Here's the short version, the way I'd explain it across the bench to someone holding a Stratocaster for the first time: the blade switch picks which of the three pickups you hear, and the two "in-between" clicks blend two pickups at once. With the switch tipped all the way toward the neck you get the neck pickup; all the way toward the bridge you get the bridge pickup. The famous glassy, hollow "quack" — the sound you know from a hundred funk, blues, and pop records — lives in positions 2 and 4. That's the whole trick. But why those in-between positions sound the way they do, and why they're quieter on some Strats than others, is where most explanations go sideways.

I've had a lot of Strats and Strat-style guitars on the bench, and the 5-way switch is one of the most misunderstood parts of the instrument. So let's walk through it properly.

The five positions, from bridge to neck

Almost every standard three-single-coil Strat is wired the same way. Holding the guitar in playing position, here's what each detent gives you:

  • Position 1 (switch toward the floor/bridge): bridge pickup alone — bright, cutting, a little twangy. This is your lead-and-bite setting.
  • Position 2: bridge + middle together — the first "quack."
  • Position 3: middle pickup alone — rounded and even, a nice middle-of-the-road clean.
  • Position 4: middle + neck together — the second, warmer "quack."
  • Position 5 (switch toward the neck): neck pickup alone — warm, full, and vocal.

Where the "quack" actually comes from

This is the part people get wrong constantly, so I want to be careful. When you select two pickups in positions 2 or 4, they're wired in parallel — each pickup feeds the output on its own, side by side. Because the two pickups sit a couple of inches apart under the strings, they're "hearing" the string vibrate at slightly different points. When you sum those two signals, some frequencies reinforce and some partially cancel. The shared low mids get scooped out, and what's left is that thin, glassy, hollowed-out honk. That's the quack.

Here's the myth I bust at least once a month: the Strat quack is not out-of-phase wiring. A true out-of-phase sound — think the thin, nasal Peter Green neck-and-bridge tone — happens when one pickup is electrically reversed, and it's a much more extreme, hollow warble. The Strat's in-between positions are perfectly in phase; the scoop comes purely from the two pickups' physical spacing and parallel summing. One practical consequence of parallel wiring: positions 2 and 4 are a touch quieter than the single-pickup settings. That small volume dip is normal. It's not a fault, and it's not your pots — it's just how two pickups in parallel behave.

Why positions 2 and 4 hum on some Strats but not others

Single-coil pickups pick up electrical hum — that 60-cycle buzz you get near lights, screens, and dimmers. On a lot of Strats, positions 2 and 4 are noticeably quieter in the hum department than the single-pickup positions, and there's a specific reason.

Modern Strats use a middle pickup that's reverse-wound and reverse-polarity — RWRP for short. The coil is wound the opposite direction and its magnets face the opposite way compared to the neck and bridge pickups. When you combine the RWRP middle with either of its neighbors, the hum the two coils pick up is opposite and cancels out, while the actual guitar signal stays. In other words, positions 2 and 4 behave like a humbucker for noise, but still sound like two single coils. You keep the quack and lose the buzz. It's one of the cleverest quiet upgrades in electric guitar design.

The catch: this wasn't always standard. Fender first made the RWRP middle the norm on the American Standard Stratocaster in late 1986. Vintage guitars — and plenty of deliberately period-correct reissues and boutique pickup sets since — skip it to stay true to the originals, so their 2 and 4 positions hum just like every other setting. So if you're eyeing a used Strat and the seller swears "the in-between positions are dead quiet," that's a real, checkable claim: plug in, roll through the positions, and listen. It tells you something about which pickups are in there.

A little history: it used to be a 3-way

The in-between sounds were a happy accident. When Leo Fender launched the Strat in 1954, it came with a 3-way switch — neck, middle, or bridge, one at a time. Players quickly figured out that if you balanced the blade between the notches, you'd catch two pickups at once, and they liked it enough to jam matchsticks, toothpicks, and folded matchbook covers into the switch to hold it there. Fender finally caught up and made the 5-way switch factory-standard in 1977, adding detents at positions 2 and 4 so you no longer needed the toothpick. Same switching idea, just with two extra clicks so the sweet spots stay put.

What about HSS and modified Strats?

Not every Strat follows the classic recipe. On an HSS Strat (humbucker in the bridge), position 1 is the humbucker, and the in-between positions usually split or combine differently depending on the wiring. Guitars with a bridge humbucker change the map, so don't assume the chart above applies to every "Strat-shaped" guitar. And if a used one has clearly been modified — extra mini-switches, push-pull pots, a blend knob — all bets are off until you actually plug in and click through everything.

If you want the two combinations a stock 5-way can't give you (neck + bridge, or all three), the common fix is adding a small "blender" or an extra switch. It's a tidy mod, but know that it changes resale expectations for purists, so weigh it before you drill.

So which position should you actually use?

Honestly? All of them, and the guitar rewards you for exploring. As a rough guide from the bench: position 5 (neck) for warm clean chords and bluesy lead; position 4 for that glassy funk and jangly clean rhythm; position 3 as a balanced all-rounder; position 2 for spanky, percussive rhythm that cuts without being harsh; and position 1 (bridge) when you need to bite through a mix. The beauty of a well-set-up Strat is that the switch is basically five different guitars under your fingers — and you don't need to buy anything to unlock them.

FAQ

Which way is position 1 — toward the bridge or the neck?
By convention, position 1 is the bridge pickup (switch tipped toward the bridge/floor) and position 5 is the neck. Some players number them the opposite way, so when in doubt, describe it as "bridge" or "neck" rather than a number.

Is the Strat quack the same as out-of-phase?
No. The quack in positions 2 and 4 is two in-phase pickups summed in parallel; the scoop comes from their spacing. True out-of-phase wiring reverses one pickup electrically and sounds far thinner and more nasal.

Why are positions 2 and 4 a little quieter in volume?
That slight drop is normal for two pickups in parallel. It isn't a wiring fault or a worn pot.

My in-between positions still hum — is something broken?
Probably not. If the middle pickup isn't RWRP (common on vintage guitars and some vintage-style reissues), positions 2 and 4 won't hum-cancel. It's a pickup choice, not a defect.
