I’ve had a handful of Flying Vs come through over the years, but there’s something about the early 2010s faded finishes that just hits different—and this 2012 Faded Cherry is a perfect example of that understated, raw Gibson vibe.
This particular one has that worn-in, almost satin feel that only gets better with time. The faded cherry finish lets the grain subtly show through, giving it a more organic, broken-in look compared to the glossy counterparts. It doesn’t try too hard—it just looks like a guitar that’s meant to be played.
And that’s exactly how it feels in hand. Lightweight, resonant, and surprisingly comfortable once you get it dialed in, this one has that classic V energy but with a more relaxed, broken-in personality. The neck sits right in that sweet spot—not too chunky, not too slim—just a really easy player that invites you to dig in.
Tone-wise, this is everything you’d expect from a proper Gibson V. It’s got that punchy, aggressive bite in the bridge with enough clarity to keep things articulate, while the neck brings in warmth and fullness for smoother passages. It’s versatile enough to cover a lot of ground, but it really shines when you lean into it a bit.
Condition-wise, it’s in very good shape, especially for a faded finish guitar of this age. There’s some honest wear along the lower body edges—exactly where you’d expect it on a V—but nothing that affects playability. If anything, it adds to the character. The rest of the guitar has held up really well, and the frets are in great shape with plenty of life left.
What stood out to me:
- Faded Cherry finish with a natural, worn-in look and visible grain
- Lightweight and resonant—feels alive in your hands
- Comfortable neck profile that strikes a great middle ground
- Classic Flying V tone—punchy, aggressive, and articulate
- Honest wear on the lower edges that adds character without affecting playability
- Frets in great shape with smooth playability across the board
- Appears to be all original
- Includes original Gibson gig bag
This is one of those guitars that doesn’t feel sterile or overproduced—it’s got some edge to it, some personality. The kind of piece that feels better the more you play it.
