This is a circa-2004 Fender Japan Jag-Stang JAG-70 in Sonic Blue—a seriously cool Made-in-Japan take on Kurt Cobain’s original hybrid design. The Jag-Stang was built around the idea of combining the offset personality of a Jaguar with the shorter scale feel and simplicity of a Mustang, resulting in one of Fender’s most distinctive and recognizable models.

The Sonic Blue finish looks fantastic in person. It has that clean, slightly turquoise vintage Fender look that immediately pops against the pearloid pickguard, chrome hardware, and amber-tinted maple neck. The finish presents beautifully overall, and this one is in excellent condition with only a couple of very light scratches on the back that are hard to notice unless you are looking closely for them.

This is the Japanese JAG-70 version with the 24-inch short scale, basswood body, maple neck, rosewood fretboard, and Fender Dynamic Vibrato bridge. The shorter scale gives it a looser, more effortless feel under the fingers than a standard Strat or Tele, making bends easy and chords comfortable without losing that familiar Fender response.

The Jag-Stang switching setup is one of the coolest parts of the design. It uses individual Mustang-style slider switches for each pickup, giving you access to the neck pickup, bridge pickup, both pickups together, and the out-of-phase combined setting. It is a far more versatile setup than it first appears, and there is a lot of usable tonal range packed into this guitar.

The bridge pickup has been upgraded to a Seymour Duncan PA-TB2b Distortion Parallel Axis Trembucker. It is a hotter, more aggressive bridge humbucker than the original Fender unit and gives this Jag-Stang a much stronger voice for higher-gain rock, grunge, punk, and heavier alternative tones. The neck single-coil appears to be the original Fender-style unit, but I cannot definitively confirm that, so I am listing it as unknown.

This one plays really well. The neck is straight, the action is right where it should be, intonation is spot on, and the frets are in excellent shape. It has excellent strings, sounds great, and feels immediately comfortable in the hands. The short scale, smooth neck, tremolo bridge, and upgraded bridge humbucker make it a really fun player that can cover far more ground than the unusual shape might suggest.

It includes a gig bag.
