Should You Float, Deck, or Block Your Strat Tremolo?

Here's the short version, because it's the question I get asked across the bench at least once a week: if you don't actively use up-bends with the tremolo arm, you'll almost certainly be happier with a decked trem than a floating one. It stays in tune better, it survives a string break mid-set, and you give up almost nothing you were actually using. Floating is wonderful if you want it, but a lot of Strats leave the factory floating and their owners spend years fighting tuning problems they could simply set away.

That's the opinion. Now let me back it up, because "float, deck, or block" isn't really three products — it's three ways of setting the exact same hardware, and the right one depends entirely on how you play.

The three setups, in one breath

Flip a Strat on its back and you'll find a spring cavity: the tremolo block hangs down into the body, and two or three springs connect it to a "claw" screwed into the wood. The tug-of-war between string tension pulling one way and spring tension pulling the other is the entire mechanism. Where you set that balance gives you one of three states.

Floating means the back edge of the bridge plate lifts off the body, balanced so you can push the arm down to slacken the strings or pull up to stretch them sharp. That's the full vibrato range — the divebomb and the up-shimmer both.

Decked means you've tightened the claw (or added a spring) until the bridge plate sits flat against the body. You can still push the arm down for vibrato, but you can't pull up, because the plate is already resting on the wood. It's the classic "flush to the body" setup.

Blocked means you've jammed a piece of wood or metal into the cavity behind the trem block so the bridge can't move at all. Now it behaves like a hardtail: no vibrato, maximum tuning stability and sustain.

What floating actually costs you

A floating trem is a balancing act, and that's not a figure of speech — the bridge literally sits at whatever angle balances string pull against spring pull. The problem is that anything which changes string tension moves the whole bridge, and moving the bridge detunes every string at once.

Three things bite people. The first is bends. Bend the G string up a step on a floating trem and you've added tension on that string; the bridge tips forward a hair to compensate, and the other five strings go slightly flat while you're holding the bend. On chords with a sustained bent note under them, you can hear it. On a decked trem, the plate is resting on the body, so it can't tip forward — the bend stays put.

The second is string breaks. Snap a string on a floating trem in the middle of a song and you don't just lose that string; the sudden drop in tension lets the springs yank the bridge back, and the remaining five strings all go sharp. Your guitar is now unplayable until you deal with it. A decked or blocked trem barely flinches.

The third is tuning changes. Drop to D on a floating trem and every string you change shifts the balance for the others, so you chase your tail around the tuners. It's doable, just tedious.

None of this makes floating "bad." If you use the bar as a voice — the Jeff Beck and David Gilmour school of scoops and shimmers — up-bend capability is the whole point and worth the fuss. But be honest about whether you actually do that, or whether the arm mostly lives in a drawer.

Decking: the sweet spot for most players

For the majority of Strat players I set up, decked is the answer. You keep down-vibrato — the gentle wobble, the classic Hendrix-style dips, even fairly aggressive dives — and you trade away only the up-pull, which most players rarely use. In exchange you get noticeably steadier tuning, bends that don't drag the rest of the chord flat, and a guitar that shrugs off a broken string.

Setting it is straightforward: add tension at the claw (and often a third or additional spring) until the bridge plate just kisses the body, then re-tune. Done right, the plate rests with the lightest contact — not crushed down, just settled. It's reversible in ten minutes if you decide you want float back.

Blocking: when you want a hardtail that isn't one

Blocking is for players who never touch the bar and want every bit of stability and sustain the guitar can give. Wedging the trem solid turns your Strat into a de facto hardtail while leaving the door open to un-block it later — which is why it's popular on vintage or collectible instruments you don't want to drill or modify permanently.

The honest catch: a properly decked trem is already most of the way to blocked in stability, and it keeps your down-vibrato. So I only reach for a full block when someone tells me flatly they'll never use the arm. If there's any chance you'll want a little wobble someday, deck it instead.

Does the bridge design itself matter? Six-screw vs. two-point

This is where the internet argues, so let me be plain about what's actually true. There are two common Strat tremolo designs, and they pivot differently.

The two-point design (standard on American Standard, American Professional and most modern Strats) balances on two knife-edges that ride against two posts. Mechanically, the two-point has less friction and a more repeatable return-to-pitch, which is why it's the modern standard.

But here's the part the forums bury: a well-set-up six-screw trem — screws adjusted so the plate pivots cleanly on the outer two rather than cranked flat — returns to pitch just fine. Plenty of players find the vintage unit perfectly stable. The bridge type is a smaller variable than the setup, the nut, and the tuners, so don't let anyone sell you a bridge swap when a proper setup would do it.

That's the real headline: most Strat tuning misery doesn't start at the bridge at all. It starts at a binding nut slot, cheap tuning posts, or a trem that was never balanced. Sort those, choose float or deck deliberately, and a Strat stays in tune beautifully.

My honest take from the bench

If you're not sure, deck it. You lose the up-pull, you keep everything else, and you gain stability that makes the guitar more fun to play and gig. Float it if you genuinely play with the bar as a voice and you're willing to maintain the balance. Block it only if you're certain the arm's staying in the case forever. There's no wrong answer — there's only the setup that matches what your hands actually do.

FAQ

Does decking a Strat tremolo hurt the tone or sustain?

If anything, it slightly helps sustain, because more of the bridge is coupled to the body. Any tonal difference is subtle — players report a touch more directness — and it's swamped by strings, pickups, and setup. You're choosing decked for stability, not chasing a tone secret.

How many springs should I use?

Three is the common starting point for a floating setup. For a decked trem, many players go to four or five and tighten the claw to pull the plate flush. There's no magic number — it's whatever balances your string gauge and gets the plate where you want it.

Will heavier strings help my floating trem stay in tune?

They can. More string tension gives the mechanism a stronger, more repeatable pull back to pitch, so some players who fight tuning with 9s find 10s or 11s more stable. Balance the springs to match, and expect to reset intonation afterward.

Can I switch back later if I don't like decked?

Yes — that's the beauty of it. Float, deck, and block are all just spring-and-claw adjustments (blocking adds a removable wedge). Nothing is drilled or permanent, so you can experiment freely and change your mind in an afternoon.
