Here's the short answer, because you probably came here mid-frustration with a guitar in your lap: when a bent note buzzes out or dies partway through the bend, the string is running into a fret higher up the neck than the one you're fretting. That's it. Everything else — action height, neck relief, fret condition, fretboard radius — is just a different reason the string ran out of room. I've had hundreds of these on the bench, and it's almost always fixable, usually without spending a dime on parts.
Let me walk you through how I actually diagnose it, in the order I check things, so you can figure out whether you've got a five-minute setup tweak or something that needs a tech.
Fretting out is not the same as fret buzz
People use these interchangeably, but they point to different problems. Open-string or lightly-fretted buzz that's there all the time is usually a relief or nut issue. Fretting out on a bend is specific: you push the string up a step or a step-and-a-half, and instead of ringing, the note chokes, goes dull, or sputters into a buzz. It tends to show up worst above the 12th fret, on the G and B strings, where players bend the most.
The reason it happens on bends in particular is geometry. When you bend, you're not just raising pitch — you're dragging the string sideways across the curve of the fretboard, toward the center of the neck. On a curved board, the middle sits higher than the edges, so the string is effectively climbing uphill into the tops of the frets as you bend. If the action is low, there isn't much headroom before it makes contact.
Suspect #1: your action is set too low for the radius
This is the most common cause by a mile, and it's the one people bring on themselves chasing a super-low setup. If the note frets out pretty much everywhere you bend — not one dead spot, but generally across the neck — you've almost certainly just set the action lower than your fretboard's curve can support.
The rounder the fretboard, the more this bites you. A vintage-style 7.25" radius — the classic Fender spec on a lot of older and reissue Strats and Teles — is the most choke-happy of all: that tight curve hits the crown almost immediately unless you keep the action a touch higher. Flatter modern boards (a 12", or a compound radius that flattens out as you go up the neck) let you run lower action and still bend a step-and-a-half at the top. Neither is "better" — it's a trade. Just know that if you love low action and big bends, a rounder board is going to fight you.
The fix: raise the offending string a hair at the bridge and try the bend again. Keep nudging until it rings clean through the full bend. This is the single most effective adjustment, and it's reversible. Suspect #2: not enough neck relief (or an outright back-bow)
Relief is the tiny amount of forward bow in the neck that gives the strings room to vibrate. Too little relief — or worse, a neck pulled into a back-bow by an over-tightened truss rod — and the middle of the fretboard rises toward the strings. That kills your bend headroom in exactly the spot where you need it.
Check it: capo the 1st fret, hold the string down at the last fret, and look at the gap over the middle frets. You want a sliver of daylight — roughly the thickness of a thin business card. Bone-flat or back-bowed and you've found your problem.
The fix: a small truss rod adjustment to add relief, loosening the rod (counter-clockwise, usually a quarter turn at a time). Small moves, then let it settle. Suspect #3: one high or uneven fret
Now the important tell. If the note only frets out in one specific place — say, bends at the 9th fret on the B string choke but everywhere else is fine — this usually isn't a setup problem at all. You've got a high fret, or an uneven set of frets, and the string is catching on a neighbor that sits proud of the rest.
You can confirm it with a fret rocker or even a short steel ruler laid across three frets at a time: if it teeters on the middle one, that fret is high. Worn frets do this too, which is why an older guitar that always played fine can suddenly start choking bends in the cowboy-chord zone where you've logged the most hours.
The fix: this is real fretwork — a level, crown, and polish, or in a bad case a partial or full refret. It's not a knob you can turn. It's also completely routine bench work, and a good fret level transforms how a guitar bends. If you're inspecting a used guitar, learning to spot this before you buy is worth a lot; a guitar that frets out in one spot isn't broken, but it should factor into the price.
Suspect #4: bridge saddle radius that doesn't match the board
This one's sneakier and more common on guitars with individually adjustable saddles. The arc your saddles form should roughly match — or sit a touch flatter than — the fretboard radius. If a couple of saddles are set way off, you'll get the maddening situation where the outer strings sit fine but a middle string bends out, or vice versa, and no amount of overall height adjustment cures all of them at once. You end up raising everything just to stop one string choking.
The fix: reset the saddle heights to follow the fretboard's curve, then set overall action from there. On a wraparound or a fixed-radius bridge you don't have this lever, which is one reason those setups can feel less fiddly.
So what do I actually do first?
My order on the bench is simple. I bend across the whole neck and listen. Choking everywhere means setup — add a little relief if it's missing, then raise the action until bends ring clean, and accept that a rounder radius sets a floor on how low you can go.
