Why Does My Les Paul (or SG) Lose Volume in the Middle Position?

Short version: on almost every two-humbucker Gibson — Les Paul, SG, ES-335, the whole family — the middle position should be a touch quieter and a little darker than either pickup on its own. That is how the circuit works, not a sign your guitar is broken. And if turning one volume knob all the way down makes the entire guitar go silent in that middle notch, that is also completely normal. Let me walk through why, because once you understand it you stop chasing a “problem” that was never a problem — and you learn a couple of tricks that make the middle position genuinely useful.
I’ve had hundreds of these on the bench, and this is one of the most common “is my guitar faulty?” questions I get. The answer is usually no.
First, sort out which “quiet middle” you actually have
Two different complaints get lumped together, and they have different explanations:
- “The middle position is a bit quieter and darker than the bridge or neck alone.” That is the normal, built-in behavior of two pickups running together. Nothing to fix.
- “If I roll one volume to zero in the middle, the whole guitar cuts out.” Also normal on standard Gibson wiring — and there’s a well-known mod if you don’t like it.
Only a third scenario is an actual fault, and I’ll get to how to spot it at the end. Let’s take the two normal ones in order.
Why both pickups together give you less output, not more
It feels backwards. Two pickups on ought to be louder than one, right? But that isn’t how they combine. When the switch is in the middle, both volume controls are wired to the same point, so the two pickups sit in parallel and load each other down. Parallel loading drops the overall output a little and shaves off some high end — which is exactly the warmer, slightly softer voice players either love or complain about.
On top of that, the two pickups are sensing the string in two different places. The neck and bridge are hearing slightly different parts of the same vibrating string, so when you sum them, some frequencies reinforce and others partially cancel. Even with everything perfectly in phase, that partial cancellation is why the middle position has its own hollow, vocal character instead of just being “neck plus bridge, louder.”
So the drop is real, it’s designed in, and honestly it’s a feature. That in-between tone is what a lot of great clean and blues sounds are built on.
The “turn one volume down and everything dies” thing
Here’s the one that convinces people their wiring is bad. In the middle position, back either volume knob down to zero and the guitar goes completely silent — not just that one pickup. New owners assume a cold solder joint or a dying pot. It’s neither.
In standard Gibson wiring, each volume pot sends its output from the wiper (the center lug) to the switch. When you turn a volume to zero, that wiper connects straight to ground. In the middle position both wipers meet at the same node, so grounding one of them grounds the shared output — and both pickups go quiet. It’s the direct consequence of the shared-node wiring in the diagram above.
One useful thing falls out of this: because the two volumes interact, you don’t have to run both on 10. Back one off a notch or two relative to the other and the middle position often opens back up — more level, a little more clarity, and you can dial in a blend that’s neither straight-neck nor straight-bridge. Many players find that a slightly uneven setting is the sweet spot, not both maxed.
If you actually want independent volumes: the mod
If the “one knob kills everything” behavior drives you up the wall — say you like to preset the neck pickup low for a volume-knob swell — there’s a decades-old fix called the independent-volume mod. It rewires each volume pot so the controls stop grounding each other.
The whole change is swapping two connections on each volume pot: the pickup lead goes to the center wiper lug, and the output to the switch comes off an outer lug. Wired that way, turning a volume to zero grounds only that pickup, and the other keeps playing. Now the two controls behave independently in the middle position.
It’s a real fix, but it isn’t free. Moving those connections changes how the volume taper feels and rolls off a bit of top end — which is exactly why Gibson never shipped it as stock. If you want it done, it’s a fifteen-minute job for anyone comfortable with a soldering iron, or something any tech can do while your guitar’s already open for a setup. My honest take: try balancing your volumes first. A lot of people who think they want the mod are happy once they stop running both knobs on 10.
A quick word on 50s vs. modern wiring
People sometimes blame the middle-position behavior on “50s wiring” versus “modern wiring.” That’s a different thing. 50s vs. modern only refers to where the tone capacitor connects relative to the volume pot — it changes how treble behaves as you roll the volume down. It does not change the one-volume-kills-the-middle behavior. Both wiring styles do that, because both share the output node at the switch. So if someone tells you a rewire to 50s wiring will “fix” your quiet middle, it won’t.
When it is actually a fault
There is a version of this that’s a genuine problem, and it usually shows up right after a pickup swap. If the middle position is dramatically thin, weak, and honky — not just a little softer, but obviously wrong and almost nasal — your pickups may be out of phase with each other. That happens when a replacement pickup’s wiring or magnet polarity doesn’t match the other one. In phase, the middle is warm and full; out of phase, it’s hollowed-out and quiet in a way you’ll immediately dislike.
The tell: if the guitar sounded fine in the middle before you changed a pickup and now sounds gutted, it’s almost certainly a phase mismatch, which is a wiring correction (flipping the leads on one pickup, or matching magnet polarity), not a defect. If it’s always been this way from the factory, it’s just the normal behavior we’ve been talking about.
