A Maxed-Out Tune-o-matic: How to Spot a Bad Neck Angle on a Used Les Paul

Here's the short version, because it's the single most useful thing I can tell you before you hand over money for a used Les Paul: look at how the bridge sits. If the tune-o-matic is screwed all the way down to the deck and the action is still too high, or it's cranked up so far it looks like it's on stilts, the problem usually isn't the bridge. It's the neck angle. And a bad neck angle on a glued-in Gibson neck is one of the few faults that a good setup can't touch.

I've had hundreds of these guitars on the bench, and neck angle is the one thing buyers almost never check. They'll sight the neck for a warp, count the frets for wear, pop the control cover to look at the pots — and miss that the whole bridge is out of adjustment range. It takes about a minute to check, and it can save you a very expensive surprise.

What "neck angle" actually means on a Les Paul

A Les Paul is a set-neck, carved-top guitar with a tall bridge. For the strings to clear the frets at a playable height and still land on a tune-o-matic — which is one of the tallest bridges out there — the neck has to be glued in at a slight backward tilt. On a typical carved-top Les Paul that angle is right around 4 degrees, and in the real world it varies from about 3 to 5 depending on the year and the individual instrument.

That built-in tilt is the whole reason the bridge and tailpiece are height-adjustable in the first place. A steeper angle wants a taller bridge; a shallower angle wants a lower one. Get the angle right and the bridge lives in the comfortable middle of its travel, with room to go up or down as the seasons and your string gauge change. Get it wrong and you run out of road in one direction — and that's exactly what you're inspecting for.

The 60-second bench test: a straightedge and your eyes

You don't need tools you can't fit in a gig bag. A short machinist's straightedge or even a stiff metal ruler is enough. Lay it flat on top of the frets, running down the center of the neck toward the bridge, and look at where the far end lands.

On a guitar with a healthy neck angle, the bottom edge of that straightedge comes down to the top of the bridge body — not the saddles, the body of the bridge itself. That tells you the neck is tilted enough that you can lower the action further if you want, and raise it if you need to. It's the "everything's fine here" reading.

Now the warning sign. If the straightedge passes clean over the top of the bridge with a visible gap — and the bridge is already sitting low — the neck angle is on the shallow side. The guitar is telling you it has run out of adjustment: it can't get the action down because the neck simply isn't tilted enough. In the opposite and rarer case, a very steep angle forces the bridge way up on its posts to meet the strings, which looks awkward and can get tippy. Either extreme is worth a hard second look and a lower offer.

The three things a bad angle actually causes

This isn't a cosmetic nitpick. A shallow neck angle shows up in the way the guitar plays and, eventually, in the way it holds together.

Action you can't lower. The most common complaint. The bridge is decked, the truss rod is fine, the frets are fine — and it still plays high. There's nowhere left to go because the geometry is fighting you.

A weak string break angle. When the bridge sits very low, the angle the strings make over the saddles flattens out, and in the extreme they start to touch the back edge of the bridge instead of passing cleanly to the tailpiece — which deadens things. Quick check: a slip of paper should pass between the strings and the back edge of the bridge. It's why players reach for tricks like top-wrapping — see our piece on top-wrapping versus raising the stopbar — but a workaround isn't the same as a correct angle.

Long-term stress on the top. When people fight a bad angle by cranking the stopbar hard onto the deck with the bridge set high, they pile downward force onto the bridge posts. Over years, that's part of how a tune-o-matic starts to sink or the top dishes around the posts — a slow failure, but a real reason to get the geometry right instead of brute-forcing it.

Why some guitars come this way

Most of the time a shallow angle is just factory variance — the neck was set a hair flat at the glue-up. The early-'50s goldtops are the famous example; a lot of them left the factory with neck sets shallow enough that players fought high action for decades. It also shows up on some SGs, which run a shallower angle by design and give you less margin to begin with.

The other cause is a repair that didn't go well — a neck reset or reglue, often after a headstock break, that ended up at the wrong angle. So if the bridge geometry looks off and there's evidence of past neck work, slow way down. Can a bad neck angle be fixed?

Yes — but here's where a Les Paul is different from a bolt-on, and where a lot of forum advice gets it wrong. On a Fender-style bolt-on neck, a shallow angle is a cheap afternoon fix: you shim the neck pocket and re-tilt the neck. A Les Paul has no pocket to shim. The neck is glued in. So the honest options are narrower:

A proper neck reset. The correct fix is to steam the neck loose, recut the heel to the right angle, and reglue it. Done well, it's invisible, stable, and genuinely improves the guitar; done poorly, it's a mess. It's neither quick nor cheap, and not every shop will take a set-neck reset — get it quoted locally rather than trusting a number off the internet, since cost varies a lot with the tech and how much the top and finish complicate the job.

Shaving the bridge — the compromise. On a milder case, a tech can lower the whole bridge by machining it down or fitting a lower-profile one, buying a little more range without opening the joint. It works, but it's a trade: you give up some break angle and some of the bridge's mass, so I treat it as a band-aid on a guitar that's close, not a cure for one that's badly off.

So — is it a dealbreaker?

It depends entirely on the price and the guitar. On a common used Les Paul that's a player, not a collectible, a shallow neck angle is a reason to walk unless the seller knocks off enough to cover a reset with room to spare — you're buying a guitar that needs surgery before it plays right. On something rare or personally special, a clean reset by a good luthier can be well worth doing, and a documented reset shouldn't scare you off; it can leave the guitar playing better than new.

What I won't do is pay full retail for a guitar whose bridge is already pinned at the bottom of its travel and hope it works out. That's the trap. Ninety seconds with a straightedge is all it takes to stay out of it. What's the correct neck angle on a Les Paul?
Right around 4 degrees on a carved-top Les Paul, with normal variation from roughly 3 to 5 degrees. There's no single magic number — what matters is that the angle lets the tune-o-matic sit in the usable middle of its adjustment range.

Can I just lower the bridge to fix high action?
Only if there's travel left. If the bridge is already decked and the action is still high, you've hit the limit of what a setup can do, and the neck angle is the real culprit. Lowering a bridge that's already at the bottom isn't an option.

Is a neck reset the same as fixing a broken headstock?
No. A headstock repair addresses a crack behind the nut; a neck reset changes the angle at the body joint. They're different jobs, though a botched headstock or neck repair can leave you with an angle problem, which is why the two are worth checking together.

Do all Les Pauls with a low bridge have a bad neck angle?
Not necessarily. A bridge can sit lowish and still be fine if there's adjustment left and the action is where you want it. The red flag is specifically a bridge that's bottomed out with action that's still too high — that combination is the tell.
