Is a PLEK Job Actually Better Than a Hand Fret Level?

Short version, because I know that's why you clicked: a PLEK job is not automatically better than a hand fret level. It's a fantastic tool, and in the right hands it produces beautifully consistent work. But it is a tool, not a magic box. A great tech with a leveling beam will beat a mediocre PLEK operator every day of the week, and a great PLEK operator will beat a mediocre hand tech. The machine narrows the gap between good and great — it doesn't replace the person reading the results.

I've had hundreds of used guitars across the bench, PLEK'd and hand-dressed, from factory floors and from one-person shops. Here's what actually separates the two, where each one genuinely wins, and what none of it can fix.

What a PLEK actually does

PLEK is a CNC station built for one job: measuring a fretted neck with almost absurd precision and then milling the fret tops to a computed plane. The part that matters, and the part most marketing skips over, is when it takes the measurement.

The machine cradles the guitar and scans it strung up to full tension, logging thousands of data points along every string at roughly a thousandth of a millimeter. Then it does the clever bit: it re-scans the neck with the strings off and mathematically compensates for how the shape changed. A hand tech has always had to estimate that difference between the strung and unstrung neck. The PLEK just measures both and does the arithmetic.

From that data it can mill a deliberate relief contour right into the fret tops rather than a dead-flat plane, and on most setups it will also cut the nut slots to match the string gauge, scale length and neck shape you asked for. Gibson runs the process on its production line for exactly that reason: it delivers repeatable, tight results on a lot of instruments in a row without depending on how tired the person on the bench is that afternoon.

What a good hand fret level actually does

A proper hand fret level chases the same finish line with less automation and more feel. The tech sets the neck dead straight — checked with a notched straightedge so the frets are out of the picture and only the board is being read — then runs a flat leveling beam along the frets until the high spots are knocked down and every fret top sits on one plane. Then each fret gets re-crowned so it comes back to a rounded peak, and the whole lot is polished out.

Because the beam cuts a straight line, the relief on a hand-leveled neck is dialed in afterward with the truss rod. That's not a weakness — guitars have been playing beautifully this way for seventy years — it just puts more of the outcome on the tech's eye, their beam, and their touch. Good hands get results indistinguishable from a machine. Rushed hands leave you chasing buzz.

So which one is actually better?

Here's the honest bench take: for the same level of operator skill, the difference in the finished plane is smaller than the internet wants it to be. Both methods are trying to put every fret top on one clean, playable surface. One arrives there with a straight beam and a truss-rod adjustment; the other machines the relief straight into the frets from a scan of that specific neck.

What actually decides the outcome is the human in both cases. The PLEK doesn't decide how aggressively to reprofile your frets — a person reads the scan and tells it how much material to take. A careless operator will happily mill your frets lower than they needed to go, shortening their life. A thoughtful one removes the absolute minimum and balances a clean plane against how much fret you have left. Same judgment call a good hand tech makes with a beam. The tool changed; the decision didn't.

Where PLEK genuinely wins

Consistency and volume. If you're a factory or a big shop turning out a lot of instruments, the machine gives you a repeatable, documented result that doesn't drift as the day wears on. It's also genuinely excellent at the boring-but-critical nut slot cutting, and the before/after data printout is a nice thing to hand a customer. On a guitar with a tricky neck — a subtle rise past the body joint, an awkward relief profile — the ability to mill a contour into the frets can solve problems that a straight beam has to fight the truss rod to reach.

Where a hand tech genuinely wins

Judgment on a weird, worn, or valuable guitar. A skilled luthier can feel a fret that's lifted a hair, spot a divot the customer didn't mention, and adjust the plan mid-job. Many players also swear a hand setup from a great tech simply feels more dialed-in to how they play — that's subjective, but it's a real and common preference. And a good independent tech is often cheaper: a hand level, crown and polish commonly runs somewhere from around $100 to $300 depending on your market, while a PLEK dress and setup tends to sit closer to $250–$300. Neither is a rip-off; you're paying for the tech's time and skill either way.

The thing neither one can fix

This is the part I most want you to hear. Leveling — by machine or by hand — only addresses the height of frets that are otherwise seated properly. Neither method will fix frets that are loose in their slots, a fretboard that's cupped or has a rising tongue, a nut cut wrong, or a truss rod that's out of adjustment range. A PLEK can't seat a fret that's popping up; a human still has to press and glue those first. If a guitar has real structural fret problems, the honest answer is a refret, and no amount of leveling — automated or not — changes that.

What this means when you're buying used

Don't pay a premium just because a listing says "PLEK'd." It's a good sign that someone cared, but it tells you nothing about how much fret life is left or whether it was done well. Sight down the neck, check the frets for flat, over-milled crowns, and play every note on every string looking for buzz and dead spots. A guitar that plays clean top to bottom has had good fretwork — and frankly, you often can't tell by feel whether that came from a machine or a beam.
