This 1968 Fender Wildwood Coronado II is one of those guitars that is almost impossible to appreciate until you see it in person. The Wildwood finish is completely unlike a conventional sunburst or stained top—the dark streaking runs through the entire body, front and back, and gives this one a ton of character. At nearly 60 years old, it has exactly the kind of natural aging I want to see on a vintage guitar without feeling abused or worn out.
What surprised me most is how well this one actually plays. The action is low and effortless, the intonation is spot-on, and there are no buzzing or dead spots that stood out during inspection. The original frets absolutely show their age, including some light divoting higher up the board, but they still play remarkably well. I cleaned and polished them during inspection, and even the original painted fret nibs are still present.
The electronics are another highlight. Everything passed my complete electronics test, and the original pickups have a really cool voice. The bridge has plenty of that dry, cutting twang you want from an old Fender, while the neck side gets rounder and warmer without becoming muddy. Even more impressive for a guitar this age, the volume and tone controls operate with surprisingly little noise.
At 6.61 lbs on my scale, it feels extremely light and comfortable for a full-size semi-hollow guitar. Between the weight, low action and the way the body responds acoustically, it has that lively feel you hope an old hollow Fender will have.

I’m calling the guitar Excellent for its age, but I want to be clear about what that means on a 1968 instrument. This is not a near-mint modern guitar. There is natural lacquer aging, patina, hardware wear, fret wear and other evidence of its life. What makes it exceptional to me is how intact and well cared for everything still is. The wood, finish, electronics and major components have survived remarkably well, and it gives me the impression that it was played earlier in its life and then spent a very long stretch tucked away in its case.
The frets have some light divoting, particularly farther up the board, but nothing that affected playability during my inspection. The current setup works extremely well with the existing fret level.
