On a top-loader, the string ends at the back lip of the bridge plate — it never enters the body. Check whether your bridge plate has the extra holes before you plan on it, though — not every plate is drilled both ways.

Buy the guitar, not the bridge. If a used Tele or hardtail speaks to you and it happens to be a top-loader, that is not a reason to pass — and it's not a bargaining chip worth much, either. If it's string-through, fine.
