Does Shielding Your Guitar Actually Kill the Hum?
Short answer, and I'll be honest because it's the question I get wrong-answered at me constantly: shielding a guitar will quiet a real, audible layer of noise — but it will not silence the classic single-coil hum. If you shield a Strat expecting it to go dead-quiet like a Les Paul, you're going to be let down, and it won't be the shielding job's fault. Those are two different noises with two different fixes.
I've lined a lot of control cavities with copper foil over the years, and the guitars that come back happiest are the ones whose owners understood exactly what they were buying. So let's split the noise into its two parts, because once you see the difference, the whole thing stops being confusing.
There are two kinds of noise, and shielding only fixes one
Plug a single-coil guitar into a decent amp with some gain and you'll usually hear two things layered together:
1. Electric-field and RF interference. This is the broadband stuff — buzz from a light dimmer, whine off an LED wall or a computer monitor, hiss that gets worse when you turn toward the wall wart, faint radio if you're unlucky. Your guitar's wiring and pot casings act like little antennas and soak it up. This noise is an electric field problem.
2. Magnetic 60-cycle hum. This is the steady, musical-ish drone (60 Hz and its harmonics) that a single coil produces just by existing. A single coil is, electrically, a coil of wire designed to sense a changing magnetic field — and the power running through the walls of every building on earth throws off exactly that kind of field. The pickup can't tell your string's field from the mains field. This noise is a magnetic problem.
Shielding builds a grounded metal box — a Faraday cage — around your electronics. A Faraday cage is excellent at intercepting electric fields and dumping them to ground before they reach your signal. It does essentially nothing to a low-frequency magnetic field, which sails right through thin copper or conductive paint as if it weren't there. That's not a knock on the shielding; it's just physics.

The "touch the strings and it quiets down" test
Here's the trick that tells you which noise you've got. Play, then rest your hand on the strings or the bridge. If a big chunk of the racket drops away the instant you make contact, that portion was electric-field noise — your body was acting as an antenna, and touching a grounded bridge grounded you. Whatever hum is left while you're touching the strings is the magnetic component.
That leftover is the part shielding can't help. But the part that disappeared when you touched the strings? That's precisely the noise a properly grounded shield goes after all the time, whether your hand is on the strings or not. So shielding is basically a way to get that "hand on the bridge" quiet permanently — while still leaving the core single-coil hum untouched.
So is it worth doing?
For most single-coil guitars — Strats, Teles, P-90 machines — yes, I think it's one of the better cheap upgrades you can do, with a couple of honest caveats.
If you play in a noisy room (home studio full of screens, a stage with dimmers and LED walls, fluorescent-lit practice space), shielding meaningfully lowers the buzz-and-hiss floor. It makes the guitar less fidgety about where you stand. It's ten or fifteen dollars in copper tape or a small can of conductive paint, plus an hour of careful work. On a guitar you gig or record, that's an easy call.
But if your complaint is the steady hum on the bridge pickup of your Strat, shielding is the wrong tool. The right tool is a hum-canceling pickup — a humbucker, a stacked single-coil, or a genuine noiseless set — or using your middle-position "notch" tones, which cancel hum because the two coils are reverse-wound. No amount of copper foil changes that.
On humbucker guitars, shielding matters less because the pickups already reject magnetic hum. I still shield them when a cavity is wide open and the guitar's going into a noisy rig, and it absolutely helps when you coil-split a humbucker (splitting turns it into a single coil, noise and all). But it's a smaller win than on a Strat.
Copper tape or conductive paint?
Both work. What matters more than the material is that every piece connects electrically and the whole cage lands on ground at one point.
Copper foil — especially the kind with conductive adhesive, with overlapping seams soldered together — gives the most thorough cage and is easy to solder a ground wire to. Conductive paint is faster for oddly shaped cavities and gets into corners foil won't, but you need a solid coat and a reliable way to tie it to ground (usually a screw or a bit of foil bridging paint to the wiring ground). Aluminum tape is cheap and works, but you can't solder to it, so grounding it neatly is fussier. I reach for copper foil on nice guitars and paint when a cavity is a weird shape.
Two things people get wrong: the shield does nothing unless it's actually grounded, and if you shield the cavity and have a shielded pickguard, tie them together at a single point so you don't create a ground loop that hums on its own. Done right, you shouldn't hear any tone change — the "shielding kills your highs" line is mostly a myth; the added capacitance of a properly grounded cage is negligible in a passive guitar.
The bench-honest bottom line
Shielding is a real fix for a real problem — the electric-field buzz, hiss, and RF garbage that single-coil wiring picks up out of the air. It is not, and never was, a cure for single-coil hum. Sell it to yourself as "lower the noise floor," not "make my Strat silent," and you'll be happy with the result. Expect it to do a humbucker's job and you'll be annoyed at copper tape that never had a chance.

Does shielding hurt my tone?
