Why Does My Guitar Hum When I Plug In? (And When It’s Actually a Problem)
Here is the short version, because you probably came here mid-practice with a buzzing amp: most guitar hum is completely normal, and it is not a defect. If your hum drops noticeably the moment you touch the strings, your guitar is working exactly as designed. The noise you are hearing is your pickups picking up the electrical mess in your room, not a fault in the instrument.
The trouble is that normal hum and broken-ground hum sound nearly identical through a cranked amp. So players either panic over nothing, or live with a real fault for years because they assumed all guitars do that. There is a thirty-second test that sorts it out, and I run it on every guitar that crosses my bench.
The thirty-second touch test
Plug in. Turn up to the volume you actually play at. Take your hands completely off the guitar and listen. Then touch the strings or the bridge and listen again to what changes.

Three things can happen, and each one points somewhere different:
The hum drops a lot. The normal, healthy result. Nothing is wrong with your guitar — go fix your room instead.
The hum gets louder, or nothing changes at all. Now I am interested. This usually means the ground path is broken somewhere, and it is worth getting looked at.
Nothing changes, and the amp hums just as much with no guitar plugged in. Your guitar is innocent — look at the amp, the outlet, or the room.
Why single coils hum in the first place
A pickup is a coil of wire — thousands of turns of it. That is a wonderfully sensitive antenna, and it does not know the difference between a vibrating string and the 60 Hz field radiating off the wiring in your walls. (50 Hz if you are outside North America.) A single coil picks up both and sends them down the cable together.

Humbuckers solve this with a genuinely clever trick: two coils, wound in opposite directions, with magnets of opposite polarity. The string signal stays in phase and survives. The interference hits both coils identically and cancels itself out. That is the whole idea, and it is why the same room that makes a Strat buzz can be dead quiet with a Les Paul.
P-90s, for the record, are single coils. Big, loud, wonderful single coils that hum like single coils. If someone tells you a P-90 guitar should be silent, they have not spent much time with P-90s.
You will also notice the hum changes as you turn. That is not your imagination — you are rotating the coil relative to the interference field. Players have been quietly turning away from the amp for seventy years, and it still works.
What the ground wire actually does
Inside the guitar there is a bare wire running from the bridge or the tailpiece stud into the control cavity, where it joins everything else at ground. When you touch the strings, that wire connects you to ground.

This matters more than people realise, because a human body is a very effective antenna. Touch a properly grounded set of strings and the mains hum you are collecting drains away to ground instead of coupling into your pickups. Stop being an antenna, and the hum drops.
Break that wire and you get the opposite. You are still an antenna, but now you are an antenna touching metal that is wired directly to your pickups. Hence the classic symptom: hum that gets worse when you touch the strings. That is the single most useful diagnostic in the whole business.
This fails so often because on many guitars the ground wire is not soldered at the bridge end at all. It is pinched under a bridge post or trapped beneath the tremolo claw, held by friction. Pull the bridge for setup work, put it back without checking, and the connection is gone. I have found lifted ground wires on guitars fresh back from a “professional setup” more than once. The good news: it is fifteen minutes and a soldering iron, not a rewire.
The shielding question, honestly
Copper foil in the control cavity is one of the most oversold upgrades in the guitar world — not because it does nothing, but because people expect the wrong thing from it.
Shielding builds a Faraday cage around your electronics, and that is genuinely effective against electrostatic and radio-frequency interference: dimmer buzz, computer monitors, LED lighting, radio stations bleeding into your signal. If your noise is a bright hash rather than a low hum, shielding may well be the answer.
What it will not do is cancel low-frequency magnetic hum. The 60-cycle hum a single coil pulls out of the air passes through copper foil as though it were not there — the pickup coil sits outside the shielded cavity, and magnetic fields at that frequency are not stopped by thin conductive sheet anyway. Shield a Strat properly and it will still hum. It will just hum more cleanly. Worth doing if you are chasing buzz and fizz; not worth doing if you expected humbucker silence.
Things that are almost never the guitar
Before blaming the instrument, walk the room. The usual culprits are light dimmers (the worst offender by a distance), LED and fluorescent fixtures, laptop chargers, and cheap daisy-chain pedal supplies. Try a different outlet on a different circuit, and unplug things one at a time. Tedious, but it works.
One thing I will not be diplomatic about
If someone tells you to quiet your hum with a three-to-two prong adapter — a “cheater plug” — ignore them. It works, in the sense that it breaks a ground loop and reduces noise. It also disconnects the safety earth on your amp chassis, which is the thing standing between you and a fault current looking for a path to ground. On stage, holding a grounded microphone, that path can be you.
If your amp has a two-prong cord, have a tech fit a proper three-prong one. If you have a ground loop between amp and pedalboard, solve it with an isolation transformer built for the job. And if you ever feel a tingle from the strings or a microphone, stop playing and get the amp checked that week.
What I check before a guitar goes out
Every guitar that goes up on the site gets the touch test, and if it fails, the control cavity comes off. I check continuity from the strings to the jack sleeve, I look at the pot-back solder joints — cold joints on pot casings are the second most common cause after a lifted bridge wire — and I make sure the jack ground lug is solid, since a loose output jack produces crackling and hum together.

FAQ
Is it normal for my guitar to hum when I am not touching the strings?
Yes, on single coils and P-90s that is entirely normal. Your body is acting as an antenna and your pickups are picking up mains hum from the room. If the hum drops when you touch the strings or bridge, your guitar is fine.
Why does my guitar hum more when I touch the strings?
That is the reverse of normal, and it usually means the bridge ground wire has come loose or was never connected. Without a ground path, touching the strings connects your body — antenna and all — straight to your pickup circuit. It is a common and inexpensive repair.
Will shielding my guitar stop the hum?
Partly. Copper foil or conductive paint tied to ground cuts electrostatic and radio interference: dimmer buzz, monitor hash, radio bleed. It does not stop the low-frequency magnetic hum that single coils pull in, so a shielded Strat will still hum, just more cleanly.
