Why Does My Guitar Neck Dive — and Can You Actually Fix It?

If you have ever strapped on a guitar, taken your fretting hand off to grab a beer or turn a page, and watched the headstock swing toward the floor like it had somewhere to be, you have met neck dive. It is one of the most common complaints I hear across the bench, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Players assume a diving guitar is a heavy guitar, or a cheaply built one. Usually it is neither.

Here is the short version, and it is the thing to hold onto before we get into any of the fixes: neck dive is a balance problem, not a weight problem. A nine-pound Les Paul can hang dead level all day. A six-pound SG can pull your arm off the fretboard. What separates them is not the number on the scale — it is where the guitar's balance point sits relative to the strap button up by the neck.

What neck dive actually is

When a guitar hangs off a strap, it rotates until its center of mass settles at the lowest point it can reach. If the balance point of the whole instrument sits on the neck side of your front (upper) strap button, gravity has the leverage to swing the neck down. If it sits on the body side of that button, the neck stays where you put it. That is the entire mechanism. Everything else — tuner weight, body wood, headstock size — only matters insofar as it moves that balance point around. Two guitars can weigh exactly the same and behave completely differently depending on how that weight is distributed and, crucially, where the strap buttons are drilled.

Why it is a balance problem, not a weight problem

Think of the front strap button as a fulcrum. Whatever mass sits out past it toward the headstock is trying to rotate the neck down; whatever sits behind it, in the body, holds the neck up. On a well-balanced guitar most of the mass lives behind that button. On a diver, the button ends up on the wrong side of the balance point, or right on top of it, and there is nothing to counter the neck's leverage. That is also why a heavier strap or heavier strap locks does essentially nothing for dive — you are adding weight at the pivot, not changing where the balance point sits relative to it.

Which guitars are the usual suspects

Some designs are simply predisposed to it. The Gibson SG is the poster child: a thin, light mahogany body, a long neck that puts the headstock well out from your shoulder, and an upper strap button mounted at the neck heel where it does the least good. It is a fantastic-playing guitar and one of my favorites to have on the bench, but plenty of owners fight the dive their whole ownership.

The SG has company. Firebirds, Explorers, and a lot of smaller-bodied Flying V shapes all tend to be neck-heavy for the same reasons — light bodies, long necks, and strap buttons in awkward spots. On the bass side, the Thunderbird is famous for it. Notice the pattern: it is almost never the price or the build quality. A boutique Firebird-style guitar can dive just as hard as a budget one if the geometry is the same.

The fixes, ranked by how well they actually work

1. Relocate the front strap button (the real fix)

This is the one that actually solves the problem rather than masking it, and it is what I steer people toward first. Moving the upper strap button so it sits farther back — commonly onto the back of the neck heel, or up onto the top horn nearer the twelfth fret — shifts the pivot so the balance point ends up behind it. Done right, a diver becomes a guitar that hangs level with no strap gymnastics and no added weight.

The catch is that it means drilling a new hole. On a cheap guitar, no big deal. On a vintage or collectible instrument, an extra hole affects value, so that is a conversation to have before anyone picks up a drill. If you are not comfortable doing it, it is a ten-minute job for any competent tech. In my experience this single change fixes the large majority of dive complaints.

2. A grippy strap (treats the symptom, and that is fine)

A wide strap with a suede or rough leather backing increases friction against your shoulder and shirt, so even a guitar that wants to rotate simply cannot slide as easily. For a lot of players this is genuinely all they need, and it is the cheapest thing to try first. Be honest with yourself about what it is doing, though: it is not fixing the balance, it is fighting it with friction. The tell is that when the neck does start to go, it tends to take your shirt with it, and the guitar still feels neck-heavy the moment you stop bracing it with your hand.

3. Lighter tuners (a real but modest help)

Because the tuners sit way out at the end of the neck, they exert leverage out of proportion to their actual weight. Swapping a heavy set for lightweight or aluminum-post locking tuners genuinely moves the balance point back toward the body a little. On a borderline case it can be enough. On a committed diver it usually is not a cure by itself, but stacked with a grippy strap or a button move it helps. I would not buy a guitar expecting tuners alone to save it.

4. Add weight to the body (works, but you know the trade)

Adding mass inside the body — weighted strap buttons, or lead tape tucked into a control cavity or under a pickguard — pulls the balance point back toward the body end. It works. The downside is that you are making a light, comfortable guitar heavier to fix something you could have solved by moving a screw. I treat this as a last resort, for when relocating the button is off the table.

What I would actually do

If a customer hands me a diver, my order of operations is simple. Try a good suede strap first, because it costs almost nothing and sometimes ends the conversation right there. If the dive still bugs you, relocate the front strap button — that is the fix that makes the guitar behave for good. Consider lighter tuners only if you were upgrading the hardware anyway, and add weight only as a last resort. Three of those four cost very little, and none require you to sell the guitar and start over.

Buying a used neck-heavy guitar: what to check

None of this should scare you off a design you love — just go in with your eyes open. If you are shopping for an SG, Firebird, or anything with a small body and a long neck, hang it on a strap and take your hands off. If it dives, that is normal for the type and completely fixable; just factor a strap or a quick button relocation into your plans. And look closely at the neck heel and top horn for an extra or filled strap-button hole — it tells you a previous owner already fought this battle, which is useful to know and, on a vintage piece, relevant to value.

FAQ

Does a heavier guitar dive less?

Not necessarily. Dive is about where the balance point sits relative to the front strap button, not total weight. A heavy guitar with poor balance can still dive, and a light guitar with good strap-button placement will hang level.

Will strap locks fix neck dive?

No. Strap locks keep the strap from popping off the button, which is worth having, but they do nothing about balance. If anything the extra hardware adds a touch of weight right at the pivot, where it does not help.

Is relocating the strap button safe for the guitar?

On most guitars, yes — it is a routine modification and a competent tech can do it cleanly. The one place to pause is a vintage or collectible instrument, where any added hole affects value. On those, try a grippy strap and lighter tuners first.
