Fender American Vintage II '61 Stratocaster 2024 - Fiesta Red

This is one of those guitars I bought because it just looked cool. It has mojo. It’s a Fender American Vintage II ’61 Stratocaster in Fiesta Red that’s been intentionally relic’d, and I think the finished result gives it way more personality than a clean example. The heavy wear against the bright Fiesta Red, aged-looking plastics, rosewood board and vintage hardware all work together really well. It has that beaten-up early-’60s Strat look without actually feeling like an old, worn-out guitar when you pick it up.

Underneath the relic work, this is still an American Vintage II ’61 Strat, so Fender did a lot right before anyone ever started aging it. It has the 1961 “C” maple neck, slab rosewood fingerboard, 7.25" radius, vintage-style appointments and Pure Vintage ’61 Strat pickups. At 7.8 lbs on my scale, it also has that nice traditional Strat weight and balance.

What surprised me most is how fresh the playing surfaces still feel. The neck is excellent, the rosewood board looks great, and the frets have an almost mirror-like polish to them. It plays beautifully with a comfortable medium action, the intonation is spot on, and the current setup passed inspection. It basically gives you the look of a guitar that has lived a very long life while still playing like a much newer instrument.

The Pure Vintage ’61 pickups fit this guitar perfectly. They have plenty of clarity and snap, but they’re not thin or harsh. The neck pickup has that round, woody Strat sound, while the bridge stays articulate and lively. All electronics were tested and are working exactly as they should.

The relic work is aftermarket rather than factory Fender relicing, and it’s definitely the defining feature of this guitar. The finish has been intentionally worn through in the areas you’d expect to see on a heavily played vintage Strat, especially around the arm contour, edges and back. I personally think it came out great. It has a bold, exaggerated road-worn look and photographs incredibly well.

Condition is graded Good because of the intentional finish removal, but that really doesn’t tell the whole story. Outside of the relic treatment, the guitar appears to have seen very little actual use. The neck, fretboard and frets are all in excellent shape, the hardware and plastics still present very cleanly, and even the original paperwork and accessories look barely touched. It still has its hangtag as well.

I love the contrast here. Visually it looks like something that has been dragged around clubs for decades, but the second you start playing it, everything feels tight, clean and fresh. If you like heavily aged Strats but don’t necessarily want decades of actual fret and neck wear that usually comes with them, this is a really fun combination.
