What Do the Pole Piece Screws on Your Pickup Actually Do? (And Should You Touch Them?)

Short version, because it’s the question I get across the counter: those little screws on your pickup are for string-to-string balance, not for adding gain or unlocking some secret tone. On most guitars that left the factory reasonably set up, you can leave them exactly where they are and never think about it again. But on a few — usually single-coil guitars, or anything where one string jumps out louder or quieter than the rest — five minutes with a screwdriver genuinely helps. The trick is knowing which situation you’re in, and doing the more important adjustment (overall pickup height) first.

I’ve had hundreds of used guitars on the bench, and pole pieces are one of the most misunderstood adjustments out there. Players either ignore them entirely or expect them to do something they can’t. Here’s what’s actually going on.

What the pole pieces even are

A pole piece is the little magnet or magnetized screw that sits directly under each string. It’s the part of the pickup that “aims” the magnetic field at the string. On a standard Gibson-style humbucker you’ll see one row of six slotted screws — those are adjustable — and a second coil whose poles are smooth, fixed slugs you can’t turn.

Single-coil pickups are different. On a Fender-style single coil or a Gibson P-90, all six poles are right there in one row — and on a P-90 they’re adjustable screws, so you can set every string individually.

What raising or lowering a pole actually changes

When you raise a pole screw toward a string, you concentrate more of the magnet’s field on that string. The string disturbs a stronger field, so it puts out a bigger signal — that string gets louder. Lower the pole and that string gets quieter and, to my ear, a touch rounder and softer on the attack.

That’s really the whole story: pole adjustment is mostly a volume balance tool, with a small tonal side effect. If your wound strings are drowning out your plain strings, or your B string always sounds weak, this is the fix. A common, useful move is lowering the poles under the plain strings a hair and nudging the wound-string poles up for a little more clarity down low. It’s subtle. Anyone promising you a night-and-day tone change from pole screws is selling something.

The humbucker catch: you can only adjust half of it

Here’s the part people miss. In a standard humbucker, both coils sense the string, but only one coil has adjustable screws. The other coil’s slugs are fixed. So when you turn a pole screw, you’re only changing one of the two things listening to that string — you’re moving roughly half the picture.

This is the honest reason a lot of experienced techs shrug at humbucker pole adjustments. On a covered humbucker especially, the effect is mild, and plenty of people say they can barely hear it. I won’t pretend there’s a settled consensus here — there isn’t. Some players swear by dialing in pole heights on a humbucker; others do a careful A/B and conclude that overall pickup height did ninety percent of the work. In my experience both camps are partly right: pole screws are worth using on a humbucker to fix an obvious string imbalance, but they’re not a tone-shaping playground the way a single coil is.

Where pole pieces really earn their keep: single coils and the stagger problem

On a single coil, every pole is doing the full job for its string, so adjustments matter more. And there’s a specific gotcha worth understanding on older or vintage-style Fender pickups: the staggered pole heights.

Fender’s classic vintage stagger — where the D and especially the G pole stand up taller than the rest — was designed for a different guitar than most of us play today. It dates to the era of the 7.25″ fretboard radius and string sets with a wound G, which had noticeably lower output than the plain strings around it. The tall G pole was there to grab more of that weak wound-G signal and even things out.

Fast forward: almost everyone now runs a plain, unwound G, which is much louder on its own. Park that plain G under a tall vintage-stagger pole and it can bully the rest of the set — the classic “my G and D are too loud” complaint. If a vintage-style Strat crosses my bench with that problem, dropping the G pole (and sometimes the D) a bit is often the whole fix. Modern pickups usually ship with a flatter or “hybrid” stagger precisely to avoid this, which is why newer guitars rarely need it.

How I actually set them on the bench

Order of operations matters more than anything:

1. Set overall pickup height first

Before you touch a single screw, get the whole pickup to a sensible height. This is the big lever — it sets output and how aggressive the pickup feels. Pole tweaks are the fine-tuning you do after this, not instead of it.

2. Then balance string by string

Play through the strings, or watch a tuner or a phone dB meter, and bring any string that’s jumping out or hiding into line. Small moves — a quarter-turn at a time. Let your ears lead; the meter is just a sanity check.

3. Don’t crank a pole (or the pickup) up into the strings

A magnet that sits too close to a string actually fights the string’s vibration. You get warbly, out-of-tune notes and choked sustain — often called “Stratitis” on single coils, but any pickup will do it. If a note under a raised pole starts to sound weird or slightly detuned as it rings out, you’ve gone too far. Back it off.

Give the low strings a little more clearance than the highs as a rule of thumb, check it plugged in, and stop when it sounds even. That’s the job.

When to just leave them alone

Plenty of guitars don’t need it. If your strings already feel balanced, there’s no prize for fiddling. On a covered humbucker you’d have to pull the cover to reach the slug side anyway, and for a mild imbalance that’s not worth it. And if you’re chasing a tone change rather than a balance problem, pole screws are the wrong tool — pickup height, string choice, and the pickup itself will get you a lot further.

FAQ

Will adjusting pole pieces damage my pickup?

No, as long as you turn the screws gently and don’t force a seized one. They’re threaded and made to be adjusted. If a pole screw is stuck, a tiny drop of the right lubricant and patience beats brute force — snapping one off is a real repair.

Should the pole pieces follow the fretboard radius?

Roughly, yes — on a single coil it’s a reasonable starting point to set the poles in a gentle arc that mirrors the neck radius, then fine-tune by ear. But balance beats geometry: if a string is loud or quiet, trust your ears over a perfect curve.

Do pole pieces change tone or just volume?

Mostly volume and string-to-string balance, with a subtle tonal shift — raise a pole and that string reads a bit brighter and hotter, lower it and it softens. If you want a genuinely different voice, that comes from the pickup, its magnet, and its height, not the poles.

The honest bottom line

Pole pieces are a balance tool, not a tone knob. On a single coil — especially an old vintage-stagger one fed a modern plain G — they can fix a real problem in a couple of minutes. On a humbucker, they’re worth reaching for when one string clearly misbehaves, and worth ignoring the rest of the time. Set your pickup height first, make small moves, and don’t chase magic that isn’t there.
