Should You Block Your Strat Tremolo, or Learn to Float It?
Here's the short version, because it's the question I get asked most across the bench: if you almost never touch the bar, deck or block your Strat trem and stop fighting it. If you use the whammy lightly for vibrato and the occasional shimmer, deck it. If you're a full-on dive-bomb, pull-up, Jeff Beck type of player, float it and commit to setting it up properly. Most players who walk in frustrated with a Strat that "won't stay in tune" are floating a trem they never actually use, and the fix is free.
That's the whole debate in three sentences. But the reasons behind it are worth understanding, because the choice quietly shapes how your guitar feels, how it handles a broken string mid-set, and how much time you spend at the tuner.
What "floating," "decked," and "blocked" actually mean
A vintage-style Strat tremolo is a tug-of-war. The strings pull the bridge forward toward the neck; two to five springs in the back cavity pull it back toward the tail. Where that balance settles is the only thing that changes between these three setups. The hardware is identical.
Floating means the bridge is balanced in mid-air, tilted slightly back off the body so you can push the bar down to go flat and pull it up to go sharp. Decked (sometimes called "flush" or "flat") means you've tightened the springs until the back edge of the bridge plate rests flat against the body, so the bar only dives down. Blocked means you've wedged a piece of hardwood or a purpose-made block into the cavity so the bridge can't move at all, turning your Strat into a hardtail for all practical purposes.
Floating: the most expressive, the most demanding
Floating is the only setup that gives you the full range of the vibrato. Up-bends, gentle warble under a held chord, the whole vocabulary. If that's part of your playing, nothing else will do.
The cost is real, though, and it's mostly about balance. Because the bridge sits at an equilibrium between string tension and spring tension, anything that changes one side moves the whole system. Bend a note hard and the other strings drop slightly flat. Worse, if a string breaks mid-song, the tension it was contributing disappears and the remaining five jump sharp as the springs win the tug-of-war. That's not a myth or a setup flaw; it's just physics, and it's the number-one reason gigging players give up on floating.
A floating trem also tends to give you the least sustain of the three, because some string energy goes into moving the bridge rather than staying in the string. In practice the difference is subtle, and I'll come back to how subtle in a moment.
Decked: the setup most players actually want
Decking is the quiet compromise that solves 90% of Strat tuning complaints. You add tension, usually by adding a spring or two toward the full set of five and tightening the claw screws in the back until the bridge plate snugs flat to the body. Now the bar still dives down for vibrato and pitch drops, but the bridge is braced against the body, so bends stay in tune far better and a broken string won't send everything sharp.
You give up the up-bend, and that's the honest tradeoff. For a lot of players that's no loss at all, because they were never pulling up in the first place. A decked Strat feels more solid under the picking hand and behaves like a much more stable guitar, while still letting you do the down-bar stuff most Strat parts actually call for.
Blocked: maximum stability, zero whammy
Blocking takes it all the way. With a block filling the gap behind the sustain block, the bridge can't travel in either direction. You get the most rock-solid tuning of the three, the most sustain, and total immunity to broken strings and alternate-tuning drift. This is what you do if you tune down to drop tunings, if you swap tunings a lot on one guitar, or if you simply never want to think about the trem again.
The obvious price is that you've removed a defining feature of the instrument. It's reversible, so it's a low-risk experiment, but if you block a Strat you're essentially saying you'd rather have had a hardtail. That's a perfectly reasonable thing to want, and plenty of great Strat players have played blocked or hardtail their whole careers.
Does decking or blocking actually change your tone?
This is where the internet gets loud, so let me be straight about it. Yes, pinning the bridge to the body lets more string energy stay in the string, and blocked or decked Strats generally sustain a hair longer and can feel a touch tighter and more immediate. You can hear it on a clean, ringing open chord if you're listening for it.
But it is a small effect, and it lives underneath much bigger variables like your pickups, string age, and setup. I'd never tell someone to block a guitar chasing a tone transformation; you'll be underwhelmed. Do it for the tuning stability and the feel, and treat any sustain gain as a bonus. Anyone who promises you a night-and-day tone change from decking a trem is overselling it.
A quick word on your bridge type
You'll see two designs out there. The vintage six-screw bridge pivots on six screws set into the body. The modern two-point bridge pivots on two posts with knife edges. The two-point design was Fender's answer to friction and tuning stability, and it does return to pitch a little more reliably because there are two contact points dragging instead of six. Both float, deck, and block the exact same way, so this doesn't change your decision. It just means a well-set-up two-point will generally be a little happier floating than an old six-screw with its middle screws snugged down tight. Either way, smooth tuning starts at the nut and the string tree as much as the bridge.
How to set yours the way you want it
None of this requires a tech. To move toward decked, take off the back cover, tune to pitch, and tighten the two claw screws a little at a time, retuning as you go, until the back of the bridge plate just kisses the body. Add a spring if you can't get there comfortably. To go the other way toward floating, loosen the claw until the plate tilts back roughly an eighth of an inch, then dial it in so the bridge sits level and returns to pitch. To block, deck it first, then fit a snug hardwood shim between the sustain block and the back wall of the cavity. Every one of these is reversible in ten minutes, which is the best argument for just trying them and feeling the difference yourself.

FAQ
Will decking my Strat hurt resale value?
No. Decking is just a spring-and-claw adjustment with no permanent change, and it's fully reversible. Blocking with a removable shim is reversible too. As long as you don't drill or modify anything, you haven't touched resale.
Why does my Strat go sharp when I bend one string?
That's a floating trem doing exactly what floating trems do. Bending adds tension that the springs give back by letting the bridge pull forward, dropping the other strings. Deck the trem and the problem largely disappears.
Is a two-point tremolo better than a six-screw?
For tuning stability when floating, generally yes, because it has fewer friction points at the pivot. For vintage feel and looks, a lot of players prefer the six-screw. Neither is "better" in the abstract; it depends on how you play the bar.
Can I just add more springs instead of blocking?
Adding springs and tightening the claw is exactly how you deck a trem, and for most people that's enough. A block only matters if you want the bridge truly immovable for heavy dropped tunings or maximum stability.
