Why Do Gibson Sunbursts Fade? Unburst, Lemonburst, and Honeyburst Explained

Here's the short version, because it's the question I get asked across the bench more than almost any other finish question: your Gibson sunburst is fading because the red dye Gibson used is fugitive — it isn't lightfast, so ultraviolet light slowly breaks it down. The amber and yellow underneath hold on far better, so as the red thins out, the guitar drifts toward orange, then honey, then a washed-out lemon. That's not damage, it's not a defect, and it's not something you did wrong. It's chemistry doing exactly what that particular dye always does.

What trips people up is the vocabulary. Someone calls a top an "unburst" or a "teaburst" or a "honeyburst" and it sounds like Gibson offered those as options. Mostly they didn't — those are names players and collectors invented later to describe how far along the fade is. Once you understand the one thing that's actually happening, every one of those terms falls into place.

What's actually in a sunburst finish

To understand why the red goes first, it helps to picture how the finish is layered. A sunburst isn't one coat of paint. On a typical figured-top Gibson it's a stack: bare wood, then dye to color it, then clear coats over the top to protect it and give it depth.

The two colors that make a "cherry" sunburst are a yellow/amber base across the whole top and a red that's sprayed heavier around the edges and blended toward the middle. Those live as dye in and just under the surface. Over all of it sits clear nitrocellulose lacquer. Here's the part that matters, and it's laid out in the illustration at the top of this piece: the red is doing most of the visual work, it sits high in the stack, and it's the least stable pigment of the bunch.

Why the red is the first thing to go

The red Gibson reached for on those tops was an aniline dye. Aniline dyes are prized because they're vivid and they let the wood grain show through instead of hiding it — which is exactly what you want on a nice flame top. The catch is that many of them, red especially, simply aren't lightfast. Hit them with UV — sunlight through a window, stage lighting, even years of ordinary room light — and the color-producing molecules break down. The pigment literally stops reflecting the color it used to.

Because the amber and yellow components are far more stable, they stay put while the red retreats. That's the whole trick. You're not watching the guitar "turn yellow" — you're watching the red leave, revealing how much yellow was underneath the entire time. The clear lacquer ambers slightly with age too, nudging everything a touch warmer still.

How fast it happens comes down almost entirely to light exposure. A guitar that lived on a stand by a sunny window can shift noticeably in a few years; one that spent its life in a case can look nearly untouched after decades. Two guitars off the same line can end up looking like different finishes purely based on where they were kept.

The burst names, decoded

Now the vocabulary makes sense, because almost all of it just marks a point on that one-way trip:

  • Cherry Sunburst — the starting point, red fully intact.
  • Washed Cherry — the red has started thinning but is clearly still red.
  • Iced Tea / Teaburst — the first real stage of fade; a brownish, tea-colored shade with the red only hinting through. A huge number of aged bursts land here.
  • Honeyburst — warm amber dominates, very little red left.
  • Lemonburst / Unburst — the red is essentially gone and you're looking at yellow with dark edges.

A couple of honest caveats, because I'd rather you hear them from me than get burned later. "Iced Tea" and most of these labels never appeared in an original Gibson catalog — collectors coined them decades on to describe the ageing. And not every dark burst is a fade: Gibson has used genuinely dark finishes from the factory, sometimes to cover a top that wasn't figured enough to show off, so a dark, tobacco-ish 'burst can be original rather than aged. Provenance matters more than the shade alone.

Do modern Gibsons still fade?

Less, and it's worth knowing why. Gibson moved away from the old fugitive reds and toward more colorfast dyes, and modern clear coats generally carry UV inhibitors that slow the whole process down. So a Les Paul built in the last couple of decades is far more stable than a vintage one — it will not race toward lemonburst the way a '59 did.

"More stable" isn't "immune," though. Leave any dye-under-clear finish in direct sun long enough and you can still coax some movement out of it — it just takes real exposure now, not simply time. If you own a modern reissue hoping it'll fade into a vintage-looking honeyburst on its own, don't hold your breath, and please don't try to force it in the sun: you're as likely to cook the finish or warp the neck as you are to get an even, attractive fade.

Does a faded burst hurt the value?

Here's my take rather than a dodge. On vintage instruments an attractive, even fade is often a plus — a well-aged '59 with a gorgeous honeyburst or teaburst is exactly what a lot of buyers chase, and an original finish counts for a great deal. On modern guitars it's more neutral, and it comes down to whether the fade looks even and intentional or blotchy and one-sided. An uneven fade — one bout lighter than the other, a stripe where a strap or case lid blocked the light — is the thing that actually costs you.

What should give you pause isn't fading at all — it's a fade that doesn't add up. A "vintage-faded" top with suspiciously fresh, vivid red hiding under the pickguard or in the control cavity can be a sign of a refinish or a touch-up rather than honest age. When we take in a used Les Paul, that mismatch is one of the first things we check.

What about Epiphones and poly-finished guitars?

Here's a myth worth killing: people say "nitro fades, poly doesn't" and treat the topcoat as the whole story. It isn't. The dramatic red-drops-out fade is about the dye, not whether the clear is nitro or polyurethane. Most Epiphones and other poly-finished guitars use more stable, opaque colorants to begin with — that's the real reason they rarely do the vintage disappearing-red act. In my experience you just don't see an Epiphone honeyburst quietly turning into a lemonburst on the wall. A classic fade comes from fugitive red aniline dye, and that's a Gibson-heritage recipe more than a nitro-versus-poly one.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reverse a faded sunburst?

Not really, short of a refinish. The dye that produced the red is chemically spent — there's nothing to "bring back." Anyone selling you a spray or a polish that restores faded color is selling you a story. A good clean and a fresh set of strings will make it look its best, but the color it is now is the color it is.

Should I keep my guitar out of the light to stop it fading?

If preserving the exact original color matters to you, yes — store it in its case, or at least keep it off a sunny wall. If you love the idea of it ageing gracefully, play it and let it live. Just know that natural fade is uneven and unpredictable, so you're trading control for character either way.

Is a "honeyburst" a real Gibson color?

Gibson has used "Honey Burst" as a factory finish name at various points, so you can buy one new that's amber from day one. But when someone points at an aged Cherry Sunburst and calls it a honeyburst, they're describing the faded result, not a color code off the original spec sheet. Both usages are floating around, which is exactly why the terminology gets confusing.

Does fading change how the guitar sounds?

No. It's a surface-color change in the dye. It doesn't touch the wood, the neck, the electronics, or anything that makes noise. A faded 'burst plays and sounds like it always did — it just tells a longer story while it does it.
