Is Summer Heat and Humidity Actually Hurting Your Guitar?

Short version: your guitar is tougher than the internet makes it sound, but summer is genuinely the season it can get hurt — and the way it gets hurt is almost never the way people worry about. The real damage doesn't come from a warm room. It comes from two things: humidity that drifts far from where the wood is happy, and heat spikes from leaving the instrument somewhere it never should have been. Keep it out of the car and keep the room it lives in reasonable, and you've handled about 95% of the risk.
I've had hundreds of used guitars across the bench, and the summer casualties fall into predictable buckets. Let me walk through what actually happens, what's overblown, and the handful of habits that keep a guitar out of the repair queue.
Humidity is the slow problem. Heat is the fast one.
People blur these together, but they behave completely differently. Humidity works on your guitar over days and weeks by changing how much moisture is in the wood. Heat works in minutes by softening the glue and finish. You manage them with different habits, so it's worth keeping them separate in your head.
Where the wood wants to live
Wood is hygroscopic — it takes on and gives up moisture to match the air around it, and it changes size as it does. The range most builders and repair techs point to is roughly 45–55% relative humidity, with 40–60% being the wider "you're fine" zone. Inside that band, the wood is stable and the guitar plays the way it was set up to play. Outside it, in either direction, the instrument starts moving.
Too dry: the winter problem that follows you into a summer of air conditioning
Dry air pulls moisture out of the wood and it shrinks. On a fretboard that means the board narrows while the metal frets don't — so the fret ends start poking out past the edge and snag your hand. That's "fret sprout," and it's the single most common humidity complaint I see. Keep drying it out and the neck can go dead straight or back-bow, dropping your action until it buzzes; on an acoustic the top sinks, and in a bad case the top or back cracks along the grain.
You'd think summer means humid, but if you run aggressive air conditioning — or live somewhere genuinely arid — indoor summer air can get dry. Worth knowing, because people blame winter for fret sprout and then get caught by a heavily air-conditioned July.
Too humid: the classic summer trap
The more common summer direction is too wet. Wood swells as it absorbs moisture. On an acoustic the top bellies up, the action climbs, and the guitar can start to feel stiff and dull. Metal doesn't like it either — frets, strings, saddles and tuners corrode faster in damp air, and strings die quickly. Leave an instrument in a humid closet or a damp case long enough and you can get glue-joint creep or even mold inside the case. None of this happens overnight, which is exactly why it sneaks up on people over a long, sticky summer.
Heat: the one that actually kills guitars
Here's the part I wish more people took seriously. A guitar sitting in a warm 80°F room is fine. A guitar in a closed car is in real danger, fast. Glue starts to soften somewhere north of about 90°F, and the inside of a parked car on a sunny day runs 120–170°F — the dashboard can read even higher. That's more than enough to let a glued bridge creep, pop a brace loose, or shift a set neck. I've seen the aftermath: a bridge lifting at one corner, or a top that came back from a road trip with a seam that wasn't there before.
Finish is the other casualty. A nitrocellulose finish can blister or go soft in extreme heat. And nitro has a second vulnerability — checking, the fine spiderweb cracks you see on old finishes. Those come from rapid temperature swings, not steady heat: pull a cold guitar into a hot room, or a hot guitar into a blasting-cold one, and the lacquer and the wood underneath expand at different rates until the finish crazes. The fix is patience. Let a guitar acclimate in its closed case for a half hour or more before you open it after any big temperature change.
The single most useful sentence in this whole article: do not leave your guitar in the car. Not the trunk, not "just for an hour," not on a mild day that turns sunny. More guitars are ruined this way every summer than by any humidity swing.
Electric vs acoustic: know which fight you're in
Not every guitar is equally at risk, and the tonewood-heavy corners of the internet oversell the danger for solidbodies. A solidbody electric — a Les Paul, a Strat, an SG — is a thick slab with no braced, glued-under-tension soundboard, so it shrugs off humidity swings that would genuinely hurt a thin-topped acoustic. What you'll still see on an electric is fret sprout when it dries out, hardware corrosion when it's damp, and a bit of neck movement that a truss-rod tweak sorts out. The heat rules, though, apply to everything. A hot car will lift the bridge on an electric and soften the finish on anything.
Acoustics and semi-hollows (thinlines, ES-style bodies) are the ones to fuss over. Thin plates and lots of glued joints under string tension mean humidity extremes show up as real structural trouble, not just an annoyance.
How to actually store it this summer
You don't need a climate lab. You need a few boring habits:
- Keep it in living space, not the extremes. A room you're comfortable in is a room your guitar is comfortable in. Avoid the attic, the garage, the trunk, and any spot in direct sun.
- Buy a $12 hygrometer. Stop guessing. Drop one where the guitar lives and glance at it. If you're sitting in the 40–60% range, relax; if you're not, act.
- Case it if the room swings. A closed case is a slower, calmer little climate. For a dry room, add a soundhole or case humidifier; for a damp one, toss in a two-way humidity pack or a desiccant and check it.
- Acclimate before you open. After any car ride or shipment, let the closed case sit indoors for 30+ minutes so the temperature equalizes before you expose the finish.
- Wipe it down. Ten seconds with a cloth after playing pulls sweat off the strings and hardware — the cheapest corrosion insurance there is.

Is it bad to leave my guitar on a wall hanger or stand in summer?
Out on a stand is fine as long as the room stays reasonable and out of direct sun. The wall isn't the risk — the room's humidity and any afternoon sunbeam hitting the finish are. If your room swings a lot, a closed case is safer.
Do I really need a humidifier for an electric guitar?
Usually no. Solidbody electrics tolerate humidity swings well. If your space gets genuinely dry (hard air conditioning, arid climate) and you're seeing fret sprout, a case humidifier helps — but most electrics just need a sane room.
My guitar came back from a hot day feeling weird. Is it damaged?
Often it just needs to acclimate and settle — action and relief shift with temperature and moisture and can come back on their own. But if you see a lifting bridge, a new crack, a loose brace, or finish blistering, stop playing it and get it looked at. Those don't fix themselves.
What humidity number should I actually aim for?
45–55% is the target; 40–60% is fine. Precision matters less than avoiding the extremes and the swings.
