The implication is that the acoustic sound coming off the wood tells you how good the guitar will be once it's plugged into an amp. So does it?
Here's my honest answer after a lot of these instruments across the bench: the unplugged sound tells you something real, but not the thing most people think it's telling them. It's a decent diagnostic tool and a poor tone predictor. Learn the difference and the "acoustic test" actually becomes useful instead of a party trick.
The short version
A magnetic pickup does not hear the sound in the room. It senses the steel string moving through its magnetic field. That's it. The air being pushed around by the body is a separate event that your ears hear and the pickup largely ignores. So the tonal character you hear unplugged — how bright, how warm, how "acoustic-y" it sounds against your body — is not the signal that reaches your amp.
What the body and neck do control is how the string behaves: how long it rings, whether certain notes choke out, whether the whole thing rattles. Those things carry through to the plugged-in sound. So the unplugged strum is worth doing — you're just listening for the right clues.
What the pickup actually "hears"
This is the part that trips people up, so it's worth being precise. A standard magnetic pickup — a humbucker, a P-90, a single-coil — is a coil of wire wrapped around magnets. So the unplugged sound is useless? Not quite.
Here's where the cinder-block comparison breaks down. The body and neck don't add their voice to the pickup directly, but they absolutely shape how the string vibrates — and the string is the one thing the pickup cares about. A stiff, well-coupled neck-and-body lets a string ring long and evenly. A structure that's soaking up energy at certain frequencies produces dead spots: individual notes that die faster than their neighbors. That short sustain is completely audible when you plug in.
You can prove this to yourself. An old bench trick for chasing a dead spot is to clamp a little weight on the headstock; it shifts the note that chokes out up or down the neck. That tells you the deadness is a structural resonance of the whole instrument, not something in the electronics. If a note goes thud acoustically, it'll go thud through the amp too.
So the unplugged strum is a fast, free way to feel out the mechanical health of a guitar. You're not auditioning its tone. You're checking whether the thing rings.
What the unplugged test genuinely tells you

Sustain and dead spots. Play a chromatic run up each string and listen for any note that dies noticeably faster or sounds hollow. One or two mild soft spots are normal on plenty of great guitars; a glaring dead note around the 7th fret of the G string is worth noting. It won't improve when you plug in.
Rattles and buzzes. A loose truss-rod nut, a lifting brace on a semi-hollow, a bad solder joint knocking around in the control cavity, a loose tuner bushing — these announce themselves acoustically as a buzz or a sympathetic rattle. Quiet room, hard strum, ear on the body. Cheap and effective.
Fret and setup problems. Heavy fret buzz, a note that frets out when you bend, a string that chokes past the 12th — you'll hear and feel all of it unplugged. That's fret level and setup territory, and it's information you want before you talk price.
General liveliness. A guitar that feels alive and rings against your body usually has a string doing its job freely. It's not a guarantee of great plugged-in tone, but a dead, damp-feeling instrument is a small yellow flag worth investigating.
What it does not tell you
Now the other side, because this is where money gets wasted. The unplugged sound will not reliably tell you:
Your actual amplified tone. The plugged-in voice is dominated by the pickups, their height and their wiring, the strings, and then everything downstream — amp, speaker, room. A guitar that sounds a bit dull acoustically can be bright and cutting through an amp, and vice versa. Judging EQ character by ear in the shop, unplugged, is guessing.
Output and pickup voicing. Whether a pickup is hot or vintage-output, scooped or midrangey, is not something the wood tells you. That's the pickup's business.
Which of two "similar" guitars is better. Two of the same model off the same rack can feel a little different acoustically. That's real, and it's fine to prefer the one that feels livelier in your hands. Just don't convince yourself the acoustic difference guarantees a matching difference through the amp — measured tests of body resonance versus electric output tend to show a much weaker link than players expect.
How I actually use the unplugged test on the bench
My routine is simple. First strum: unplugged, in a quiet spot, looking for rattles, dead spots, and setup gremlins. That's a structural and mechanical inspection, and the acoustic sound is the perfect free tool for it. Then, and only then, I plug in to judge tone — because tone lives in the pickups and the rig, not in how loud the guitar is against my ribcage.

But the body and neck absolutely govern how the string rings, and that — sustain, dead spots, mechanical noise — does carry through. So strum it unplugged.
