Here is the short answer, and it is the one I give people across the bench a couple of times a week: nut width and neck profile are two completely different things, and most players who say a neck feels "thin" or "chunky" are actually reacting to the profile, not the width. Nut width sets how much side-to-side room your fretting hand has. Neck profile sets how the back of the neck fills your palm. You can change one without touching the other, and the one you notice most depends entirely on your hands and how you play.

I get why they blur together. Both get described with vague words like "fast" and "comfortable," and spec sheets rarely explain either clearly. So let's take them apart the way I would if you handed me two guitars and asked why one feels better.

Three measurements people constantly mix up

Before we go further, it helps to see that there are really three separate numbers hiding in "how a neck feels," and they are independent of each other.

Nut width is how wide the neck is at the nut, measured straight across. Neck profile is the shape and depth of the back of the neck, the part your thumb and palm actually touch. String spacing at the bridge is how far the strings spread apart down by your picking hand, and it is not locked to nut width at all. Two necks with the same nut width can carry different string spacing, different profiles, and different fingerboard radii, and feel like distant cousins.

What nut width actually is (and the numbers that matter)

Nut width is the easy one to measure and the easy one to obsess over. It is just the width of the fingerboard at the nut, and it controls how much space sits between your strings and the edge of the board down at the first few frets. Wider means more room between strings and a little more margin before the outer strings slip off the edge. Narrower feels tighter and, to a lot of players, "faster."

The catch is that the real-world differences between mainstream electrics are small. Here are the specs I see most often on the bench:

Fender's traditional spec is 1.650 inches (about 41.9 mm), though plenty of modern Fenders run a hair wider around 1.685 inches. Gibson's long-standing standard is 1.695 inches, usually printed as 1 11/16 inches (about 43 mm), and PRS sits right in that same 1 11/16-inch neighborhood on most models. Once you get out to 1.75 inches or more you are into genuinely wide territory: classical-style necks, and oddballs like some 2015 Gibsons that used a wider board.

Do the math and the whole span from the narrowest common electric to a wide neck is only about 2.6 mm. Spread that across the five gaps between six strings and you are talking roughly half a millimeter of extra room per gap between a Fender and a Gibson. That is not nothing, especially if you have big hands or you fingerpick, but it is a lot smaller than the internet makes it sound. If a guitar feels dramatically different, nut width is rarely carrying that difference alone.

What neck profile actually is

Profile is the shape of the back of the neck, described with letters that roughly match the cross-section: a rounded C, a flatter-backed D, a pointy V, and the deep, round "baseball bat" shapes people call a chunky C or a soft U. It is measured in depth, front to back, usually at the 1st and 12th frets, and that depth combined with the shoulders of the shape is what your palm reads.

This is the one that fools people. When a customer tells me a neck feels "thin," nine times out of ten they hand me a guitar with a shallow profile, not a narrow nut. A slim '60s-style Gibson neck and a chunky '50s one can share the exact same 1.695-inch nut width and feel like totally different instruments, because one fills your hand and the other disappears. If you have ever loved a neck without knowing why, go measure its depth. That number tells you more about the feel than the width does.

The picking hand: string spacing at the bridge

The third piece is string spacing at the bridge, and this is the one your picking hand cares about. It is the spread from low E to high E where the strings cross the saddles, and it is set by the bridge, not the nut. A Tele bridge, a Gibson tune-o-matic, and a Strat trem can all carry slightly different spacing. If you fingerpick, hybrid pick, or tap, this can matter more to you than nut width, because it is what your right hand navigates all day. It is also adjustable within limits on many bridges, which nut width is not without a new nut.

So which one do your hands actually notice?

Honest take, after a lot of necks: for most players, profile depth is the loudest signal, string spacing is second, and nut width is usually the quietest of the three. That order flips for some people. If you have wide fingers and you play a lot of open chords and fingerstyle up near the nut, a wider nut is a real, felt upgrade and you will chase it. If you play mostly lead, barre chords, and fast lines, you will probably notice the profile shape long before you notice a millimeter of width.

The trap to avoid is buying by the number. I have watched players sell a guitar they loved because a spec sheet told them the nut was "too narrow," then buy a wider-nut guitar that felt worse because its profile was wrong for them. The spec is a starting point, not a verdict. Your hands outvote the tape measure every time.

What this means when you're buying a used guitar

When you cannot play a guitar before buying, use all three numbers instead of fixating on one. Find the nut width, but also hunt down the neck depth at the 1st and 12th frets and the profile name if the maker lists one, because that is what will actually tell you whether it matches a neck you already like. "1 11/16-inch nut, .82-inch depth at the first fret, soft C" is a far more useful thing to shop with than "not too thin."

And remember what a setup can and can't move. A tech can adjust string spacing at the bridge, tweak string height, and cut a fresh nut to shift the outer strings a touch off the edge. FAQ

Is a wider nut better for big hands?

Often, yes, especially for open chords and fingerstyle where you want room between strings. But a wider nut with a shallow profile can still feel cramped in the palm, so check the profile depth too. Room between strings and room in your hand are two different things.

Does nut width change the tone?

Not in any way you will hear. Nut width is a playability and feel spec. It does not meaningfully change the sound of the guitar. If anything shifts your tone, it is the nut material and how well the slots are cut, not the width.

Can a guitar tech change the nut width?

Not really. The nut width is set by how wide the neck was carved. A tech can cut a new nut to nudge the outer strings slightly inward off the edge, and can adjust string spacing at the bridge, but the actual width of the wood is fixed unless you replace or reshape the neck.

My Gibson and my Fender both say 1 11/16 inch, so why do they feel so different?

Almost certainly the profile and the fingerboard radius. Same nut width, different neck shape and different curvature of the board, and your hand reads those instantly. That is the whole point: the width is only one of three numbers.
