Some guitars feel special the moment you pick them up, and this Gibson Custom Shop ’57 Les Paul Standard Reissue is absolutely one of those. Built as a special order Made-to-Measure instrument, it stands out from the typical R7 you see on the market.
Most ’57 Reissues are finished in Gibson’s VOS treatment, but this one was ordered with a full gloss showroom finish, which really makes the Goldtop pop and gives the guitar a much more striking look. The contrast between the rich gold top, cream plastics, and the beautifully grained mahogany back is just classic Les Paul perfection.
The neck profile is exactly what you hope for from a great R7 — a big, chunky 50s neck that fills the hand in the best way possible. It’s substantial without feeling cumbersome and has that incredibly comfortable feel that makes you want to keep playing it long after you planned to stop. The frets are smooth and buttery, showing very little wear and playing effortlessly all the way up the neck.
Tone-wise, this guitar delivers everything people chase in a Custom Shop ’57. The Custom Shop PAF-style humbuckers provide that perfect mix of warmth, clarity, and punch. Clean tones are rich and articulate, while pushing an amp brings out that classic Les Paul growl with tons of sustain.
This one has been very well maintained and is in excellent overall condition. There are only a few minor cosmetic marks worth noting:
• A small ding between the control knobs
• A tiny ding on the upper bout where your forearm rests
• One small ding on the back, likely from a belt
• A minor finish stress line near the neck pickup ring screw (pictured)
None of these affect playability in any way and are very typical light wear for a guitar that has been carefully played and enjoyed.
When I picked this one up, I honestly planned to hold onto it long term as part of my collection, but it’s simply become too valuable to justify keeping around. It deserves to be played and enjoyed by someone who will appreciate how great these Custom Shop reissues really are.
