Here's the short version, because I get asked this across the bench at least once a week: swapping vintage-style Klusons for a set of Grover Rotomatics will not make your guitar stay in tune better, and it almost certainly won't change your tone in any way you could pick out blindfolded. What it will do is give you a slightly finer tuning feel, add a noticeable chunk of weight to the headstock, and—on a lot of guitars—require permanently enlarging the holes in your peghead. Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on the guitar and what's bugging you about the current tuners.
I've had hundreds of Les Pauls, SGs, and 3-a-side imports on the bench with every combination of tuner you can imagine, including plenty that somebody "upgraded" and later wished they hadn't. So let's separate what a tuner swap really changes from the stuff people talk themselves into.
What people think tuners do vs. what they actually do
The single biggest myth I hear is that better tuners fix tuning stability. They don't—at least not the way people expect. A guitar that won't hold pitch is, nine times out of ten, binding somewhere else: a nut slot that's too tight or too rough, sloppy string winds around the post, a poorly cut saddle, or an unstable neck. The tuner just holds the string tension. Once it's holding, a $12 tuner and an $80 tuner hold it exactly the same. If your guitar drifts sharp or flat after a bend, chase the nut and your stringing technique before you spend a dime on tuners. What tuners genuinely affect is feel (the tuning ratio), weight, and fit. Those are the three things worth actually thinking about.
Gear ratio: 15:1 vs. 18:1
The tuning ratio is how many times you turn the button to get one full rotation of the string post. Vintage-style Kluson Deluxe tuners are typically 15:1. A standard Grover Rotomatic is 18:1. Higher ratio means each turn of the button moves the string a smaller amount, so you can dial in pitch a little more precisely—at the cost of a few more turns during a string change.
In practice? The gap between 15:1 and 18:1 is real but small. If you do a lot of fine tuning by ear, the Grovers feel a touch more surgical. If you like getting up to pitch quickly, the Klusons feel faster. Neither one is "better." I've watched players swear the 18:1 changed their life and others who found it fussy. This is a preference, not an upgrade.
Weight: the one that quietly matters
This is the factor almost nobody considers, and it's the one I'd flag first. A set of Kluson Deluxe tuners weighs roughly 5 ounces. A set of Grover Rotomatics comes in around 9.5 ounces—close to double. That extra mass sits at the very end of the longest lever on the instrument: the headstock.
On a heavy-bodied Les Paul, you'll probably never notice. But on an SG—a guitar that's already prone to neck dive because of its light body and forward strap button—bolting on Grovers can turn a mild lean into a genuine annoyance. The SG was designed around lightweight tuners for a reason. If you've got a guitar that already dives toward the floor, heavier tuners are a step in the wrong direction. I've fixed more than one neck-dive complaint simply by putting the light tuners back.
The hole in the headstock: why the swap is rarely reversible
Here's the part that turns a fun afternoon mod into a permanent decision. Vintage-style Klusons use small press-in bushings—the post hole is around 8mm. Grover Rotomatics use a larger threaded bushing that needs roughly a 10mm hole. To fit them, you have to ream the headstock holes bigger. That's not something you undo.
On top of that, the mounting screws rarely line up. Klusons usually use one small screw per tuner in one spot; Grovers put theirs somewhere else. So even if you change your mind later and reinstall vintage-style tuners, you're left with enlarged post holes and a scatter of empty screw holes that a previous configuration drilled. On a nice guitar, that's the kind of thing a careful buyer notices—and pays less for.
Worth noting: not every swap requires reaming. Some modern guitars already ship with the larger hex-bushing holes, and there are Kluson-footprint replacements (and Grover's own vintage-style line) designed to drop straight into existing holes with no drilling. If you want a smoother-feeling tuner without touching the wood, that direct-fit route is the one I steer people toward.
Does the tuner change your tone?
You'll read that heavier tuners add sustain or "focus" by putting more mass on the headstock, and that Grovers sound tighter while Klusons sound warmer and more open. Honestly? This is one of those claims that's easy to feel and very hard to prove. There's no solid, repeatable evidence that tuner mass meaningfully changes the sound of a solidbody electric, and the differences people report tend to evaporate under a blind test. I'm not going to tell you it's flatly impossible—guitars are full of small variables—but I would never spend money on tuners for tone, and I'd be skeptical of anyone who tells you to.
The resale angle
If your guitar has any collector value, factory-original tuners matter. Reaming the peghead and adding screw holes for aftermarket Grovers can knock real money off a vintage instrument—on genuinely collectible pieces, more than the tuners cost several times over. For a modern player-grade guitar it's less dramatic, but "all original" still sells faster and for a bit more. If you like the guitar and plan to keep it forever, do what makes you happy. If there's any chance you'll sell it, keep the original tuners in a bag in the case and think hard before you drill.
So, should you do it?
My honest take from the bench: swap to Grovers if you specifically want the 18:1 feel and your guitar already has the correct holes for them (no reaming), and if it's a heavier guitar where the added headstock weight won't cause dive. Skip the swap if your only complaint is tuning stability—that's a nut-and-setup problem—if the guitar is an SG or another neck-dive-prone design, if the job requires enlarging holes on a guitar you might sell, or if you're chasing a tone change. In most of those cases, a proper setup and a good nut will do far more for you than new tuners ever will.

Will Grover tuners help my guitar stay in tune?
Not by themselves. Tuning stability comes mostly from the nut, your string winding, and the overall setup. If the current tuners aren't slipping, new ones won't hold pitch any better. Fix the nut and stringing first.
