It is a resonance issue baked into that particular neck and body, not a bad setup, not a worn fret, and not something a new set of pickups will cure. I have had this conversation across the bench more times than I can count, usually with someone who has already spent money chasing it in the wrong direction.

Let me walk through what is actually happening, how to tell a dead spot apart from problems you can fix, where these notes tend to hide, and what genuinely moves the needle.

What a dead spot actually is

Every guitar neck is a piece of wood with its own natural resonant frequency, the same way a tuning fork or a wine glass has one. When you play a note whose pitch happens to line up with the neck's resonance, the neck starts vibrating sympathetically and quietly soaks up the string's energy. The string has less energy left to keep ringing, so the note collapses early. It still sounds the correct pitch on the way down; it just does not hang around.

How to tell a dead spot from a problem you can actually fix

Before you resign yourself to a dead spot, rule out the things that masquerade as one, because those are fixable and worth catching.

A dead or worn fret is the big one. If a note frets out, buzzes badly, or chokes when you bend, that is usually a high or worn fret, and a fret level or a refret solves it. The tell is that a bad fret misbehaves in an ugly, rattly way, while a true dead spot sounds clean but short. A nut or setup problem can also mimic weak notes, especially if a string is binding or sitting badly. And a note that goes sharp or thin when you fret it is an intonation or fret-height issue, not resonance.

The simplest diagnostic I use: play the suspect note, then play the notes a fret above and below it on the same string. If only that one spot dies early while its neighbors ring out, and it sounds clean the whole way, you have found a dead spot. It is the instrument, not your technique.

Where dead spots tend to hide

There is no universal law here, but there are strong tendencies. The most notorious location, and the one players complain about most online, is the upper-middle of the neck on the G string, right around the fifth to seventh fret. That region seems to line up with the resonant frequency of a lot of longer-scale necks. You will also occasionally find one on the high E up near the top of the fingerboard.

In my experience, this is more of a bolt-on, Fender-scale conversation than a set-neck Gibson one. That is not a hard rule, and it is genuinely debated. Plenty of players insist their Les Paul has a dead spot, and plenty of Strats have none at all. But the classic seventh-fret-G complaint shows up over and over on long-scale bolt-on instruments, so if you are auditioning that style of guitar, it is worth a specific check.

What actually fixes a dead spot, and what doesn't

Here is where I try to be straight with people. You usually cannot delete a dead spot. What you can sometimes do is move it by changing the neck's resonant frequency, and if you move it to a note you rarely play, it effectively disappears from your playing.

The most common approach is adding mass at the headstock. Clamp-on weights sold for exactly this purpose, or simply swapping to heavier tuners, shift the frequency at which the neck wants to resonate. Sometimes that nudges the dead spot up or down the neck out of the way. Sometimes it barely does anything. Results are genuinely inconsistent, and anyone who promises you a guaranteed fix has not spent enough time with these.

Adding mass at the headstock, whether a clamp-on weight or heavier tuners, is the usual attempt at shifting a dead spot. It moves the resonance; it does not erase it.

On instruments with a big metal tremolo block, swapping a thin zinc block for a heavier brass one can also shift things around and is a popular reported fix. Beyond that, the honest truth is that some necks just have a dead spot, and no bolt-on gadget reliably removes it. What will not help: a setup, a fret level, new strings, or new pickups. Those are all worth doing for other reasons, but none of them addresses resonance.

So should a dead spot stop you from buying a guitar?

Usually not, but it belongs on your checklist. If you are buying used, play chromatically up each string and listen for a note that clearly dies before its neighbors. A mild dead spot on a note you rarely hit is a shrug. A pronounced one right where you live on the neck is a real annoyance, and it is fair to factor that into what you offer. It is also exactly the kind of thing that is hard to catch from photos, which is one more reason to buy from someone who has actually had the instrument in hand.
