A Re-Glued Neck Joint on a Used Guitar: Dealbreaker, or Fine If It's Done Right?
Here's the short version, because I get asked this on the shop floor almost every week: a re-glued or re-set neck joint is not an automatic dealbreaker. A joint that's been broken and put back together properly can be every bit as reliable as a factory one, and sometimes stronger. What matters is not that it was repaired, but how. A clean, well-clamped re-glue by someone who knew what they were doing is a guitar I'll happily gig or resell. A mystery repair with a gap you can slip a business card into is one I walk away from. Let me show you how to tell the two apart.
First, make sure you know which 'neck repair' you're looking at
'Neck repair' gets used loosely, and the two most common ones are completely different animals. The famous one is the headstock break — the crack behind the nut, up in the peghead, that Gibsons are known for. This article is about the other one: the neck-to-body joint, down at the heel where the neck meets the body. On a set-neck guitar — a Les Paul, an SG, an ES-335, most Gibsons and Epiphones — the neck isn't bolted on. It's glued into a pocket in the body. When that joint fails, the neck lifts or cracks right where it enters the body, and fixing it means taking the neck back off, cleaning the joint, and gluing it back in. That's a 're-set' or 're-glue,' and it's the repair we're reading for today.
Why a set-neck joint fails in the first place
Two things are working against that joint every minute of its life. First, the strings. A set of tuned strings is pulling the neck forward with real, constant force, and all of that load lands on the glue joint. Second, geometry. On a set neck, the actual strength isn't the wood — it's the glue surface between the neck tenon and the body pocket. Starve that joint of glue, or use the wrong glue, and it becomes a slow-motion failure waiting for a knock to finish the job.

This is where the SG gets its scary reputation. The body is thin, the neck sits deep and high into it, and there's visibly less wood around the heel than on a chunky Les Paul, so people assume the joint is junk. In my experience that fear is overblown. The tenon on an SG actually reaches about as far into the body as a Les Paul's does, and from 1961 on Gibson added a small lip of body wood under the fingerboard extension for extra glue area. The strongest part of any of these joints is the glue surface, not the surrounding wood — so a properly glued SG heel is a lot tougher than the forum wisdom suggests. Most of the SG horror stories I see trace back to a drop, or to a previous 'repair' done with the wrong glue.
Can a re-glued joint actually be trusted?
Yes — with a caveat that's entirely about the person who did the work. Here's the thing most buyers don't realize: factory joints are often under-glued. When a good repair tech takes a neck off, cleans both surfaces, fits the neck angle, and glues it back with a proper adhesive and real clamping pressure, the result can be stronger than it left the factory. I've re-set necks that came back better than new.
The glue matters. A clean hide-glue or good aliphatic (yellow) glue joint, well clamped and cured, is solid and — in the case of hide glue — reversible, so the next tech down the line can heat it apart without a fight. What ruins a joint is the amateur version: white PVA craft glue, which stays slightly elastic and creeps under string tension until the neck slowly pulls forward again; polyurethane 'Gorilla' glue, which foams and expands and has no place in a structural instrument joint; or epoxy smeared in without proper alignment. A joint done with those isn't a repair, it's a time bomb. If you can find out what glue was used and who used it, that tells you most of what you need to know.
How to read the heel before you buy
You don't need a workbench to inspect a joint — you need eyes and about thirty seconds. Sight straight down the back of the neck to where it meets the body, in good light, and look at the seam.

Green lights: a tight, hairline glue line; finish that sits flush across the seam with no lip or step; the neck sitting dead straight in line with the body's centerline, so the strings run centered over the fretboard and the pickups.
Red flags: a visible gap at the joint (try to slide a slip of paper in — it shouldn't go); wood filler or putty packed around the seam; beads of dried glue squeeze-out; a step where the finish doesn't line up on the two halves; the neck cocked slightly to one side so the high or low E string drifts toward the fretboard edge; or action so high the bridge is bottomed out and you still can't get it playable. Also give the neck a very gentle wiggle where it enters the body — a joint that visibly flexes under light hand pressure is not glued, it's resting. If the seller has paperwork from the repair, ask for it. A receipt from a known shop is worth real money on a repaired guitar, because it turns a mystery into a known quantity.
What it should do to the price
This is where a repaired joint actually works in a player's favor. Even a clean, professional re-glue typically drops a guitar somewhere in the neighborhood of 25% to 50% under an untouched example, and a messy or visible repair pushes that steeper. Most of that hit is stigma, not function — in the collector world a repaired neck is a 'repaired guitar' forever, however well it plays. If you're a collector chasing an investment piece, that matters. If you're a player who wants a great instrument to actually play, that stigma is your discount. My honest take from the bench
I buy properly repaired set-neck guitars regularly, and they earn their keep. A neck that was broken once, glued right, and has held for years under tension has already proven itself. What I won't touch: a repair with visible gaps or the wrong glue, a joint that's clearly been broken and re-broken, or a 'fixed' guitar where the seller gets cagey the moment you ask what was done. Buy the repair, not the story — inspect the heel, get it in your hands, and judge it on condition. If it checks out, you're often getting a better guitar for less money than the nervous market wants you to believe.
