Why Does My Guitar Neck Dive — And How Do I Actually Fix It?

Here's the short version, because it's the part most people get wrong: neck dive is not a defect, and it is not a sign your guitar is cheap or badly built. It's a balance problem. When you take your fretting hand off the neck and the headstock swings down toward the floor on its own, the guitar's weight is simply sitting in the wrong place relative to where your strap holds it. Understand that one idea and every "fix" out there suddenly makes sense — including the ones that don't work.
The guitars that dive are almost always the same handful of designs: thin, light-bodied instruments with a full-length neck and a good chunk of hardware up at the headstock. The Gibson SG is the poster child, but plenty of others do it too. So let's talk about what's really going on, and then walk through the fixes in the order I'd actually try them.
What neck dive actually is
Think of your strapped-on guitar as a see-saw. The two strap buttons are the points it hangs from; somewhere along the instrument is its center of mass — the single balance point where all the weight effectively acts. If that balance point sits between your two strap buttons, the guitar hangs level and stays put when you let go. If the balance point sits out past the front button, toward the neck, gravity does what gravity does: it rotates the whole guitar around that button and the headstock drops.
That's the entire phenomenon. Neck dive happens when the center of mass ends up forward of the front strap button, so the neck end is "heavier" than the tail end from the strap's point of view.
Why some guitars do it and others don't
Two things push the balance point toward the neck: a light body and a heavy neck-and-headstock. Most divers have both.
The SG is the classic example because Gibson carved the body thin and light — that's what makes it such a joy to wear for a three-hour gig — but paired it with a full 24.75" mahogany neck and a headstock loaded with tuners. On top of that, the traditional front strap button lives on the back of the neck heel, up around where the neck joins the body. Put the pivot that far up the instrument and you've almost guaranteed the mass will sit ahead of it. Gibson clearly knows this: on some higher-spec SGs they moved the front button back onto the upper horn, which is exactly the fix players have been doing themselves for decades.
Compare that to a Les Paul. Same scale, similar headstock, but the body is thick, dense, and heavy — often nine pounds or more. All that mass down in the body drags the balance point back between the strap buttons, so a Les Paul basically never dives. It's the tradeoff nobody mentions when they gripe about a heavy Les Paul: the weight you're carrying is also the weight keeping it balanced. Thinline semi-hollows, some offsets, and lightweight satin-finished guitars can dive for the same reason the SG does — not enough body to counter the neck.
The fixes, in the order I'd try them
1. Start with the strap, because it's free
A grippy strap doesn't change your guitar's balance at all — but it changes whether the dive actually bothers you. A slick nylon or thin leather strap slides on your shoulder, so the guitar creeps and the neck sags. A wide suede or rough-underside leather strap grabs your shoulder and holds position. For a mild diver, that friction alone can be the difference between "annoying" and "never think about it." Just be honest about what it's doing: it's managing the symptom, not moving the balance point.
2. Take weight off the headstock
Because the headstock is at the far end of the lever, weight up there has an outsized effect. Swapping heavy stock tuners for a set of lightweight tuners removes mass exactly where it does the most damage. On a genuine diver this is a real, noticeable improvement, and you get better tuning stability as a bonus. It won't fully cure a bad case on its own, but combined with a grippy strap it's often enough. (Worth noting: some "upgrade" locking tuners are actually heavier than vintage-style ones, which can make dive slightly worse — check the weight before you buy.)
3. Move the front strap button — the near-permanent cure
This is the fix that addresses the actual physics: relocate the front strap button from the neck heel to the back of the upper horn. Moving the pivot back toward the guitar's center of mass brings the balance point between your two buttons, and the neck stops falling. Done right, it solves the vast majority of neck-dive cases outright.
The catch is it means drilling a new hole in the body, so it's not reversible and it's not something to rush. Before you commit, test the position: tape a strap button or just hold the strap end at different spots on the upper horn and find where the guitar hangs level, supporting the whole instrument as you experiment. Once you know the right spot, it's a quick job — but if you're at all unsure about drilling into a guitar you care about, this is exactly the kind of thing to hand to a tech. On a vintage or collectible instrument, I'd think hard before putting a new hole in it at all; a strap-and-tuner approach keeps it original.
4. Counterweights and gadgets
Strap systems, weighted end pins, and clamp-on counterweights are sold specifically for this. They can work — adding mass at the tail end shifts the balance the same way moving the button does — but you're adding overall weight to a guitar you probably bought because it was light. I treat these as a fallback for when someone won't drill and the strap-plus-tuner route wasn't enough.
What won't fix it
A heavier strap helps with grip, not balance, so don't expect a wide strap alone to cure a serious diver. Tightening the strap or choking up on it just holds the guitar against your body — the moment you relax, it dives again. And no setup work — frets, nut, truss rod, action — has anything to do with neck dive; that's all string-side, while dive is purely about mass and where it hangs. If a shop tells you a "setup" will fix your neck dive, they're either misunderstanding you or hoping you'll pay for something unrelated.
Should neck dive stop you buying a guitar?
Not on its own. Every SG I've mentioned here is still one of the best-feeling, best-sounding guitars in its price range, and a diving neck is a solved problem — usually with a strap swap, sometimes with a modest set of lighter tuners, occasionally with a single relocated screw. If you're shopping used and you find a great light-bodied guitar that dives a little, factor in a grippy strap and move on. It shouldn't cost you the guitar.
