Why Does My Guitar Have Sharp Fret Ends? (And What Actually Fixes Them)

Short version: those sharp little edges snagging your hand as you slide up the neck almost never mean the frets are worn out or that the guitar was built badly. In the overwhelming majority of cases the fingerboard has shrunk in dry air, and the metal frets — which don't shrink — are now hanging a hair past the edge of the wood. Players call it fret sprout. I see it come across the bench every winter, on brand-new guitars and fifty-year-old ones alike, and the fix is usually quick and cheap.
Here's what's actually happening, whether you can reverse it yourself, and what it should (and shouldn't) tell you when you're buying a used guitar.
What "sharp fret ends" actually are
A fret is a strip of nickel-silver wire pressed into a slot across the fingerboard. Wood moves with moisture; metal essentially doesn't. When the air gets dry, the fingerboard gives up moisture and contracts across its width. The frets stay exactly as long as the day they were installed. So the ends that used to sit flush with the edge of the board now poke out past it, leaving a tiny sharp shelf you can feel — and sometimes see — running down both sides of the neck.
That's the whole mechanism. It isn't wear, it isn't a defect, and it isn't the frets "lifting." It's wood doing what wood does.
Why it happens — humidity, not workmanship
The trigger is low relative humidity. The most common culprit is indoor heating in winter: furnaces and radiators can drag a room down into the 20–30% range, and a guitar left out on a stand in that air will dry out over days and weeks. The other classic case is a guitar that was built or stored somewhere humid and then shipped to a dry climate — a lot of "the frets got sharp right after it arrived" stories are exactly this.
The number worth remembering is 40–50% relative humidity. That's the range luthiers and every major manufacturer target, because it's roughly where a guitar's wood was when it was built and finished. Keep an instrument there and fret sprout basically never shows up. Let it swing well below that and it can appear on almost anything.
Why some boards sprout and others don't
Not every fingerboard reacts the same way, and this trips people up. The board's material and finish matter:
- Ebony is the most reactive. It's dense but notoriously moody with humidity — it'll sprout frets readily and, in genuinely dry conditions, is the wood most prone to hairline cracking. If you own an ebony-board guitar, you are the person who most needs a humidifier.
- Rosewood sits in the middle. It has natural oils that slow moisture exchange, so it's more stable than bare ebony, but it's still an open-pore, unfinished wood and it absolutely sprouts in dry air.
- Finished maple is the most stable of the three — not because maple is magic, but because a maple board almost always wears a coat of finish that seals the wood and slows how fast it trades moisture with the room. It can still move; it just resists the quick swings better.
Can you fix it just by rehumidifying?
Sometimes — and it's always worth trying first, because it costs almost nothing. If the shrinkage is recent and mild, putting the guitar back into 40–50% humidity can swell the board back toward its original width and quietly swallow the fret ends again. Seal it in its case with a case or soundhole humidifier, give it a week or two, and re-check.
Be realistic, though. If a board has been dry for years, the wood may have taken a set, and rehumidifying often only takes the edge off rather than fully curing it. So rehumidify first because it's free and it can genuinely solve a fresh case — but don't be surprised if a long-neglected neck still needs a file afterward. Either way, fix the environment, or the sprout just comes back next winter.
The permanent fix: a fret-end dress
When the wood won't cooperate, the real fix is mechanical and it's a small job: dressing the fret ends. A tech files the protruding ends flush with the edge of the board, re-cuts the bevel, then rounds and polishes each end so it's smooth under your hand. Done well, you'd never know it happened except that the neck feels great again.
One thing worth being clear about, because people mix these up: a fret-end dress is not a full fret level, and it's not a refret. It removes almost no material from the playing surface — it's only tidying the sides. It doesn't change your action or shorten the life of your frets in any meaningful way. It's one of the cheapest, lowest-risk pieces of fretwork there is, and it's very much doable by a competent DIYer with the right file and a patient hand, though a good tech will knock it out quickly.
What sharp fret ends tell you on a used guitar
This is where it matters for buyers, so let me be straight about it. Fret sprout on a used guitar is not a red flag about the guitar's quality. It's a red flag about how it was stored — it means the instrument spent time somewhere dry. On its own, that's a cheap fix and shouldn't scare you off a good guitar.
What I do when a guitar comes in with sprouted ends is treat it as a prompt to look closer at the things dry air can genuinely hurt: check the fingerboard (especially ebony) for hairline cracks, look at the finish for shrinkage checking, and make sure the neck still takes a normal setup. If those all check out, sharp ends are just a to-do item, not a dealbreaker. How to prevent it in the first place
Prevention is genuinely easy and cheaper than any repair:
- Keep your guitars around 40–50% relative humidity. A cheap hygrometer in the room (or in the case) takes the guessing out of it.
- In winter, or in a dry climate, store the guitar in its case with a case or soundhole humidifier — that's the most reliable combo.
- Don't leave an instrument on a stand next to a radiator, heat vent, or a sunny window.
- Ebony and rosewood boards need the most attention; a finished maple board is more forgiving but not immune.
Do that and the odds are you'll never feel a sharp fret end on your own guitars again.

Are sharp fret ends dangerous to my guitar?
The sharp ends themselves are only a comfort issue. The real concern is what caused them — prolonged dryness — which can also crack a fingerboard (ebony especially) or check a finish. Fix the humidity and the underlying risk goes away.
Will the frets pop out or come loose from this?
No. Sprout is the board shrinking under stationary frets, not the frets lifting. Loose or lifting frets are a separate issue with different causes.
How much does it cost to fix sharp fret ends?
A fret-end dress is one of the least expensive pieces of fretwork a tech offers, since it removes very little material and doesn't touch your action. Prices vary by shop, but it's a minor job — nothing like the cost of a level-and-crown or a refret.
My guitar is brand new and already has sharp ends — did I get a lemon?
Almost certainly not. A new guitar built or stored in humid conditions can sprout within days of arriving in a dry home or shop. It's an environment story, not a quality one. Humidify it and, if needed, have the ends dressed.
