Should You Loosen Your Guitar Strings for Shipping or Storage? An Honest Answer from the Bench

This one comes across the bench constantly, usually from someone about to mail a guitar across the country or tuck one away for a year. The honest answer depends on which of those you're doing, because they aren't the same problem. Shipping and storage get lumped together, but the risks are different — so the right move is different too. Here's the short version, then the reasoning so you can make the call yourself.
- Shipping: back the strings off a step or two, but do not go fully slack. What actually saves the guitar is padding and a good box, not the string tension.
- Short-term storage (weeks to a couple of months) in a stable room: leave it tuned to pitch. Don't overthink it.
- Long-term storage (many months to years), or anywhere the climate swings: back off the tension a little, and if you back off the strings meaningfully, back off the truss rod too.
If you take nothing else from this, take that last clause. The single most common mistake I see is someone who cranks the strings down to nothing and leaves the truss rod tightened for standard-tuning tension. Now there is nothing pulling the neck forward and a steel rod pulling it back. That is a recipe for back-bow, and it is entirely self-inflicted.
Why this is even a debate: the neck is a tug-of-war
To understand the whole argument you have to picture what is happening inside the neck. Your strings pull the headstock forward with a fair amount of force — roughly 100 pounds of total tension on a standard-tuned electric, and more like 150 to 180 on a steel-string acoustic. Left unopposed, that pull would bow the neck like a bow and arrow. The truss rod is the counterweight: a steel rod that pulls the other way. On any healthy modern guitar, those two forces are set against each other so the neck sits where you want it.

That balance is why the "always detune" crowd and the "never detune" crowd both have a point. Detune and you relieve the string side of the tug-of-war, but you also leave the truss rod pulling against nothing unless you adjust it. For a guitar that lives in a stable room, tuned-and-left-alone is genuinely fine — I've seen plenty of instruments sit at pitch for years with perfectly straight necks. Tension is the neck's normal working state, not an emergency.
Shipping: what I actually do, and why
Shipping is a different animal because the threat isn't slow and steady — it's sudden impact. Boxes get dropped, thrown, and stacked. The classic casualty is the angled headstock, the Gibson-style design that tilts back behind the nut. There's a patch of short grain right there where the wood is weakest, and when a case lands flat on its back the headstock levers against the neck and cracks.

So why back the strings off? Two reasons, and I'll be straight that they're reasoning and experience, not laboratory-proven. A string at pitch is storing energy and pulling on that exact weak joint the whole time, so dropping it a step or two takes some load off. And on a hard knock, a slightly slacker string can shift a hair instead of transmitting the full jolt. In my experience that's a small edge, not a magic shield.
Worth knowing, too: not everyone agrees, and some serious builders land on the opposite side. Larrivée tells customers never to take tension off for shipping — their reasoning is that the machine heads and headstock are the heaviest parts of the guitar, and normal string tension helps brace those parts against transport stresses. That's a real argument, not a dumb one, which tells you the tension question is closer to a toss-up than the internet makes it sound.
What is not a toss-up is protection. This is where the consensus lives, and it matters far more than tuning:
- Slip a folded cloth or a piece of light cardboard under the strings over the fretboard so nothing rattles against the frets.
- Pack the headstock solid. The area under and around the headstock needs to be immobilized so it can't lever if the case lands flat.
- Use a proper case, then box the case with a couple of inches of padding on every side. A gig bag in a thin box is asking for trouble no matter what tuning it's in.
My routine ends up being: drop it a whole step, pad the headstock, card under the strings, hard case, double box. The detune is the least important item on that list — but it costs nothing, so I do it.
Long-term storage: a slow problem, not a sudden one
Storage flips the logic. There's no impact to fear, so stored string energy isn't really the enemy — time plus environment is. A guitar that sits a couple of months in a climate-controlled room is fine at pitch; leave it be. The case for backing off tension gets stronger the longer it sits and the less controlled the space is.
When I do slacken for storage
If a guitar is going away for many months or years, or into a space that swings hot and cold or damp and dry — an attic, a garage, a basement — I ease the tension off. Not to zero, just enough to reduce the sustained pull while the wood rides out seasonal swings. The concern is a neck slowly taking a set or a twist over a long stretch of neglect, which is a real thing on instruments left rigged tight and forgotten in a bad environment for years.
Vintage guitars and anything with a weak or non-adjustable truss rod get more caution — those necks don't have a modern rod to hold the line, so long-term tension is more of a gamble, and slackening for long storage is the safer default.
But — say it with me — if you drop the string tension a lot, ease the truss rod off too so both sides of the tug-of-war stay in the same ballpark. When you bring the guitar back to pitch, expect to spend a few minutes resetting relief and intonation. A guitar coming out of long storage wants a little setup love anyway.
The thing everyone forgets: humidity
The uncomfortable truth after all that string talk: for a guitar in storage, humidity does far more damage than string tension ever will. Wood drinks in moisture and swells, then dries and shrinks, and it's that repeated cycle that cracks finishes, lifts bridges, and warps necks. String tension is a steady load the guitar was built to carry. Humidity swings are the wild card.
Aim for roughly 45 to 55 percent relative humidity and, more importantly, keep it stable. A guitar held at a steady, slightly-off humidity is happier than one that yo-yos between perfect and terrible. Obsess over string tension but leave the guitar in a bone-dry attic all winter, and you've guarded the wrong door.
How to detune without creating problems
If you decide to back the tension off, do it in a way that doesn't cause the trouble you were trying to avoid:
- Come down evenly across all six strings rather than dropping one all the way — reduce the total load in balance, don't yank the neck sideways.
- For shipping, a step or two is plenty. No reason to go dead slack.
- For long storage with a big tension drop, loosen the truss rod a little too, and note where it was so you can return it.
- On a floating tremolo — a Floyd Rose or similar — detuning throws the whole bridge out of balance and the reset is fussier. I lean toward leaving those near pitch and protecting them well instead.

Will leaving my guitar tuned to pitch for a year ruin the neck?
On a healthy modern guitar in a stable room, almost certainly not. Necks are designed to live under tension. The risk climbs with time, bad humidity, and older or weaker necks — not with tension alone.
Is it bad to go fully slack?
Only if you leave the truss rod tightened for full tension. With nothing pulling the neck forward, the rod can pull it into back-bow. If you go slack for a long stretch, ease the rod off to match.
Does detuning for shipping really prevent headstock breaks?
It may help a little by reducing stored load, but padding and a solid box do the real work. I detune a step or two because it's free insurance, not because it's a guarantee.
Should I detune between gigs or overnight?
