I've had hundreds of used guitars on the bench, and a squealing pickup is one of the most common "is this thing ruined?" panics I see. It almost never is. Here's what's actually happening and what makes it stop.
What "microphonic" actually means
A pickup is just thousands of turns of very fine wire wound around magnets. When your string vibrates, it disturbs the magnetic field and the coil turns that into a signal. That's the job. The problem is that a coil doesn't only respond to strings — if the wire itself can physically move, any vibration reaching it (your pick attack, the body resonating, sound bouncing off your amp) also gets turned into signal. Crank the gain and that stray signal builds into a runaway squeal.
The fix that's been used since the 1950s is wax potting: dipping the pickup in gently melted wax (usually a paraffin-and-beeswax blend, kept around 140°F) so it soaks into the coil and locks every turn of wire in place. Is it actually microphonic? Three quick checks
Before you tear into anything, make sure you're chasing the right ghost. Three different noises get lumped together as "squeal," and only one of them is a microphonic pickup.
1. The tap test
Plug in, turn up to a moderate volume, and gently tap the pickup cover or bobbin with a fingertip or the rubber end of a pencil. A healthy, well-potted pickup gives a dull, quiet thud. A microphonic one will knock loudly through the amp, almost like tapping a live microphone. If you can practically talk into your pickup and hear yourself, that's your answer.
2. Rule out the "good" feedback
Musical feedback — the singing sustain you get standing in front of a loud amp — needs volume in the room and a note already ringing. Microphonic squeal is different: it starts on its own, often as a high, thin whistle, even when you're not playing and even at bedroom volume once the gain is up. If muting the strings with your palm kills it completely, it's probably string-driven feedback, not the pickup.
3. Rule out hum
A steady 60-cycle hum that changes when you touch the strings or turn your body is a shielding or single-coil issue, not a microphonic one. Microphonic trouble is a squeal or whistle, not a hum.
The three usual culprits
When it really is microphonic, the cause is almost always one of three things — and two of them have nothing to do with the coil at all.
A loose metal cover. This is the one people never guess. Most humbucker covers sit with a slight air gap over the bobbins, and if the cover isn't tightly bonded to the baseplate it vibrates like a tiny drumhead. On a covered pickup, this is the single most common cause of squeal, and the coil underneath can be perfectly good.
A pickup loose in its ring or route. The height screws and springs are supposed to hold the pickup firmly. If those springs are mushy or the screws have backed out, the whole pickup can bounce in the cavity and feed back. Sometimes "fixing" a squeal is as simple as snugging the two height screws so there's no slack.
An unpotted or lightly potted coil. Some pickups — especially vintage-style PAF replicas — are deliberately left unpotted or only lightly potted for a bit more "air." Many of Gibson's original late-'50s PAFs weren't wax potted either. A well-made unpotted pickup is fine at club volume; push it into modern high-gain territory and it may start to complain. That's not a defect, it's a design trade-off.
What actually fixes it
Match the fix to the cause:
If it's the mounting, tighten the height screws until the pickup is held firmly with no wobble. Free, two minutes, and it's the first thing you should try.
If it's a loose cover, the real fix is to re-seat and re-solder the cover to the baseplate so there's no air gap, ideally with a little wax or a shim under it to kill the resonance. This is a soldering job on the pickup itself — doable at home if you're handy with an iron, but easy to overheat and damage if you're not.
If it's an unpotted coil, the answer is wax potting: gently melt the wax, submerge the pickup until the air bubbles stop rising, and let it drain and cool. It's not complicated, but wax that's too hot can melt the fine coil wire's insulation or the bobbin. If the pickup has any collector or vintage value, this is a job for someone who's done it before. Either way, potting or a cover re-solder is inexpensive bench work — one of the better-value repairs out there.
The tone debate: does potting kill the magic?
This is where the forums catch fire, so let me give you my honest read. Vintage purists insist that wax potting suffocates a pickup — that it squelches the "airiness" and overtones that make old unpotted PAFs special. Modernists roll their eyes and point out that an unpotted pickup that squeals every time you step on a boost is useless on a loud stage.
Where does the truth sit? In controlled A/B tests, the measured frequency difference between a potted and unpotted version of the same pickup is tiny — small enough that a lot of it sits down in measurement noise. Potting doesn't change how your string sounds; it only mutes the pickup's own accidental whispers. So most of the "lost magic" is, in my experience, more romance than reality.
But — a pickup potted too heavily or in wax that's too thick can end up sounding a touch flat. The takeaway isn't "never pot," it's "pot properly." If you love an unpotted pickup and play at reasonable volumes, leave it alone. If it squeals when you actually use it, potting it isn't the crime some people make it out to be.
What I check on the bench when a used guitar squeals
When one comes in howling, I don't assume the pickup is toast. I do the tap test to confirm it's genuinely microphonic, then check the easy stuff first: height screws snug, cover tight, nothing loose in the cavity. Nine times out of ten it's a mounting or cover issue, not the coil. A squeal on a used guitar is rarely a reason to walk away from an otherwise good instrument — it's usually a cheap fix hiding behind a scary noise.
