What the tone cap actually does
Your guitar's tone control is about the simplest circuit in the whole instrument: a potentiometer and a capacitor wired to ground. Together they form a passive low-pass filter. When the tone knob is wide open, almost nothing gets shunted away. As you roll it down, the pot's resistance drops and the cap starts sending your high frequencies to ground instead of out to the amp. That's the whole trick. The cap is the part that decides which frequencies bleed off and how aggressively.

Capacitance is printed on the cap in microfarads (µF), and it sets where the filter starts rolling off the treble. Two values dominate guitar wiring: .022 µF and .047 µF. The bigger the number, the more treble it dumps and the earlier it starts.
Roughly speaking, a .047 µF cap on a 250k pot puts the filter "knee" down around 300 Hz, while a .022 µF cap moves it up near 850 Hz. In plain terms: the .047 gives you a darker, more dramatic sweep that gets into woman-tone and cocked-wah territory quickly; the .022 keeps more life and clarity as you roll off, so you can dial in a little warmth without going full mud. The exact numbers shift with your pot value, but the direction is always the same. This is the swap that actually changes how your guitar behaves. Here's where the internet goes to war. Two caps of the same value can be built from different materials — polyester or polypropylene film (your typical orange drop), paper-in-oil (PIO), ceramic, silver mica, and so on. The claim is that PIO caps sound "smoother" and "more vintage," that film caps sound "open," and that ceramic caps sound "harsh." Whole cottage industries are built on this.
My honest take, having actually swapped types back-to-back in the same guitar with the same value: the differences are tiny at best, and often below the threshold of what you'd notice in a mix — or even solo. When people run blind tests and match the capacitance and tolerance, the "night and day" difference has a way of evaporating. That doesn't make everyone who prefers a PIO cap a liar. A cheap cap can measure a fair bit off its stated value, and if your "upgrade" happens to land closer to spec, you might genuinely hear a slightly different roll-off. But that's a value and tolerance story wearing a fancy material costume.
Where I'll give the boutique crowd some ground: caps do have real-world differences in tolerance, voltage rating, and physical durability. Orange drops are cheap, tight-tolerance, and basically bulletproof. Old paper-in-oil caps can drift or even leak with age. So if you want consistency, a good film cap is the pragmatic pick. If you want the warm glow of knowing there's a paper-in-oil cap in there, nobody's going to stop you — just know what you're paying for.
The wide-open truth nobody mentions
This is the point that ends most of these arguments on the bench. With your tone knob on 10, the cap is essentially out of the circuit. The pot's full resistance keeps almost all your signal on the main road to the output; only a whisper leaks toward the cap. So if you play, like most of us, with the tone dimed most of the time, swapping a $2 cap for a $30 one changes what you hear at full tone by close to nothing. The cap only earns its keep once you start rolling the knob back. If you never touch your tone control, you could pull the cap out entirely and not miss it — a fun thing to try if you're skeptical.
So should you swap it? My honest take
If your tone sweep is too dark, too abrupt, or just not useful to you, change the value first — going from .047 to .022 (or vice versa) is a genuine, repeatable change and costs a couple of dollars. That's the upgrade I actually recommend. If you're chasing a specific dielectric because a forum told you to, go in clear-eyed: you're buying reliability and peace of mind more than a new tone. And before you spend anything, check that your existing pot and cap are actually working — a scratchy pot or a cold solder joint causes far more "my tone is off" complaints than the wrong brand of capacitor ever will.

Will a paper-in-oil cap make my guitar sound vintage?
Not on its own. A PIO cap of the same value as your stock cap will sound nearly identical, especially with the tone knob up. "Vintage tone" comes far more from the pickups, the pots, the wiring scheme, and your hands than from the cap material.
What tone cap value should I use?
For humbuckers, .022 µF is the safe, versatile default. For single coils, try .047 µF if you want a darker, throatier roll-off, or .022 µF if you want to keep more clarity as you back the knob down. Pick by how you use the tone control, not by brand.
Does a more expensive cap have better tolerance?
