well. You get the aged look of the inlays, the naturally matured nickel hardware, an incredible top, and a guitar that has more than two decades behind it without looking beaten up. Add the Lollars and the fact that the original pickups and untouched pickguard stayed with it, and this is a really complete example.
