How to Tell If a Used Guitar's Electronics Have Been Replaced

Short version: take the control cavity cover off before you buy. Ninety percent of what you need to know is visible in about fifteen seconds — the solder joints, the wire, and the date codes stamped on the pots. You don't need a multimeter and you don't need to be a tech. You just need to know what factory work looks like so you can spot the stuff that isn't.

And before we go further: replaced electronics are not automatically bad news. I'll get to that. But you should know what you're buying, and you should be paying the right price for it.

Step one: get the back off

On a Les Paul or an SG, that's the plastic plate on the back of the body. On a Strat it's the pickguard. On a semi-hollow like a 335 it's a nightmare through the f-holes, and honestly you're better off asking the seller for photos or doing a mirror-and-flashlight look.

If a seller won't let you look in the cavity, that tells you something all by itself. I've never had a legitimate seller refuse.

Step two: read the solder joints

This is the fastest tell. Factory harness work is done fast, hot, and consistently — the joints tend to sit low and even, and they look the same as each other across all four pots. Bench work by a human being with a hand iron looks different. It's usually taller, lumpier, sometimes dull or grainy where the joint cooled slowly, and it's rarely perfectly consistent from pot to pot.

The other giveaways: scorch marks or brown flux residue on top of the pot casing, mismatched wire colours, wire lengths that don't match the tidy factory routing, and blobs of solder that clearly went on top of an older joint rather than replacing it.

One fair warning, because I don't want you calling out an innocent seller: a good tech's solder work can look better than the factory's. Neat, shiny, low joints don't guarantee originality. Consistency across all the joints, plus the date codes, is what actually builds the case.

Step three: read the pot codes

This is the part most buyers don't know about, and it's the closest thing to hard evidence you'll get without a soldering iron. Potentiometers carry a stamped source code from the EIA — the Electronic Industries Alliance. CTS, who supply an enormous share of the guitar world including Gibson and Fender, carry the code 137. The digits after it give you the year and week the pot was manufactured.

How to use it in practice:

  • Compare the pots to each other. A factory harness will normally have pots dated within a few weeks of one another, because they came off the same reel in the same build. One pot dated three years off the others is a replacement — that's about as close to proof as you get.
  • Compare the pots to the guitar. Pots are made before the guitar is assembled, so a date a few months ahead of the build year is completely normal. A date after the guitar's build year means that pot went in later.
  • Know the limits. The code tells you when the part was made, not when it was installed. Someone can fit new-old-stock pots. And newer CTS pots have dropped the 137 prefix entirely — on those you're looking for a standalone four-digit number, year then week.

One more caveat worth stating plainly: a lot of the pot-code reference tables floating around the forums are crowd-sourced and inconsistent, especially for the last twenty years of production and for non-CTS suppliers. Treat a single odd code as a question to ask, not a conviction.

Step four: look at the parts themselves

Some things are obviously aftermarket once you know the names. Orange Drop capacitors — the orange lozenge-shaped ones — are one of the most common upgrades in the world, and if you see them in a guitar that shipped with small ceramic disc caps, someone has been in there. Same story with Bumblebee-look reissue caps in a modern guitar: those are cosmetic replicas of the striped Sprague caps used in late-'50s Gibsons, not the real vintage article.

Pickups are usually easy. Lift one out, or look at the baseplate and lead wire — aftermarket makers stamp or sticker their name, and a four-conductor lead wire on a guitar that shipped with a braided single-conductor is a dead giveaway.

But here's the modern wrinkle that catches people out: a lot of current Epiphones and Gibsons use quick-connect plug harnesses instead of soldered pickup leads. On those guitars the pickups can be swapped in about ten minutes with no solder evidence whatsoever. Clean, untouched-looking solder does not prove the pickups are original on a quick-connect instrument. Check the pickups directly.

So does any of this actually hurt the value?

Here's my honest take, and it isn't the collector-orthodoxy answer.

On genuinely vintage and collectible instruments, originality is most of the value, and replaced electronics hit hard. That's not controversial. But most used guitars are not that. On a normal production Les Paul, PRS, or Strat from the last twenty-five years, well-executed replaced electronics are close to value-neutral — and if the original parts come in the case, plenty of buyers will actively prefer it, because they've got the upgrade and the option to reverse it.

What genuinely costs money is bad work. Cracked joints, drilled or enlarged pot holes, a routed cavity, a chipped finish edge from a slipped screwdriver, or a rewire that doesn't function correctly. That's not a mod, that's damage, and it should come off the price.

The failure mode I see most often isn't someone overpaying for a modded guitar. It's a buyer who never looked, got home, and found a cold joint that drops the bridge pickup out whenever the guitar gets knocked. Five minutes with the cover off would have caught it.

What I'd actually do at the point of sale

Ask for the cover off. Photograph the cavity with your phone so you can study it later. Ask three questions: has anything been changed, do you still have the original parts, and who did the work. Then wiggle every knob and switch with the guitar plugged in and listen for crackle or dropout. That's the whole inspection, and it takes less time than tuning up.

FAQ

Do replaced pots always mean the pickups were changed too?

No. Pots wear out and go scratchy, and replacing a failed pot is routine maintenance rather than a modification. Plenty of guitars have one replaced pot and completely original pickups. Assess the pickups separately.

Can I date a guitar from the pot codes alone?

You can get close, but treat it as corroborating evidence rather than proof. The code dates the part, not the instrument, and it only works if the pots are original in the first place. Use it alongside the serial number, not instead of it.

Should I ask for the original parts?

Always. It costs nothing to ask, a lot of sellers still have them in a drawer, and it gives you the option to put the guitar back to stock later. If they've been thrown out that's not a dealbreaker, but it's worth knowing before you agree a price.

Is it worth walking away from a modded guitar?

Only if the work is poor, the price assumes originality, or the guitar is old enough that originality is the whole point. A tidy rewire on a modern production guitar, priced accordingly, is often a good buy — someone else paid for the parts and the labour.
