Should You Loosen the Strings to Ship or Store a Guitar?

Here is the short version, and I will spend the rest of this article backing it up: for a guitar living in a case or on a stand at home, leave it tuned to pitch. Don't detune it. For a guitar going in a box to cross the country, dropping the strings a whole step is cheap insurance — but going fully slack is not the goal, and it brings its own problems. Most of the confusion online comes from treating "storage" and "shipping" as the same question. They aren't.
I've had hundreds of instruments come across the bench, packed and unpacked more than I can count, and seen exactly what does and doesn't hurt a neck. So let's separate the two situations and deal with each honestly.

What string tension is actually doing
A set of strings at pitch pulls on the neck with somewhere in the neighborhood of a hundred pounds of tension, all of it trying to bow the neck forward. Your truss rod is a steel bar inside the neck adjusted to push back against exactly that pull. When a guitar is set up well, those two forces are in balance and the neck sits nearly straight with a hair of relief.
That balance is the whole reason "just loosen the strings" is not the automatic good idea people assume it is. Take all the tension off and the truss rod is now pushing against nothing — on some necks that leaves the rod free to pull the neck into a slight back-bow until you tune back up. It won't destroy anything in a day or two, but it means a fully slack guitar is not sitting in the stable, engineered state it was built for. A guitar tuned to pitch, or close to it, is.
Storing a guitar at home? Leave it tuned
This is the easy one. If your guitar is going to sit in its case or on a wall hanger for weeks or even a few months, tune it to pitch and leave it alone. The neck is happiest under the load it was designed for, and a good instrument holds that tension for years without complaint. Constantly cranking the strings down and back up does more to unsettle a setup than just leaving it be.
What actually threatens a stored guitar isn't string tension — it's the air around it. Heat and dryness move wood far more than a hundred pounds of steady, familiar pull ever will. Keep it out of attics, trunks, and rooms that swing from humid to bone-dry, and you've handled the real risk.
When a detune for storage does make sense
There are a few honest exceptions. If you're putting an instrument away for a very long stretch — think many months to years, untouched — backing the strings off a step or two is reasonable insurance, because you won't be around to catch a season's worth of wood movement. The same goes for an older guitar with a tired truss rod, or a vintage piece with a non-adjustable rod, where you'd rather not leave full tension sitting on a neck you can't easily correct. For a modern, healthy guitar you'll pick up again next month, none of that applies.
Shipping is a different problem entirely
Here's where people give the wrong advice for the right reasons. When a guitar ships, the thing that breaks it is almost never string tension sitting quietly in the box. It's impact — a dropped box, a thrown package, a pallet set down hard. And the part that pays for it is the headstock.

On a guitar with an angled headstock — most Gibsons, plenty of others — the wood right behind the nut is thin and already carrying the full forward pull of six strings. In transit the body and neck are cradled by the case, but the headstock hangs unsupported. Any sharp jolt that whips the head forward is fighting that stored string tension, and that's the exact recipe for the break every tech has repaired a hundred times. Take a little tension out of the equation and you take some energy out of that failure.
That's why I detune a whole step before a guitar goes in a box. Not floppy — just enough that the strings aren't at full stretch and there's a bit of give if the package takes a hit. A couple of turns down on each tuner is plenty. It's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy on an instrument.
Why not go fully slack for shipping?
Because slack introduces new ways to get hurt. Strings flopping loose let the whole guitar shift in the case, and they let a floating tremolo, a Tune-o-matic bridge, or a wraparound tailpiece move around and rattle against the finish. If you've got a Strat or a Floyd with a floating trem, dropping the strings changes the spring balance and can leave the bridge sitting on the body. Better to take the whammy bar off, wrap any loose hardware, and leave enough string tension to keep everything seated.
The honest disagreement
I'll be straight that not everyone agrees with me here. Some builders and shops — Larrivée is famous for it — tell you to never take tension off for shipping, on the logic that the neck and truss rod should stay in the balance they were set up in, and that a properly packed guitar doesn't need the help. That's a legitimate position, and if a guitar is boxed like a museum piece it holds up. My take is that shipping is rougher and less predictable than any of us would like, and a modest whole-step drop costs nothing while quietly lowering the odds on the one failure that actually ends guitars. Reasonable people land on either side; almost nobody who ships a lot of guitars argues for fully slack.
My honest take from the bench
Treat the two situations as the different problems they are. At home, tune it up and worry about temperature and humidity instead of tension. In a box, drop it a whole step, pull the whammy bar, immobilize any loose hardware, and pack the case so nothing can shift — especially around that headstock. Do those things and string tension stops being something you have to fuss over. What ruins guitars in transit is a bad pack job and an unlucky drop, not the hundred pounds of pull they were built to carry every day of their lives.

Do I need to detune my guitar to store it in its case?
No. For normal storage of weeks or months, leave it tuned to pitch — the neck is designed to sit under that load. Only consider a small detune for very long-term storage, or for older instruments with weak or non-adjustable truss rods.
How much should I loosen the strings before shipping?
About a whole step — a couple of turns down on each tuner. That eases tension at the vulnerable headstock without leaving the strings floppy. Don't go fully slack; that lets the guitar and its hardware shift in the case.
Will leaving a guitar tuned up for years bow the neck?
A healthy guitar with a working truss rod handles years at pitch just fine. If anything moves seasonally, that's usually humidity, and it's corrected with a quick truss-rod tweak — not a reason to keep the strings slack.
Does this apply to acoustics too?
Same logic. Store them tuned to pitch in stable humidity; for shipping, a whole-step drop is the common, sensible move, and the delicate area is still the neck and headstock.
