Short answer: yes, they do something real — but probably not the thing you think, and for most players it’s not the first fix I’d reach for. A compensated nut or a Buzz Feiten setup can genuinely tighten up how your open chords sound in the first few frets. What they can’t do is make a guitar “perfectly in tune,” because no fretted guitar ever is. And nine times out of ten, the guitar that sent someone shopping for one of these systems just had a nut cut too high and a bridge that was never intonated properly.

I’ve had hundreds of these across the bench, and the pattern repeats: “my chords sound off no matter how carefully I tune,” the owner assumes it needs some exotic fix, and the culprit is a $0 adjustment. So let’s talk about what these systems really do, when they’re worth it, and what to check first.

Why your guitar is a little out of tune everywhere

Here’s the truth every tech lives with: a guitar with straight frets and a straight nut is built on equal temperament, which is a compromise. The frets are placed by a fixed formula so every key is equally usable — which also means every key is equally, slightly wrong. Piano tuners gave up on “perfect” intervals centuries ago and started stretch-tuning by ear for the same reason. Your guitar has an added twist: pressing a string down stretches it and raises its pitch, and how much depends on string gauge, action, and where you fret.

So when someone says “fix the intonation,” you’re never getting to zero — you’re choosing where to spend the error. That’s why fixing one chord can nudge another slightly worse.

Before you spend a dime: it’s usually the nut

If your open chords sound sour but everything past the 5th fret is fine, the odds are heavily on your nut being cut too high. When the nut slots sit too far above the first fret, you have to push the string down a long way to fret it — and all that extra travel stretches the string sharp. Open strings ring true, fretted notes in the first few frets go sharp, and the two fight each other in a first-position chord. It sounds exactly like an “intonation problem,” but your bridge saddles can’t fix it, because the error is happening up at the nut end.

The good news is this is bread-and-butter setup work. Lowering nut slots to the right height (I want the string clearing the first fret by a hair — check it by fretting at the third fret and looking at the gap over the first) pulls those sharp low-fret notes right back in line. It costs nothing but a set of nut files and patience, and it fixes the majority of “my chords sound off” complaints outright. Do this before you buy anything.

What a compensated nut actually does

Once the nut height is right and the bridge is properly intonated, some players still hear a faint sourness in open chords. That’s the equal-temperament error I mentioned, and that’s the gap a compensated nut is designed to close. Brands like Earvana are the common ones you’ll see.

The idea is simple. Instead of every string breaking over the nut at the same line, each string’s contact point is moved — shortened by a different, specific amount — to correct the sharpness that string picks up in the first few frets. The low strings, which go sharpest, get shifted the most.

Does it work? In my experience, and consistent with what most players report, yes — but in a specific, limited way. The improvement lives mostly in the first five to seven frets and is most obvious on open chords and on chords high up the neck that mix fretted and open strings. Past that, it does little, because up there your bridge saddles are already doing the intonation. A compensated nut also does its best work alongside properly set bridge saddles, not instead of them. If your saddles are wrong, fix those first — the nut can’t save a bad bridge setup.

The Buzz Feiten Tuning System

The Buzz Feiten Tuning System (BFTS) is the one people ask about the most, partly because of the players attached to it — Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and others have used it. It’s a bit more involved than a drop-in nut. It has two parts. First, the nut is relocated a small, prescribed distance toward the first fret (commonly described as roughly 2 mm) to knock out that low-fret sharpness. Second — and this is the part people forget — you tune the guitar using a specific tempered offset chart, not straight to a standard tuner. It’s a whole tuning formula, not just a piece of bone.

That second part matters if you’re buying a used guitar that already has BFTS installed. If you tune it “normally” with a regular tuner and it sounds a little odd, that’s expected — it was designed around those offsets. A Peterson strobe tuner (and some others) has the Buzz Feiten presets built in. It’s a real system with a real logic behind it, borrowed straight from how pianos are tempered.

My honest take from the bench

Here’s where I’ll plant a flag, because these topics get argued to death online and most of the heat comes from people talking past each other.

Both systems work. They are not snake oil. But they solve the last few percent of a problem, and you only enjoy that few percent if the first 90 — nut height, fret condition, bridge intonation, fresh strings — is already dialed in. I’ve watched players pay for an Earvana or a Feiten conversion when a proper setup and fresh strings would have gotten them most of the way there for a fraction of the cost. And because these systems choose where the equal-temperament error goes, a picky ear can occasionally find a chord they made slightly worse. That’s not a defect; it’s the physics.

Who should actually bother? Players who record a lot of open-chord layers where tiny sourness stacks up and becomes audible; players with great ears who’ve already got a perfectly set-up guitar and want that last increment; and folks who simply like tinkering. If that’s you, a compensated nut is a reasonable, reversible-ish upgrade. If you’re a gigging player whose guitar “just sounds off,” get a proper setup first. You’ll probably never think about compensated nuts again.

What I check first on a used guitar

When one of these comes across the bench with a tuning complaint, the order is always: fret condition, nut slot height, then bridge intonation. The bridge is the easy, visible part — on a Tune-o-matic each saddle moves independently so every string’s length can be set so the 12th-fret harmonic matches the fretted note.

FAQ

Will a compensated nut fix a guitar that won’t stay in tune?

No. Tuning stability is a different problem — that’s usually strings binding in the nut slots, sloppy string winds, or worn tuners. A compensated nut addresses intonation (whether fretted notes are in tune with each other), not whether the guitar drifts flat while you play.

Can I install an Earvana or Feiten nut myself?

A drop-in compensated nut is doable if you’re comfortable removing and seating a nut and dressing the slots. The Buzz Feiten system is more of a full conversion (nut relocation plus the offset tuning) and is usually worth having a tech do. Either way, get the rest of the setup right first or you won’t hear the benefit.

If my guitar is in tune at the open string and the 12th fret, why do chords still sound off?

Because those two points can be perfect while the first few frets run sharp — classic sign of a nut cut too high. Open/12th-fret intonation is set at the bridge; low-fret sharpness lives at the nut. Different fix.

Do the pros really use these?

Some do — Buzz Feiten setups show up on plenty of touring instruments. But remember those guitars are also getting flawless fret work, fresh strings, and meticulous setups. The system is the cherry on top, not the cake.
