Is a Neck Shim a Red Flag on a Used Guitar?
Short answer, from someone who has had the neck off more used guitars than I can count: no. A shim in the neck pocket is not a red flag. It's a normal, reversible setup tool that techs and factories both use on purpose. When a buyer messages me in a mild panic because they pulled the neck off a bargain Strat and found a little wedge of card or wood in the pocket, my first question is never "what's wrong with it" — it's "how does it play?"
That said, there's a real distinction hiding in here. A shim done right is a non-event. A shim done wrong — a sliver jammed under the very end of the neck — can slowly deform a fingerboard. So the honest version of the answer is: the shim isn't the problem, the kind of shim job is. Here's how to tell the difference.
What a neck shim actually is
On any bolt-on guitar — Stratocaster, Telecaster, most of the affordable world — the neck sits in a routed pocket and is held by three or four screws through a plate on the back. A shim is just a thin piece of material set in that pocket to change the angle the neck sits at relative to the body. We're talking thin: anything from a business card to a slice of hardwood veneer, often a fraction of a degree of tilt.
The important part for a nervous used-guitar buyer: this is not a bodge invented by shade-tree tinkerers. Fender shims necks at the factory, and always has. If you've never seen one it's usually because it's tucked at the bottom of the pocket where you'd only find it with the neck off.
Why a tech reaches for a shim in the first place
The classic reason is high action you can't dial out. You lower the bridge saddles as far as they'll physically go, and the strings are still sitting too far off the frets. That means the neck is set at too shallow an angle for the bridge, and no amount of saddle adjustment will fix it — the saddles are already on the floor. Tilt the neck back a touch with a shim and that same saddle height suddenly gives you a comfortable action.
There are a couple of other legitimate reasons too. A neck pocket cut with a slightly shallow angle from the factory (common enough on production guitars) gets dialed in with a shim rather than re-routing the body. And after a fret level takes a little height off the frets, a shim can bring the geometry back into a good window. None of these are signs of a broken guitar. They're signs that somebody set the thing up properly instead of leaving you with a plank you can't play.
Fender literally built shimming into the guitar
If you still think a shim smells like a compromise, consider that Fender engineered a permanent one. In 1971, when CBS-era Fender moved the Stratocaster to a three-bolt neck plate, it introduced the Micro-Tilt system: a small Allen screw through the neck plate that presses on a plate in the neck heel, letting you increase the neck angle by turning a screw instead of slipping in a shim. The idea wasn't even originally Fender's — it traces back to Nathan Daniel at Danelectro.
The early three-bolt execution got a bad reputation (loose necks, quality-control gripes of the era), but the concept was sound, and Fender brought Micro-Tilt back on modern American-series instruments with tighter tolerances, where it works exactly as intended. The takeaway: adjusting neck angle is not a repair, it's a feature. A shim is just the manual version.
The one kind of shim job worth worrying about
Here's where I actually pay attention. There are two ways to shim a neck, and they age very differently.
A full-pocket shim spans the whole floor of the pocket, so the neck heel is supported end to end. Tapered or flat, it doesn't matter much — the point is there's no empty space under the heel. This is the right way, and it'll outlast the strings on the guitar.
A partial shim — a little sliver of card or a guitar-pick chunk jammed under the very back edge of the pocket — gives you the same angle in the moment, but it leaves an air gap under the front of the heel. Because the neck is bolted down hard, there's constant pressure trying to pull the unsupported part down into that gap. Over months and years, that can bow the heel and push a hump — a "ski jump" — up at the end of the fingerboard where it overhangs the body. That hump causes buzzing and choked notes on the upper frets, and fixing it properly can mean a fret level or worse.
What I actually check when a used guitar has been shimmed
You usually don't need to pull the neck to make a smart call. Do this instead:
Play the whole neck, especially frets 12 and up. Fretted notes that buzz out or choke as you climb toward the body are the fingerprint of a ski-jump hump. Then sight down the fingerboard from the headstock like you're aiming a rifle — you're looking for a distinct upturn in the last few frets over the body, separate from normal relief. A guitar that plays clean all the way up and holds its setup is a guitar that's shimmed fine, full stop. If a seller mentions a shim up front, I take that as a good sign: it means somebody who cared set it up.
One important contrast: all of this is bolt-on territory. On a set-neck guitar like a Gibson Les Paul or SG, the neck is glued in — you can't slip a shim in to correct the angle. When one of those has a neck angle that's gone too shallow (you'll see it as a bridge cranked all the way up and still-high action), the fix is a proper neck reset, which is real money and a real consideration. So the same symptom — high action, maxed-out bridge — is a shrug on a Strat and a serious talk on a Les Paul.
So should a shim change what you pay?
A cleanly shimmed, good-playing bolt-on: no discount owed. You're looking at a guitar that's been set up, not one that's been fixed. If anything I'd rather buy that than one that's never been touched. A guitar with a sliver shim and a visible ski jump: yes, factor in the cost of pulling the sliver, doing a full-contact shim, and possibly a fret level — and negotiate accordingly. Everything we take in gets set up on the bench before it goes into the guitars in stock collection, shim or no shim, so you're buying the way it plays, not a surprise.

Does a neck shim hurt tone or sustain?
In my experience, no. As long as the neck is seated solidly, a thin shim doesn't change the voice of the guitar. The persistent online claim that an air gap "sucks tone" doesn't survive an honest A/B — the downside of a bad shim is mechanical (a warped heel over time), not sonic.
Can a shim be removed?
Yes — it's completely reversible. But remember the shim was there to set the neck angle, so if you pull it, you'll need to re-establish that angle another way or your action goes back to being too high. Removing it isn't "undoing damage," it's changing a setup.
