Here's the short version, because you probably want to plug in and play tonight: when a guitar crackles, drops out, or goes dead as you flip the pickup selector, the pickups themselves are almost never the problem. Ninety percent of the time it's a dirty toggle switch or a loose output jack — two cheap, mechanical parts that live between your pickups and your amp. I've had hundreds of guitars on the bench with exactly this complaint, and I can count on one hand the times a pickup was actually to blame.
So before you start shopping for replacement humbuckers, let's walk the signal path and figure out which part is actually failing.
First, is that pop even a problem?
Let's clear this up, because it saves a lot of needless worry. A single, clean pop or click the instant you move the switch is usually normal. Most guitar switches are "break-before-make," meaning they open one circuit a split second before they close the next — for that moment the signal path is open, exactly like unplugging your cable without muting the amp. The small pop that follows is a capacitance discharge, and it's louder when you're switching between pickups of noticeably different output (say a hot bridge humbucker and a lower-output neck). That's physics, not a fault.
What is not normal:
- Crackling, static, or a "frying bacon" sound when you wiggle the switch
- The signal cutting in and out, or dropping to nothing, in a switch position that used to work
- One pickup position going completely dead and staying dead
- Volume that fades or surges when you move the cable near the guitar
Those are the symptoms worth chasing. Here's how to tell them apart.
Trouble spot #1: the toggle switch
The pickup selector is a set of small metal contacts that physically touch as you move the switch. Over years of playing — and especially if the guitar has lived somewhere humid — those contacts pick up oxidation and grime. The signal has to jump across that gunk, and the result is crackle, intermittent dropouts, or a position that only works if you hold the switch just so.
The telltale sign: the noise happens when you flip the switch, and a particular position is flaky. If you can make it crackle by lightly jiggling the toggle, you've found your culprit.
The first fix is free. Work the switch hard through all its positions 15 or 20 times. That mechanical wiping action alone often scrapes enough oxidation off the contacts to bring a scratchy switch back to life, at least for a while. It's the single most underrated fix in the building.
If that only helps for a day or two, the contacts want cleaning — and this is where people go wrong.
Use a proper electronics contact cleaner — DeoxIT D5 is the shop standard — sprayed sparingly onto the switch, then work the toggle back and forth 15 to 20 times to spread it and wipe the contacts. Do not reach for standard WD-40. The regular stuff is a water displacer, not a contact cleaner; it leaves an oily film that attracts dust, and a few months later your switch is worse than when you started. (WD-40 does make a separate Specialist Contact Cleaner, which is fine — it's the everyday can you want to avoid.)

Trouble spot #2: the output jack
If the crackle or cut-out happens when you move the cable — lean back, take a step, or wiggle the plug where it enters the guitar — the switch is off the hook and your output jack is the suspect. The jack takes more mechanical abuse than any other part of your electronics: every plug-in, every yank, every time the cable snags on something. Two things go wrong.
The first is dead simple. The nut that holds the jack in place backs off with use, the whole jack starts to spin, and the wires soldered to it flex until the contact gets flaky. Half the "my guitar keeps cutting out" cases I see are cured by snugging that nut back down (hold the jack still with a spanner or your fingers so the wires don't twist while you tighten). The second is a tired contact: the little metal tongue inside the jack that grips your plug's tip loses its spring over time, so the connection comes and goes. That one usually means a new jack — a couple of dollars in parts.
When one position is just... dead
Different symptom, different cause. If a single switch position produces no sound at all and never comes back — no crackle, no intermittent life, just silence — you're most likely looking at a broken wire or a cold solder joint where a pickup lead meets the switch. Solder joints can look perfectly fine and still have failed internally, which is why this one usually needs a tech with an iron and a few minutes at the bench rather than a can of spray.
A word on Les Pauls specifically
If you own a Les Paul, an SG, or any guitar with the toggle mounted up on the shoulder — away from the volume and tone knobs — you have a little extra to think about. That remote switch is connected to the rest of the electronics by long lead wires running through a channel in the body. More wire and a second solder location simply means more places for a connection to go intermittent. It's not a design flaw, just the nature of that layout. When a Les Paul goes crackly in one position, I check the toggle and its lead wires first; on a Strat or Tele, where the blade switch sits right in the control cavity with everything else, the odds shift back toward the jack.
What you can fix yourself — and what you shouldn't
Working the switch, tightening a loose jack nut, and a careful shot of contact cleaner are all reasonable at home with a screwdriver and ten minutes. If you're comfortable with a soldering iron, replacing a worn jack or reflowing a joint is a beginner-friendly repair. What I'd hand to a tech: anything that keeps coming back after cleaning, a switch that needs replacing, or any guitar where you're not confident which part is at fault. A good setup tech will diagnose and fix a scratchy switch or dead position in well under an hour, and you'll leave knowing it's actually solved rather than temporarily quieted.
Buying a used guitar? Test this before you pay
This is exactly the kind of fault that's easy to miss in a quick showroom noodle and easy to catch if you know the move. Plug in and play through every switch position, then — while a note rings — gently wiggle the toggle and jiggle the cable at the jack. Crackle or dropout tells you there's electronics work in that guitar's near future. It's rarely a dealbreaker (these are cheap fixes), but it's absolutely a bargaining chip. FAQ
Is it bad to leave a crackling switch alone?
It won't damage your guitar or amp, so there's no emergency. But oxidation and a loosening jack only get worse with time, and a switch that crackles today can drop out mid-set next month. It's a ten-minute job now versus a dead pickup position at the worst possible moment.
Can I just spray contact cleaner into the switch through the pickguard or top?
Sometimes there's a gap you can hit, but you'll do a far better job with the control cavity or switch cover off so you can aim at the actual contacts and then work the switch to spread the cleaner. Take the two minutes to open it up — you'll use less spray and get a cleaner result.
My guitar only crackles at high volume or high gain. Same problem?
Usually, yes — more gain just makes a marginal contact easier to hear. Chase the same two suspects, the switch and the jack. If the noise is a steady hum or buzz rather than a crackle tied to moving the switch or cable, that's a grounding or shielding question, which is a different write-up.
Should I upgrade to a "better" switch while I'm in there?
If a switch has genuinely failed, replacing it with a quality part (a Switchcraft toggle on a Les Paul-style guitar, for example) is money well spent. But a good switch that's simply dirty doesn't need upgrading — it needs cleaning. Don't let a parts-swap upsell talk you out of the free fix first.
