How Much Neck Relief Should a Guitar Have? (And the Fast Way to Check It)
Short answer: not dead flat, and not a banana. A well-set-up electric guitar wants a hair of forward bow — somewhere around .010″ measured at the 8th fret, give or take a couple thousandths. That gap is roughly the thickness of a business card. If that number means nothing to you yet, don’t worry; by the end of this you’ll be able to check your own neck in about a minute and know whether it’s in the ballpark.
I check relief on nearly every guitar that comes across the bench before I touch anything else, because so many “this guitar plays terrible” complaints trace straight back to a neck that’s bowed wrong. Here’s how I think about it.

What neck relief actually is
Your strings pull the neck forward with a surprising amount of tension — a set of 10s on a six-string is well over 100 pounds of pull. The truss rod is a steel bar inside the neck that fights back against that pull. “Relief” is the small amount of forward bow that’s left over when you balance the two: the neck dips very slightly away from the strings in the middle.
Why not just crank the rod until the neck is perfectly straight? Because a vibrating string doesn’t travel in a straight line — it swings in an arc that’s widest around the middle of its length. A touch of relief gives the string room to swing over the middle frets without slapping into them. Too little relief and you get buzz; too much and your action climbs and the guitar fights you. The whole game is finding the smallest amount of relief that stays buzz-free for how you play.
The numbers, by the book
You don’t have to guess — the factories publish their targets. These are measured the same way every time: capo at the 1st fret, hold the low E down at the last fret, and measure the gap between the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the string.
- Fender (electric): about .012″ on a vintage 7.25″ radius neck, .010″ on the common 9.5″–12″ necks, and .008″ on flatter 15″–17″ boards.
- Gibson: roughly .010″–.012″ (0.25–0.30 mm), with .010″ being the common starting point.
Notice how close those are. Whether you’re holding a Les Paul, an SG, or a Stratocaster, “about ten-thousandths at the 8th fret” is a safe home base. Fender is refreshingly honest in its own literature that these are minimum specifications meant to guide you, not hard-and-fast rules — which matches what I see on the bench. The spec gets you 90% of the way there; your hands decide the last 10%.
How to check it in about 60 seconds
You need one cheap tool: a set of automotive feeler gauges (a few dollars at any auto-parts store). Then:
- Tune to pitch. Relief changes with tension, so this only means anything in tune.
- Put a capo on the 1st fret. This takes the nut out of the equation.
- Hold the low E string down at the last fret (a finger is fine; some folks use a second capo). Now the string is a straight line between those two points.
- Look at the 8th fret. There should be a tiny gap between the top of that fret and the bottom of the string. Slide a .010″ feeler in there. It should just kiss the string with a hint of friction.
No feeler gauge on hand? The gap you’re after is about a business card thick. If the string is sitting flat on the 8th fret with no gap at all, you have too little relief (or a back-bow). If you can see daylight and the feeler flops around loose, you’ve got too much.

How much relief do you actually want?
This is where I part ways with treating the spec like gospel. The factory number is a starting point; the right answer depends on your touch and your setup goals.
If you play with a light touch, keep your action low, and mostly play clean or lightly driven, you can usually sneak below spec — .006″–.008″ — and enjoy a fast, flat neck. If you dig in hard, strum acoustically loud, do a lot of big string bends, or drop-tune, you’ll want the string to have more room to move, so a little extra relief (.012″ or even slightly more) keeps things clean. Heavier string gauges pull harder and generally want a touch more relief too. There’s no trophy for the flattest neck — there’s only the setup that lets you play without buzz getting in the way.
One thing I’ll say plainly: relief is a feel and buzz adjustment, not a tone knob. Players sometimes chase relief hoping to change how a guitar sounds. It really doesn’t, beyond the obvious — a buzzing note sounds bad, a clean one sounds good. Set it for playability and stop there.
Which way do you turn the rod?
If you’re off, the fix is a small truss-rod adjustment — and small is the operative word. Looking at the adjustment nut head-on, tightening (clockwise) removes relief and flattens the neck; loosening (counter-clockwise) adds relief. Work in tiny increments — an eighth to a quarter turn at most — then retune, let the neck settle for a few minutes, and re-measure. Necks move slowly, and chasing the number with big turns is how people strip rods and crack fretboards.
If the rod feels gritty, is already maxed out, or the neck won’t budge, stop and let someone look at it. A frozen or bottomed-out truss rod is a real red flag on a used guitar, and it’s worth knowing before you buy.
When relief won’t fix the problem
Relief is the first thing to check, but it isn’t a cure-all. If you set it correctly and still get buzz in only one spot, you’re likely looking at a high or worn fret — that’s a fret-level job, not a rod adjustment. Buzz that’s worse on just one side of the neck can mean a twisted neck. And if the whole guitar plays high even with proper relief and a good fret plane, the culprit is usually a nut cut too tall or a bridge/neck-angle issue. Relief sets the curve of the neck; it can’t compensate for a fret or a nut that’s in the wrong place.

Is it bad if my neck is dead straight?
Not necessarily — some players with a very light touch and higher action run their necks nearly flat with no buzz. But for most people, a straight neck at low action means buzz over the middle frets. Add a hair of relief and it usually cleans up.
How often should I check neck relief?
Whenever the seasons change, when you switch string gauges, or any time the guitar suddenly buzzes or feels different. Wood moves with temperature and humidity, so relief in January isn’t always relief in July.
Can I measure relief without a capo and feeler gauge?
Yes, roughly. Fret the low E at the 1st and last frets at the same time and tap the string over the middle frets — you should hear and feel a faint click, meaning there’s a small gap. No gap at all means too little relief. It’s not precise, but it’ll tell you if you’re in the wrong ballpark.
Does more relief give more sustain or better tone?
No. Relief is a playability and buzz adjustment. Set it for how the guitar feels and plays; it won’t meaningfully change your tone.
