This is a 1991 Fender Strat Ultra in Antique Burst with a flame top, factory chainsaw case, and the kind of high-end early ’90s Fender feel that makes these so cool. The Strat Ultra sat at the top of Fender’s U.S. production lineup during this era, taking the Strat Plus idea and pushing it further with upgraded appointments, a more versatile pickup system, an ebony fretboard, roller nut, locking tuner setup, and a flashier flame-top look.
This one has a great player-grade vibe while still presenting beautifully. The Antique Burst finish looks fantastic over the figured top, with warm amber and orange tones through the center and a darker edge that gives it a really sharp, almost boutique Strat look. It has plenty of honest cosmetic wear, but visually, it still has that “special Strat” presence the Ultra models are known for.
The Lace Sensor setup is a big part of what makes these guitars interesting. This model is known for its wide tonal range, and this one absolutely delivers. The stock configuration used multiple Lace Sensor pickups with the dual-sensor bridge setup and the Jeff Beck-style micro toggle switching, giving it everything from glassy Strat tones to thicker, more aggressive sounds that push well beyond a normal SSS Strat. It is one of those guitars where you can sit with it for a while and keep finding usable sounds.
The stock pickguard and wiring were fairly worn, so this guitar now has a brand new JB-style loaded pickguard from Lace Music. It was built by Lace themselves, matches the original-style configuration, and keeps the functioning micro toggle switch. The original factory pickguard with the stock wiring is also included. The pickups are new lace sensors, and the tuners have been changed to fender locking tuners as well, but the upgrades were done tastefully and keep the guitar very much in the spirit of what a Strat Ultra is supposed to be.
Playability is where this one really shines. It has that comfortable early ’90s Fender feel, and the ebony fretboard gives it a slicker, more refined response than a standard Strat. The frets are in very good shape, the intonation is spot on, and it sounds incredible. It weighs 7 lbs 9 oz on my scale, which is a great weight for one of these and makes it easy to enjoy for longer sessions.
Condition-wise, this is a very good player-grade example. There are scratches, chips, dings, and general cosmetic wear throughout, especially around the edges and body, but there are no structural issues and nothing affecting playability. The neck is solid, the fretboard is fine, the electronics test properly, and the guitar has a great feel in the hands. It includes the original Fender chainsaw case. No case candy is included.
